ZiS-30/2016 go!
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

Tried my hand at making a ridiculously overcomplex cupola fitted with a coincidence rangefinder. Somehow not that satisfied with it - even if it doesn't look all that great, does it at least look workable in practice? (ripped heavily from the oversized cupola on the Conqueror in an effort to give this thing the same rudimentary hunter-killer capability - i.e. 'commander screams instructions to gunner' - as that tank)

Well they did this.

They've also mounted an old 18th-century cannon to the back of a truck too.

What would go great with the cupola is of course a machine gun

No they didn't. They made a steel tube into a basic howitzer and put it on a recoil mechanism.

yep yep, already planning - again, ripping off the Conqueror and slaving an externally mounted MG to controls inside the cupola.

(but drawing an MG cradle is hellishly dull, so I'm putting it off)

E: Done with most of the TD - all that's left is camo, markings, and the MG in question!

How effective do you people think the Char B1 could have been as a tank if it had been given twice the horsepower? I am asking because there are in fact tank engines in the 400-500 HP range that could fit inside it, most notably the stuff used on the BT-7M. So speaking in NS terms the design of a 450hp Char B1 is 1937 NS-plausible.*

* Basically my approach to designing things is that one is allowed to mix and match parts even if they are from different countries but not actually have any individual part that is better than what existed in the period.

No amount of engine power could fix the crew being severely overworked. Not sure what you'd be looking to achieve with more HP.

Not quite sure to be honest. I just have a thing for WW2 French tanks and the B1 is sort of a really, really cute one. Well that and the G1.

This said they are all cute. Maybe it's the fact they painted playing card symbols on the side of them or that they have loads of armor and great guns for the period. But I just like French tanks.

Very much worth a read. The tl;dr is that the Char B1 was plagued with problems - on the automotive front, the tank was sorely underpowered. A 400-450hp engined Char B1 would've required a redesign of the transmission, a doubly necessary replacement of the suspension (already overworked with the B1 Bis and Ter upgrades) - and even then, it wouldn't really have made the tank noticeably nippy per se, but would rather have given it a slightly more acceptable modicum of mobility. The up-engining of the B1 Bis already required a ridiculous assortment of hull modifications, the further up-engining of the B1 Ter was never really tested but would probably have had similar implications - and that was only up to 350!

The Char B40 requirement and AMX's 'Tracteur B' (mentioned in the piece) would probably be of some significant interest to you, what with their taking the Char B concept to its potental conclusions. B40 (working off the program requirements and the work done before the Battle of France ended) would have brought the tank up to around 40t with vastly updated protection, installed an accordingly more powerful engine, and incorporated a 105mm in the hull.

Image
(AMX's Tracteur B)

Image
(an artist's idealised conception of what a 'best case' Char B40 might have looked like)

At the end of the day, though, what we do know about the work that was done by a whole variety of companies on Char B1 upgrades and replacements don't really paint all that rosy a picture. A lot of the items in dire need of improvement (the awful one man turret being the obvious one) were passed over, some aspects of the vehicle were difficult to salvage (the B1's power and drivetrains in particular were a bit crap), and the concept itself was somewhat confused (as the gulf between the Tracteur B and the B40 requirement show, there was some confusion as to whether this thing had to be lighter or heavier).

It's not a great tank or a great concept by any stretch of the imagination, but if you're interested in playing with it, there's a decent amount of material out there on B1 upgrades and successors. Once I'm done with my late 40s tank series, I might hop back a bit and start working on some interbellum designs!

OH DEAR GOD IT WOULD BE LIKE DRIVING AN OVEN.

The cooling system was not designed for that. And the hull made upgrades to the cooling system almost impossible.
