At least your attempt at a Centurion didn't involve a 17 cm PaK and Schachtellaufwerk.

Sending light force to Syria after what happens to the Turks are foolish. Better send an Armored Division.

(Cage-AMAP-ERA combo again, this time the cage is located outside, then ERA, AMAP and finally the tank armor itself)

The cage and ERA does the same job, and by AMAP you mean?

Why are you so fixated on combining cage armour and ERA?

There is no synergy between them. Anything the cage can stop, the ERA can also stop. And better.

He's just mashing three different appliques together.

AMAP is the non-energetic applique in this instance.

Should I use m48s?

I want a reliable tank with lots of stowed kills, not a garage queen primadonna like the Abrahams.

A new tank would not likely need AMAP, which is primarily designed to be an add-on kit to older vehicles to bring them up to modern standards. A new tank would almost certainly have such protection as part of its basic armor arrangement, since there's nothing particularly special about AMAP aside from the fact that the Germans have been very successful in marketing it. An add-on kit implies the base armor is not sufficient, which would be an awkward problem for a new tank.

ERA and cage armor would not be used for the same areas. Cage armor is used over areas that are either not worth covering with ERA or which cannot be covered with it for one reason or another, such as the rear of a tank, where solid blocks of ERA would block the engine intakes/exhaust and the drive sprocket (causing mud issues). These areas are also less important than the fighting compartment so it is a better area to use lighter cage armor to save weight.

A new tank could probably do without cage armor anyway though because it'd probably have a fancy APS to help keep pesky RPGs at bay anyway and would have a higher basic level of protection. Tanks are heavy enough that they can often use better alternatives, like ERA or solid composite blocks, which perform better against a wider variety of targets than cage armor which is really only effective against HEAT warheads.

Cage-ERA combo, then. Cage for engine area, ERA for the rest. Standard even for new tanks.

Spoke to a guy who knows a lot about the development of the M6 heavy tank. Got onto the M6A1's single bow mounted M1919 that the driver controls. I always thought that it was fixed in place, just like other hull machine guns that came before, and that all the driver did was press a trigger. But nope, according to the manual, it does indeed elevate and depress. Now it says with the elevation and depression that is can also traverse, but I don't think it can, and he never mentioned it being able to. There just doesn't seem to be any controls or room in the hole in the armour for that. To elevate and depress it, the driver has a handle on the gun's cross bar thing and buttons on the sticks for firing. I previously thought the M6 was full of dumb ideas, but now I know it was full of really dumb ideas. Note that the M6 had two of those guns before one was deleted in the M6A1 :V

I love the M6

So, I was looking up the AMX 50, and stumbled across the late "50-120", with Tourelle D (Turret D).

And my god, is this thing a complete beauty.
It's enough to make me sad oscillating turrets are dumb, because, especially from behind, this thing looks thicc.
Image
Could I get away with an "oscillating" gun-pod type turret? Tourelle D is too beautiful to die back with Derek Bentley.

This is neat. Also, where did you go?
