Valersian Elections 2017

Postby Valersey » Mon Dec 26, 2016 3:55 pm

Every four years, Valersians head out and vote for their parliamentary representatives and the president. Politically, the nation has never been more divided, with minor parties such as the Revival Party and the Freedom Party rising rapidly, while the People's Party and Democratic Party continue to lose support. Francesco Ludovico hopes to get re-elected, but polls show him losing against every right-wing or centrist candidate. With party primaries over, the first round is looking like this.

Democratic Party - Francesco Ludovico

The Democratic Party, rallied behind President Francesco Ludovico, is a left of center social democratic party. The party is the successor of the Republican and Progressive parties, the former being the largest party in the north pre-unification and one of the two main parties in the United Republic, and the latter being a major powerhouse in early post-unification. Ludovico has long been at the helm of social democratic policymaking, encouraging first president Lena Guererrio to legalise same-sex marriage in the 1990s, and he himself later pushing anti-discrimination and pro-equality laws in his presidency. Ludovico has came under fire for his economic policy however, as he has tried to repeal bills that have attracted large foreign companies to Valersey.

People's Party

The People's Party, this year choosing Bernard di Vitis as their candidate, is a centre-right, liberal conservative (and commonly viewed as the right-wing establishment) party. They are the successors to the National Democratic Party and the Christian People's Party, the former was the rival party in the United Republic, and the latter being a key force in both Free Republic and early post-unification politics. di Vitis and many other establishment figures have moderated their social policies a lot, taking the party towards the center, resulting in a huge blow to their conservative support base. They lost six key stronghold constituencies in the south that they had never lost before as a result, and they are projected to take another huge hit.

Socialist Party

The Socialist Party has chosen Nasario Sabino as it's presidential candidate this year, proclaiming a radical left-wing socialist platform, supporting abortion and heavy regulations on the government. Nasario however is undergoing fraud investigations and two high ranking officials of the party were arrested for rape and murder earlier this year. Projections put the Socialist Party to lose several key list seats and not to make it through the first round of the presidential election.

Liberal Party

The Liberal Party is Valersey's main centrist party. In a heated primary, they chose ex-Vice President Isabella Crasekov by just three thousand votes to represent the party. Despite being historically one of the largest parties in Valersey, they only held the presidency in the Democratic Republic twice, the Free Republic once and post-unification once. They've recently experienced a growth in support, their membership now growing by 8.5% p/a, despite a series of disappointing performances in the last 12 years. Their motto of "Unite, Don't Take Sides" has resounded with a lot of moderates and they're expected to do very well.

Freedom Party

The Freedom Party, this year represented by Davide Generinno, is a libertarian nationalist and right-wing populist party that's been experiencing a growth of support with the anti-establishment wave. The party has came under heavy criticism for it's anti-immigration, traditionalist policies, but is still expected to make a sound impact, Davide Generinno currently leading polls against every candidate if he makes it to the second round. His main support base is in the center of the nation, with a lot of opposition from establishment leftists and right wingers alike.

Revival Party

The Revival Party, for the first time rallying behind a presidential candidate is a new party, gaining two seats in the last election. Founded as a merger of the Reform Movement, the National Party and the Populist Party. The party is the second main anti-establishment populist party along with the Freedom Party, and is it's main rival for the position in the second round. Their socially moderate policies combined with their economic nationalism have won them a lot of support in the last 6 years, and they're hoping for a successful campaign.

United Verizonian President Frank Goldriver has endorsed Davide Generinno of the Freedom Party. In a statement, he said:

"Our nation of United Verizonia will always support a candidate who will stand up for the people, for libertarianism and conservatism, and capitalism, at home, and abroad. This is why I am officially endorsing Davide Generinno of Valersey, who has shaken up the establishment of his own nation, and who I am sure is an extraordinary leader."

Valersian expatriates in Ventalia have endorsed the Democratic Party by a narrow margin, slightly beating the centrist Liberal Party. They cite the party's socially liberal platform as very appealing but are slightly wary of the party's economic planks.

VBN Breaking News Update

"It's like nothing we have seen before. The Democratic Party has won just 29% of the vote, and there has been less than a 1000 vote margin between the Freedom Party and the Revival Party, who sit at 23% each. In the Parliament, there are some seats still being counted, but the Democratic Party have lost a lot of seats, as have the Liberal Party and the Socialist Party. Based off of projections on the last 15 seats, the parliament is split, and there will be NO majority government. Current projections put the Revival Party at a massive, plus 56 seat gain, and the Freedom Party at a huge gain of 23 as well. Presidential election results have knocked out all other parties contesting, the People's Party up at 14%, the Socialist Party at 7%, and the Liberal Party at 4%. The Constitution states that a candidate must win at least 50% +1000 votes to win the presidency, with results like this I can't say that I'm expecting an outright winner in the second round, I think it will go to a third round."

"Yes Maria, it's been a big shock to us all but right now we take you to Casamento, where Francesco Ludovico and now, the ex-Prime Minister, Antonio Berugli, are speaking..."

"Ladies, Gentleman and others who do not identify within the gender binary, Valersey has spoken... The Democratic Party, has suffered it's largest, and most unexpected, electoral defeat since unification. Two radical, extremist parties - the Revival Party, and the Freedom Party - have taken many seats in the Parliament... Antonio, you have done a great job as Prime Minister, but I believe it's over for you now. As the constitution states, I give Marco Inadaci, the ability to form government. You have two weeks to begin talks with other parties, to secure at least 30 other MPs, to vote for you, or someone else in your party, as Prime Minister. Thank you all for standing by me these last four years, now I pray you stand with me in the second round, and we can at least try to secure the Presidency..."

"Powerful words from the president, uh... the ex-Prime Minister, Antonio Berugli, has just issued a statement via Amici.vlr, officially conceding defeat to the People's Party. I believe that concludes it all then..."

VBN Election News Update: Three days later, the Valersian Elections Commission have released the final results of the elections, and confirmed the new parliament. The Revival Party, and the Freedom Party, have completely shocked the political scene, resisted the establishment and have split the parliament. We don't see a government being formed with them controlling this many seats. Ex-pats and postal votes are now open for the last three candidates.

VBN Breaking News

Results of the second round have came in, and Ignacio Aito, has narrowly missed out on a majority of the votes and pushing a third round of voting. Incumbent president Francesco Ludovico is expected to lose in a landslide come February 23rd, many analysts polling him at around just 35%. Davide Gennerino has issued his concession to Ignacio Aito, but has refused to concede to Ludovico. Gennerino lost his position in Parliament as he chose to run for president, but is believed to be at the front of the Freedom Party by-election list - the most likely candidates to either resign or die in office are in Freedom Party hotspots. We cut now to the live feed at the Freedom Party HQ in Casamento.

"People of Valersey. Today I accept my defeat, at the hands of a great man, Ignacio Aito. However, I refuse to accept defeat to Francesco Ludovico. I call on my supporters, for we must rally together, to defeat the establishment, and support the next prseident, Ignacio Aito. Ludovico and the corrupt, anti-Valersian establishment must be destroyed, and ground into dust. I will seek the presidency in four years time, believe me comrades. But today, my campaign is over. It was one of greatness, we polled higher than any other non-establishment candidate in history, and in the first round we did very, very well. Comrades, we must build from this. In 2021, President Gennerino will be a thing, I assure you. God Bless Valersey."
