Final Poll shows tight race for President & hung Parliament

Postby Avinaa » Thu Oct 17, 2019 8:23 pm

Politics Daily: The final poll released ahead of Monday's presidential and parliamentary elections show a tight three-way race for president between the NDP's Laura Nyborg, Conservative Ariel Sigmund, and Social Democratic nominee Mary Ward. The full results give Nyborg 37% support followed by Sigmund at 31% and Ward at 29% with Christian Unionist candidate Adam Harris at 3%. For Parliament voters intent to give the NDP 178 seats to the Conservative's 146 with the Social Democrats taking 62 seats, the Greens on 42 (they did not run a presidential candidate), and the CSU at 22 seats.

Also worth noting, in Valencia the separatist Valencian National Party (VNP) continues to slip in the polls after reaching record highs just a few weeks ago. The state will be holding legislative elections alongside federal elections on Monday. Current projections give the VNP 31% with the NDP winning 29.6%, the Conservatives 16.9%, the SDP 13.6%, Greens 6.6%, and the CSU 2.3%. The State Legislature has 100 seats under a proportional system. If these results hold pundits predict it could be hard to form a government since a left-wing unionist government would be short by one seat (an NDP-SDP-GRN coalition would have 50 seats) and the NDP, SDP, and Conservatives don't seem too eager to form a broad left-right unionist government. Every party (except the Greens) have publicly stated that they will not support a government that is led by, supported by, or includes the VNP.

The morning editions of the newspapers in Annaterra seem to revolve predominantly around the ongoing diplomatic standoff with Hindustan.

The typically pro-government The Times of Regina is running the following headline, which references the Foreign Secretary's warnings issued to the Hindustani Government:
URUQHART DRAWS HIS LINE IN THE SAND

Meanwhile, the usually anti-government, left leaning Annaterran Observer is running the contrary headline:
GOVERNMENT RATTLES THE SABRE AGAIN, DOMESTIC ISSUES SIDELINED FOR FOREIGN GRANDSTANDING

Church of Annaterra-aligned newspaper, Bishop's Beacon, runs the related headline:
GOVERNMENT CALLS FOR COMPASSION, ARCHBISHOP OF REGINA URGES COMPASSION FOR REFUGEES

Furthermore, on the second and third pages, numerous headlines circulate on various topics:
  • DISESTABLISHMENT BILL DEFEATED AT SECOND READING, CHURCH PROTECTED FROM SOCIALIST ATTACK
  • QUESTIONS ARISE OVER INTERIOR SECRETARIAT USE OF POLICE SPECIAL DETACHMENTS
  • CAMPAIGNERS CALL FOR OVERTURN OF PROSCRIPTION OF COMMUNIST PARTY, JUSTICE SECRETARY REFUSES
  • ATTORNEY GENERAL ISSUES LEGAL ADVICE UPHOLDING ANNATERRAN CONTINUED RECOGNITION OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA
  • SHOOTINGS IN ANNATERRA'S SECOND CITY CONTINUE, CITIZENS OF CABOTSBOROUGH LIVE IN FEAR
The Republic of Annaterra - Former British dominion, turned independent republic. Staunchly anti-communist, mostly democratic.

Avinaa to elect woman President

Postby Avinaa » Sun Oct 27, 2019 9:06 pm

National Daily: Either former prime minister Laura Nyborg or Opermia State Governor Ariel Sigmund will be Avinaa's first woman president having been the only candidates to make it to the second round presidential election in November. In the first round Nyborg took 39% to Sigmund's 35% with Rome Mayor Mary Ward taking 24% with far-right Senator Adam Harris taking 2%. In the concurrent parliamentary elections Nyborg's New Democratic Party (NDP) also took first place winning 205 seats, or 40.5% of the national party list vote, the National Conservatives under Sigmund took 155 seats and 28.5%, Ward's Social Democrats secured 55 seats and 16.5%, and Harris' Christian Unionist party did not clear the 3% threshold to win seats nor did they will any FPTP seats. The Greens meanwhile took 35 seats and 14.5% of the party vote, a massive improvement from the 2015 election. 226 seats are needed for a majority. Realistically the NDP are the only party capable of forming a government at this point, unless the NCP can somehow win the presidency to force a cohabitation between the NDP and NCP. If Nyborg can win in November she could push to form a three party coalition between the NDP, SDP, and the Greens or a minority NDP administration.

A slew of fresh second round polls show Nyborg at about 53% and Sigmund at 39% with 8% of voters undecided.

NDP forms minorty gov in Valencia

Postby Avinaa » Sun Oct 27, 2019 9:57 pm

Valencian Times: Voters in the Avinaain state of Valencia went back to the polls yesterday after the first elections in October gave no workable coalition in the State Parliament a majority. In October the left-leaning separatist Valencian National Alliance (VNA) came first with 34% of the vote. The leading unionist party, the New Democrats won 33%, the Conservatives won 17%, the incumbent Social Democrats won 11%, and the Greens took 5%. All seats are awarded on a directly proportional way in the 100 seat legislature.

The incumbent SDP minority government resigned and the Governor charged NDP leader Nicholas McNeil to form a government. With a left wing unionist government between the NDP, SDP, and Greens only commanding 49 seats McNeil attempted to form a broad left-right unionist government by including the Conservatives. However before the Conservatives could even reject the offer the Greens and SDP refused to form or support a government that included the Conservatives denying a majority to the only other feasible coalition.

The new election results did not make it easier to form a government. The VNA again won the most votes winning 32%, the New Democrats took 31%, the Conservatives 22%, the Social Democrats won 9%, and the Greens won 7%. Once again the left-wing unionists were short in parliament winning only a combined 47 seats. However this time the Conservatives and NDP had the seats (53/100) to form a government, but with a new leader the Conservatives announced they would not sit in a unity government. Faced with the prospect of a third general election McNeil announced he would put forward an NDP minority government what would work on a case-by-case basis with the other parties this government is likely to win its first confidence vote later today with the NDP, SDP, and VNA voting for and the Greens against. The Conservative whip has ordered an abstention.

The Sovereign faces hostility in West Subhurbia

Postby Subhurbia » Mon Oct 28, 2019 1:03 am

The Sovereign had decided to take a visit to a few regions in the country and West Subhurbia was one of them. The issue is, West Suhurbians have always had an issue with the Federation's current sovereign and generally don't support him. When Sovereign Adom attempted to cross the border from Central Subhurbia to West Subhurbia, the Terranian guards asked him for his pass. The Sovereign knew that the Sovereign of the Federation doesn't need a pass to go from one division to the next. So he responded that he thought he didn't need a pass. With the help of his bodyguards, Sovereign Adom was able to cross the border without a pass, but when the local Terranian inhabitants saw him, they would avoid him. "They responded as if the devil had entered their land when we entered a small, Old World town called Voy." One of the Sovereign's bodyguards said. "West Subhurbia isn't really fond of foreigners, even if it's just people native to a different region. We'd go by the shop to buy food and the seller seemed to treat us with indifference. Yet she would be a lot warmer and hospitable to the local inhabitants." Another bodyguard says. Sovereign Adom knew the challenges he would face. "The only local Terranians who have ever been good to me was Gallicles and Cosconia, the king and queen themselves. Not even some of the other government officials of West Subhurbia liked me." Says Sovereign Adom. When Sovereign Adom became leader, he was highly approved in South Subhurbia, and East Subhurbia, but didn't get much approval from North Subhurbia and West Subhurbia, especially West Subhurbia. A survey has shown that only 14% of the West Subhurbian population approves Sovereign Adom as the new leader. On the other hand, 85% of South Subhurbians, 77% of East Subhurbians, 63% of Central Subhurbians, and 32% of North Subhurbians approved of Sovereign Adom. "Sovereign Adom promotes ideologies that goes against most aspects of Terranian culture." West Subhurbian government official Galvarius Secktum says. "We don't identify with him. We don't even mention him in the same boat with our king and queen."
Not to be mistaken for Suburbia.

NDP's Pat Holman elected House Speaker

Postby Avinaa » Thu Nov 07, 2019 1:58 pm

Capitol Post: MPs elected veteran New Democratic MP Patrick Holman as the lower chamber's speaker. In what was widely considered the first major test of the NDP's strength in the House after a strong election performance still left them 21 seats short of a majority. Holman has served in the House since 2003 and served as the deputy caucus leader of the NDP from 2007-2011among other high profile roles on the the budget, health, and transportation committees. In the vote the NDP was supported by Green Party MPs and opposed by the Conservatives. The Social Democrats voted "present" and did not field a candidate for speaker.

The speaker's office is an influencial position having a great deal of say in the legislative process.

Nyborg wins, becoming first woman president

Postby Avinaa » Thu Nov 21, 2019 3:10 pm

National Post:

In a relatively tight vote voters elected Senator Laura Nyborg as president making her the first woman elected to the role. Previously Nyborg served as prime minister from 2006-2011 leading the last NDP minority government. She returned to federal politics with her election to the Federal Senate in 2016.

Conservative nominee Ariel Sigmund has called Nyborg congratulating her, and all women, on her victory. President Justin Capriles of the Social Democrats has promised a smooth transition of power in December.

Official results show Nyborg winning 54.8% to Sigmunds 45.2%.

Nyborg to select Yang to form government

Postby Avinaa » Thu Nov 21, 2019 3:28 pm

Politics Daily: Sources close to President-elect Laura Nyborg have confirmed that the President-elect will task NDP parliamentary leader Charles Yang to form an NDP minority government. Yang has served as the NDP's leader in Parliament since the collapse of the Grand Coalition between the Conservatives, Social Dems, and the NDP that saw long-time NDP leader James Davis removed from power. Yang has guided the party further to the left leading the parliamentary party to win 205 seats, just 21 short of a majority, in the October 2019 elections. He has served as an MP from East Anglia since 2011 serving in the cabinet in two separate occasions first from 2012-2015 as the education minister in the SDP-NDP coalition government and as the housing and urban development minister in the Grand Coalition from 2017-2018.

Space Studies Institute Sends Underwater Drone to Enceladus

The Space Studies Institute has sent a rocket to Enceladus. When the rocket lands, a robot will bore a hole through the ice and an underwater probe will enter the deep underwater ocean of Enceladus to check for life and organic compounds. We hope to determine if there is life in our solar system other than earth.

Bill to ban smoking in Hanvaria met by extreme backlash

The Smoking Suspension Bill has been a controversial topic for the last few months, but it has finally made it to the Chief Officer's desk. Protests in Halvshon are being quelled, and the Chief Officer is planning to approve the bill and turn it into a law. If the law comes to pass, hundreds of thousands of people would be out of jobs, due to the large tobacco industry in Hanvaria.

Several Hanvarian citizens have been interviewed on the matter, and most are against the idea of a smoking ban. We are still developing the story on this ban. Stay tuned for more articles. We have prioritized this story for our papers.

Liberal Party Candidate Sam Flynn has bribed people into voting for him. President Zhang is going to run again!
Just when you thought the 2020 election couldn't get any more unpredictable, centrist candidate Sam Flynn has committed fraud so he could win the election. After this happened the government has decided to hold another election. President Alex Zhang, being disgusted by Flynn's actions, has decided to run again for the Freedom Party! The nation was so relieved that Zhang is coming back that Freedom Party candidate, Kara Gardener has stepped down so Alex Zhang could replace her. Almost everyone seems to agree that Zhang is going to win because of the incredible job he has done as president.

Refusal to side with only the right or only the left may be unpopular, but I'm not willing to blindly support something solely because a political party says I should. Adam Guibernau Acquitted.

Current Center-right oposition leader, bussinessman and war hero. Has been acquitted of war crimes. The Batea war crimes research comission led but the high court Judge Francesc Enrich acquitted of any responsability for the Coripa Massacre to Adam Guibernau, then commanding officer the Combat Group Guibernau around the 14th Infantry battalion.

Enrich Comission concluded "He had indirect responsability for ignoring the risk of bloodshed and revenge against ethnic ucenans" and "not taking enough measures to prevent bloodshed, as the units under his command were heavily engaged at the moment". Guibernau's negligence in protecting the civilian population of South Batea, which had come under allied control, amounted to a non-fulfillment of a duty with which the Major was charged, and He was unable to full-fill as He had insuficient resources. It was recommended that Guibernau be acquitted of any prossecution for direct criminal responsability dismissed.

Coripa Massacre and Burning was done by batean militians against Ucenan paramilitary, PoWs and ethnic Ucenans as reprissal for previous attrocities commited by ucenan forces. Elies Otger has been considered guilty of ordering the execution of 95 Ucenan POWs, paramilitaries, paramilitary police and colaborationists and indirect responsible of the death of 460 civilians in the fire of the town and the forced removal of 3500 other ethnic ucenans.
