I'm not a welder, I'm a machinist/fabricator and our unions keep the machining and cutting/welding very seperate.

That aside, you mentioned carbon [steel] plate, is that what the HMMWV body is made of? Do you know what gauge? I don't need a lesson in welding,/metallurgy, but thank you for the insight. I just want to know what it is made of so I can ask some people at work how they would go about repairing battle damage and adding armor to a HMMWV.

The original up-armored HMMWVs were pretty much double quarter or single half-inch thick scrap-metal bits (likely some sort of medium-carbon steel with a bit of luck), and maybe a few busted-up SAPI plates wedged into them.

Modern kits are bolted-on.

It depends on th kit, but if it's something fielded before 2005 you just tried your luck with a some 6011 and hoped it lasted at least as long as your tour.

The Turkish Leo2s only have first generation armour inserts, so a combination of poor tactics and facing modern(90s) anti-tank weapons makes the result all but certain.

Those Leopard 2s were disabled, abandoned, and then bombed by Turkey. In the full ISIS vid there are no human remains and iirc the majority of Turkish casualties in Al-Bab have been Sabra/AIFV crews.

Information on the layout of early M1 armour has been found.

It was pretty much what we would have expected, lots of NERA.

How protective were original HMMWV add-on armor kits? Random scrap metal probably wouldn't cut it against man-sized bullets, maybe shrapnel.

Which is an ungodly high-carbon steel that (probably) needs heat-treatment post-weld to remain any good.

Plus pre-heat, and a very steady supply of stainless-steel electrodes.
-Even more fun if someone insists you keep the plates attached to the vehicle during welding. Since we're talking about keeping these plates at and above 500 degrees for up to 4 hours.

People welding those sorts of steel under those conditions certainly seem to be earning their pay-grade.

-A quarter inch of solid plate (even mild steel) will probably provide pletny of resistance to a 30-cal at range if even somewhat angled. It's when things get close and your armor is starting to look pretty slab-sided that the second quarter-inch or a solid half inch start being super-useful up until somebody pulls-up with a Dushka.
-Or an RPG, RKG, or even a standard frag-nade if you've got the open-box type armor/turrets that just magicly funnel grenades right into the cabin.

Still, if done properly, AR500 plate would provide a reasonably good protection to wieght ratio. Spaced armor is your friend. It fights for FREEDOM.
-Its an old tech technique

Epic trolling.

"Oh, Chobham? It's this high-tech tank armor we have. Made of high-tech ceramic plates encased in an aluminium honeycomb matrix and sandwiched between steel plates. We can't be too specific though it's highly advanced technology that we can't allow to fall into enemy hands"

Greatest red herring ever.

people heard "high tech classified armor array" and started trawling around for the highest tech experimental armour concepts they could find and just assumed that that must be what Chobham was.

I thought they used DU in the armor.
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

AFAIK that was added during M1A1 production; the diagrams refer to the early M1.
