Burial tradition in YN

Postby Uinted Communist of Africa » Thu Dec 08, 2016 6:22 pm

In the Uinted Communist of Africa our tradition is to bury the dead in the community cemetery. The dead is carried from a nearby church with a parade of people that knew the deceased. But unlike western nations our culture isn't necessarily sad during this we tend to celebrate the life of the deceased. The parade of people are usually wearing bright colors and are respectfully trying to make light of the situation. Once they reach the cemetery they lower the body casket into the ground. There aren't any last words said by a priest or any of that its just a moment of silence. Then each of the group members attending the burial (we stole this from another culture) puts one shovel full of dirt on the casket.

Fun fact: Uinted Communist of Africa's body caskets are biodegradable so they decompose with the bodies. Every 100 years a cemetery is turn into farm lands to take advantage of the nutrients of the deceased. Its like the deceased are still contributing to the community.

Nice idea for a thread. ;)

We build statues around the corpses of our dead usually giving them upright poses, usually they are made of marble, but sometimes they are made of metals such as copper or bronze. The statues of the corpses tend to end up in family mausoleums. Just imagine the statues from classical antiquity.

We have a somewhat complex burial tradition in our nation.

Following death, one's body is cremated. Following the cremation, the deceased closest living relatives use special metal chopsticks to pick the bones out of the ashes and place them in an urn, taking care to place bones from their feet in first and going up until the bones from their head are placed in last. Once the bones are placed in the urn, the ashes of the deceased are then placed, with care being taken to make sure the ashes cover as much of the bone as they can. Tradition dictates that the ashes become their new skin and muscles in the afterlife.

The urn is then taken home and placed on an empty shelf, traditionally located in the living room, called the 'shelf of the deceased' where it remains for at least one week but no greater than two weeks. This is so the deceased's spirit can see their home one final time and come to terms with their death. The reason why you should not leave the urn greater than two weeks is due to a belief that if the deceased remains for more than two weeks, they will become attached to the house and their spirit won't be able to leave.

Following this, the urn is then buried in a family grave where all other immediate family members shall be buried once they pass away.

Once someone is dead, any usable organs are automatically donated to our public health systems to save the lives of others. When applicable, anything that can be donated to scientific research is. Whatever else is almost always cremated, since our nation is densely populated and large amounts of space are used up by tombstones and thousands of individuals graves, and it's really not necessary for disposal of inanimate matter.

Muslims in the country practice the authorized Islamic burial system of washing the corpse, enshrouding them, and bury them facing Mecca.

Tengrists do much the same thing, exept sometimes burying the dead with their favorite posessions. Sky Burials are practiced by some Tengrists in Rural areas.

In the early days of the Vault, bodies were cremated and the ashes either kept in an urn, buried, or deposited into the wasteland via an outgoing pipe. However, now bodies are "recycled" and used to supplement plants in the hydroponics lab.

After the organs necessary for the saving of lives are respectfully and ceremoniously removed from cadavers (Surgeons wear robes, fancy headdresses, light candles, grand old time), the deceased are frozen to await shipment to space where they will be launched into orbit around a far-away star. There they will wait until our glorious Empire rises again from the ashes to conquer not only this world, nor the system, but the entire galaxy (maniacal laugh, maniacal laugh!).

We have a funeral, then cremate the body. After cremation, families keep a portion of the ashes, then the rest is transported to Gamindustri Graveyard via an ossuary terminal, a service for that purpose.

Most deceased Sidhae are rather unceremoniously recycled by incineration in a plasma furnace that vaporizes their bodies into their basic atomic constituents, which are then accordingly used to power the furnace itself or collected and used in various industries, much the same as any other organic waste.

Someone of note, such as soldiers fallen on battlefield, may be incinerated and their constituent carbon then used to produce a synthetic diamond to be entombed in the Halls of Eternal Glory in the famed Aedun Necropolis, or handed over for safekeeping to a designated friend or associate. Soldiers often adorn their armor with diamonds made of their fallen comrades, so that they can witness the glory of battle even in death.

Civilians for most part cannot hope for anything as elaborate, and therefore must contend themselves with being disposed of with little more reverence than common waste. Sidhae regard ordinary interrment and cremation as horribly wasteful and inefficient practices, occupying a useful plot of land or consuming a large amount of fuel for no practical gain, and hence themselves prefer to have their bodies recycled to raw materials that may be put to some use, thus serving their society even after death. While the practice of making diamonds from the carbonized remains of some dead may be regarded as comparably wasteful, it is seen as a token of respect, the deceased individual having contributed enough to society to deserve a little waste in his honour.

Those who die in space are either likewise recycled in a shipboard plasma furnace, or jettisoned in space if one is unavailable, preferably towards a star or planet, where their bodies will burn up harmlessly and not become dangerous space debris contaminating areas of space traffic.

In Hyggemata, the dead are customarily cremated on a funeral pyre constructed with certain types of wood.

Executed prisoners are treated differently. If a prisoner is executed for a normal crime, such as murder, the body is treated like a normal one; the next of kin may take the body for cremation, and in the absence whereof, the state pays for the funeral. If the prisoner was executed for treason, then there would be several piece of his body, which are left hanging on trees on the eastern border of the state. Historically, most invasions came from this direction, and the bodies of captured prisoners and defeated enemy leaders are mutilated and displayed in like manner to terrorize any further invaders. Remains of traitors are treated in lieu of enemies of the people, which they are.

We don't bury people. We use them in scientific research. When someone dies, their body is confiscated by the government and handed to the Ministry of Progress, where members of the Scientific Research Bureau (the two organisations are separate but their functions overlap) decide what kind of research the body will be used for. The family have no say in the matter, and this is justified by the idea that the research produced using their loved one's body and those of other dead people will be used to enhance their lives immeasurably. The Empire of Japan under the Benign Retrofuturist party is already far ahead in terms of quality of life and technological and scientific advancement compared to the rest of the world, so we think overlooking some aspects of traditional morality for the greater good of our society is a logical system to have in place.

in the nation, the process takes a long time for it.
the first stage is when the body is put into a cyrostasis cell unit, which will be picked up by the floating fortress when it comes back to the mainland for repairs, before being sent back to the capital
the second stage is when scientist there will attempt to save the dead through the power of science, if they are saved, they will be sent back in the cyrostasis cell, otherwise we send them back with the cyrostasis cell in a casket, before being put in a science facility, where we wait for the day where science has come far enough to save them

In the new nation of Thethethethethe, we have retained the tradition of burying the deceased at sea. Since we are an island nation which has grown to almost double its original population since we grew from an undiscovered tribe to an emerging nation, where fishing is our main source of industry, it made sense for the indigenous people to give back to the sea which they took from. When I became leader of this nation, I continued the tradition since it is much more practical and economical than burying people in the ground.

The most common thing we do is cremation. We just burn them and put them into a pot for their families' keeping.

We also commonly use dead bodies in scientific experimentation.

TurtleShroom almost universally buries its dead, but all executed criminals are cremated. Sentient turtles and humans are traditionally buried six feet under. Mushrooms are buried six feet under in decomposable wood boxes. Mushroom tradition believes that the decomposers should themselves be decomposted.

In the Christian religion in TS, CROBOTS (Church of the Russian Old Believer Orthodoxy Of TurtleShroom) rejects cremation as part of its doctrine, and the Catholic denomination in TurtleShroom, while not officially condemning cremation, always buries its members. The Baptist denomination is neutral on it.

For most humans, a funeral is not sorrowful, but a celebration of the deceased's life, because most TurtleShroomers believe that they will see them again in the afterlife. For turtles and mushrooms, who are believed not to have souls or an afterlife, it is, unfortunately, a time of mourning.

Organ donation, while not compulsary by law, is culturally expected and it is considered sinful not to share vital organs.

In Great Nortend, there are two legally permitted ways of the deposition of men after death. The first method, is the burial of the body at least five feet under ground in a casket or coffin in a churchyard or public graveyard. The second is the burning of the body and the storage of ashes in urns at least three feet under ground in a prison graveyard. The second is only permitted for women who have been hanged and burnt instead of being hanged and quartered.

The vast majority choose burial in one of the many crypts or catacombs. Radical atheists and Bolshevik revolutionaries have historically chosen and advocated cremation, seeing the body and any implication of a soul or resurrection as a delusion needing to be stamped out, but even the most secular of Alkovs tend to choose entombment, finding great comfort in knowing where loved ones are buried and a sense of awe and peace in being among the bones of ancestors.
