Each adult is required to work every week on a split-shift in every type of industry that exists in his voting district as "maintaining personal competence". This comprises half his/her weekly workload, whereas the other half is devoted to his/her vocation. Due to the intracacies of modern production, standards for the vocational workers are naturally higher than the "shifties", and obviously, in some professions, the standards will naturally favor traits more common in males, females, or adults (over children or the elderly). To combat this, technology is consciously and continuously developed to lessen the gap in productive ability between these types.

Are women or men given equal education opportunities? Yes. The theoretical knowledge of many subjects is often taught alongside labor in production facilities that apply such knowledge. Since education for children is compulsory, children of both genders are exposed to both the theoretical and practical knowledge for most types of jobs in the Republic.

Couples who divorce or whose children commit felonies while in their care permanently lose their right to vote, except in the case of divorce due to crimes against the state. The only way to clear one's record is to gain an Octagon Medal, given after a 10 year enlistment in the Eighth Legion for a "great service" (i.e. effectively advance Furon's interests abroad, often in an illegal way).
