Specialized docks, same with any large cargo that can't be put in through the side door or too bulky to be move forward after being put in the side doors. The wing float things are still on small water channels, but the fuselage is supported over a dry dock ready for loading. Like how the B-29 was loaded with the atom bomb, just much bigger.

That's why I suggested the tanks being on separate platforms or cradles inside the plane, so that they're suspended rather than being directly on the floor, so that the belly doors can be right below them.

I would have expected RO/RO.

The main cargo through those doors would be big ass bombs, so the dry dock method seemed more reasonable and efficient to me.

the British had the same idea but as usual did it better

they were called Cookies and they were literally just a massive drum full of explosive

funnily enough they stopped using them when their normal targets stopped being entire cities

Postby The Soodean Imperium » Thu Feb 02, 2017 3:19 pm

Thinking back to an earlier discussion about firing poorts recently led me to throw together a prototype "future IFV" using remote roof MGs.

The BSCh-12 (Bundae Susong Janggabcha-12) is an infantry fighting vehicle currently under development for the Soodean Army, destined to enter service sometime around 2025. Compared to other "future" combat vehicle concepts, it is fairly modest in most regards, but does implement a number of novel concepts. First among these is a remote turret with the OCTA-40 autocannon. This is the same armament carried by the "Ch" variant of the BSCh-9, but here it comes in a new zero-penetration turret form: all ammunition is stowed on the right side (see cutaway drawing) with the optics and other equipment on the right. The gunner and commander sit side-by-side next to the driver in a compartment behind the 1500-hp multifuel engine. This compartment is partitioned off by a thin steel wall with a hatch at the center, allowing the dismounts to exit the vehicle in CBRN gear without compromising the crew's CBRN protection.

Conventional armor is even thicker than on the full-applique BSCh-9, with large composite slabs attached to the front and sides. The hull is expected to have frontal-arc protection against 40mm APFSDS, and possibly against 105mm APFSDS, with side protection against 30mm APFSDS and light anti-tank weapons (RHAe < 400mm). The floor armor is thicker than on the BSCh-9 and has a slight V slope, offering better protection against mines and IEDs. Weighing in at a little over 50 tonnes, comparable to the SuChŏng-6 MBT, it is properly called a Heavy IFV.

The removal of the turret basket, along with the lengthened hull, allows the vehicle to carry a full 10 dismount squad. This is a major advantage over the BSCh-5 and BSCh-9, which could only carry six dedicated dismounts, one member of the platoon HQ, and the sergeant/commander. Even the latter position is reduced on the BSCh-12: because the dismount squad includes its own sergeant, the vehicle commander can remain under armor during the attack. The Class 5 TO&E integrates the new vehicles directly under the command of the Company Captain, as opposed to making them organizationally part of each squad.

In order to allow thick armor over the sides, the BSCh-12 is not expected to have firing ports, which were present on the BSCh-5 but eliminated on the BSCh-9. To compensate for this loss in capability, it is expected to carry four 7.62mm GPMGs in remote turrets operated by members of the dismount section. Aimed by means of a camera, these are claimed to offer greater range and accuracy than standard firing ports, and they can be reloaded from under the vehicle's armor. Two possible arrangements were suggested in early prototypes: Sije-Chalyang 216, with the four MG turrets in a square block over the passenger compartment, and Sije-Chalyang 217, which moves the main turret further back and mounts two of the MG turrets further forward. (From what I can tell, 217 has a better field of fire and room for a larger remote turret, but it also has a distinct "interwar loltank" look, and I'm not sure whether this is cool or awful for a ~2020s vehicle).

Thoughts? Obviously this is all very preliminary and I suspect I have no idea what I'm doing.
