Is it just an ATGM/SSM carrier? Or is it also an ADATS kind of dual-purpose thing?

Let's you LARP a T-80 or T-72 without the gun depression.

That's what I mean, without [the impact on] gun depression.
Also that fuel tank is cancer and that's why it's 2nd worse compared to the one where the TC sits with the gun between his legs like a oversized codpiece.

Guess you could have some sort of accordion-esque baffles under there or something.

Apparently back in 1978 it was designed as a lower-profile, 2-man turret design for the leopard 2, presumably with an autoloader.
It's about 30% lower than the production turret but maintains gun depression with a movable panel in the turret roof that is attached to the gun mantlet (though to me it looks more like the gun is inside some sort of moving box idk.)

yeah you can lose tanks and maintain a platoon sized element.
The soviet 3 tank platoons are nice and lean but you lose a tank and you now have problems, you lose 2 tanks you have to roll the platoon into another platoon.
a 5 tank platoon, with its disadvantages of extra maintenance and crew needs, plus the fact your units get heavier and thiccer and need more logistical support has a few cool advantages.
another problem units may face is peacetime/natural degradation of forces, a 5 tank platoon may be able to absorb losses from non-combat problems like mechanical breakdowns and just roll the crew into a truck or something as a reserve crew. You can lose up to 2 tanks before your problems get serious.
You do need a pretty decent officer corps training system because they need good leadership, as 5 "units" or "elements" tend to be the limit a good unit commander can lead effectively, you can mitigate this by having an assistant platoon leader in another tank, but you still need good leadership to effectively command it.

And yes. The few images I found of the 490A heavily advised the design. Thought it turned out pretty well myself. Also modeled a version that uses a conventional manned turret with bustle autoloader as an export model. Will post when I get home from work.
EDIT: Anemos! Long time no see sir! Good to see you're still around!
