Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

The above post contains hyperbole, metaphoric language, embellishment and exaggeration. It may also include badly translated figures of speech and misused idioms. Analyze accordingly.

That's what I thought it was at first which is why I didn't raise the question, but when zoomed in there didn't seem to be a good delineation between the wheels and the skirt.

I found a blog offering a long list of armored vehicles of the Korean People's Army, most of which have been visually identified. It's not really just limited to armored vehicles, as you will notice.

I've never understood why that country never seems to throw anything away. They are still using scrap like BTR-40 and T-34/76, which were even being dropped from the workers' militia units in Eastern Europe thirty plus years ago?

Because the DPRK is a zombie nation who haven't quite realised they died 30 years ago.

Hyperbole aside, from a logistical and practical standpoint why do they still have this crap?

Because it isn't hyperbole.

It's understatement. The DPRK hasn't advanced since ~1975. This isn't surprising. The DPRK relied on the Soviet Union for support, as the PRC was their enemy for a large portion of the Cold War (Mao considered the DPRK a heretical state after the Korean War), and the Soviet economy essentially stopped in the Brezhnev era. By the mid-70s the USSR had stopped responding to Western arms buildups and re-armaments entirely, so it's not really surprising that the DPRK went from being a top-tier war power to minor nuisance in the span of about 20 years. It's hard to make modernization when your entire military industry, and industry in general, relies on nothing but imports and good faith from benefactors instead of own ability. The Brezhnev Stagnation was the whole reason Juche became a thing, of course.

The situation is similar to the current Western lack of response to Russian and Chinese re-armaments and general economic stagnation throughout the Free World relative to the fast growing economy of the PRC. What will probably happen in about 20-30 years is a few Western economies will implode entirely or be simply bought out by Chinese investors and autocracy will become the in vogue form of government as democracy is today, mostly in response to the failure of democracy to actually do anything to fix the world (and greatly because neoliberal democracies have recently done more harm than good i.e. the Internet and globalization). So the DPRK will probably become "strong" again, but the South Koreans have beaten them at their own game (i.e. Juche) and maintain a fairly powerful and independent military-industrial complex.

Ironically, the most "independent" Korea is a sadae state that relied on the beneficence of the great powers, while the most "international" Korea is an anti-saedae state that takes only what it needs and develops the rest domestically.

At least in terms of war industry. In terms of actual diplomacy and military assistance, it's played more straight. Which is why Camp Humphreys will be a permanent fixture until America decides it doesn't need it anymore.

But that doesn't really matter since the ideal North Korean war is a frozen conflict and their sole means of attack in the future is going to be the ability to atomize the South in a few minutes, while the South only has the ability to roll tanks to the Yalu River in days/hours. Nothing can defeat a nuclear missile except another missile I guess so South Korea will probably invest in a robust ABM system while North Korea might acquire IRBMs with Chinese hyperglides in the mid-far future.

Which would be amazing.

Because military equipment does not just become useless the moment someone comes up with something better. And even when you know something has become useless on the battlefield there are plenty of roles that it is still good for. It's just that from our frame of reference a lot of those roles don't exist.

If you are a rich western country keeping a stock of T-34's really does not make sense. After all, your only use for military vehicles is fighting other militaries. But if you are instead the sort of country has a need for a vehicle to say run over rioters with that T-34 is more than capable of doing it AND it helps you save costs and avoid wear on the good equipment you are keeping in store for the actual war.

It's a jobs program until the nuclear missiles are finished and they can reduce the military from n tank divisions to like 50 guys with AKMs and a shed with a dozen TELs.

North Korea literally doesn't care about their army which is why such old things are kept around. Maybe T-34s still live because they use them for historical parades or something, though.
