No form of national service over here since that's a statist action, but there's a lot of voluntary private security companies that sell protection subscriptions.

Issue of Dispute: National Service of the Eternal Empire

The Ministry of Imperial National and Religious History has compiled a detailed and accurate response to the questionnaire put forward regarding military conscription, also known as national service, within the Eternal Empire.

  • Is there compulsory military service (hereinafter known as National Service) in YN?Yes. Compulsory national service has been a part of Ephyral and Imperial history for countless centuries.

  • Do both men and women have to do National Service?By law yes. Women serve for less time however, and if they prove physically incapable of the demands of active service they are relocated to other departments such as communication, medical and others.

  • ]When are people drafted in for National Service?[Males and females start national service at the age of fourteen.

  • Do all people have to do National Service?Exceptions are academics, those whose careers or educations paths are vital for the continuity of the empire in a non-military aspect. However, less-important fields are simply given reduced times. Inhabitants of the Africanus are conscripted into paramilitary forces, usually a Provincial Auxiliary. Iberians also are conscripted into Provincial Auxiliary forces. Honorary Ephyral and Ephyral are drafted into the main armed forces.

  • For how long must someone do National Service?A male must complete five years service, from the age of fourteen onward to nineteen. A male on a low-priority academic course serves for only two years. A female must complete two years service, but all academic females can have their entire service absolved.

  • Can those conscripted become officers? If they opt to stay on with the military, yes they can.

  • What is the impact of National Service on society?Thusfar it has been entirely positive. The warrior is held in great esteem in Ephyra. An individual who fights and is willing to die to protect the empire, the Imperial people and beliefs is worthy of great praise and worship. For a family to boast an individual who died in combat, or fought valiantly, and especially one who received a knighthood is a great addition to their history indeed.

Is there compulsory military service (hereinafter known as National Service) in YN?
No. There is also no standing army in Freeland. Instead, national defence is organised into borough militias often nicknamed 'minutemen' because they can supposedly be readied with a minute's notice.

The founders of Freeland were wary of a standing army becoming a tool of oppression by a government and so chose instead to have wholly voluntarily militias. This effectively makes the entire adult population into military reserves.

Is there compulsory military service (hereinafter known as National Service) in YN? Yes.
If not, disregard the below.
Do both men and women have to do National Service? Currently it is only males who need to perform national service, but females may be called upon by an amendment to existing statutes.
When are people draughted in for National Service? Age 18 or the end of their deferral.
Do all people have to do National Service? In principle, it is negative service, meaning that all are required to perform it unless exempt.
For how long must someone do National Service? 2 years to 3 years.
Can those conscripted become officers? No, unless they have the necessary qualifications.
Give the timeline of a random person's National Service experience:
The spring after reaching age 16 -- notification of service
The spring after reaching age 18 -- drafted and checked for fitness; submissions of branch and place of service.
The spring after reaching age 20 -- placed on military reserve
The spring after reaching age 45 -- discharged
What is the impact of National Service on society? National service is regarded as something of a chore for most, and the state does exempt individuals from it for a variety of reasons; however, successful completion of national service is deemed a feather in one's cap when it comes to employment and reserve status does entitle one to certain minor benefits. A person with a disability or some form of unfitness for normal military service may be diverted to an alternate form of service. Those totally unable to serve are exempted; causes include severe disabilities or stringent family circumstances. Those pursuing higher education after age 18 have their service commencement deferred. Successful completion of a bachelor's degree entitles one to a 1/2 remission of national service; a master's degree, to a 2/3 remission of service. A doctorate stands in the stead of a whole term of national service, as one's research work is deemed sufficient service to the nation; in this case, persons with doctorates are permitted to enjoy all the benefits of a reservist as though they had actually undergone the term of service.

Generally speaking, draftees are not typically deployed to combat positions; these are mostly reserved for professional soldiers. Around 2% of all service personnel apply to become professional soldiers after their terms of service. After being initially drafted, the draftee is allowed to choose his branch and location of service; if he has any qualifications, those are also taken into account. The draftee is allowed to present as many choices as he may please, since his first choice may not be granted to him. As of 2015, the most desirable position is a cashier in the Unified Logistics Service, since it's a position of trust and (covertly) authority. The cashier is responsible for handing out the salaries of service personnel.

by Imperium Sidhicum
Is there compulsory military service (hereinafter known as National Service) in YN?
Yes, in a way. While true military service is a pre-requisite for full citizenship with political rights, it is also strictly voluntary. Every citizen is, however, required to register with the Auxilia, the Imperium's paramilitary reserve and civil defense force, and attend periodic training sessions.
Do both men and women have to do National Service? Every Sidh is required to serve in the Auxilia, so yes, that means both men and women.
When are people draughted in for National Service? Usually shortly after they are activated and socialized. Their joining the Auxilia typically takes place around the same time as their first job assignment.
Do all people have to do National Service? Yes. Every single Sidh is liable to conscription in times of war, either as a soldier or a worker in a strategic industry.
For how long must someone do National Service? Service in the Auxilia is lifelong and periodic, meaning that citizens will have to attend classes and military exercises on a regular basis, usually around a month every year spread out evenly through the year. Military veterans are not exempt from this, also returning to Auxilia ranks and attending periodic exercises to retain their skills, many in the capacity of instructors and officers. Voluntary service in the regular army or navy is at least 3 years long to make one eligible for full citizenship, but can be extended indefinitely in times of need.
Can those conscripted become officers? Yes, those Auxiliamen who show promise as officers are offered a place in a reserve officer training program.
Give the timeline of a random person's National Service experience: Initially, an Auxilia recruit will be put through a month of basic training, at the end of which he will take the oath to defend the Imperium and be assigned to his permanent unit. Afterwards his service will go on along with his civilian job. On weekdays, the recruit will do what he normally does for a living, changing in uniform on every other weekend and attending various exercises to retain his skills.
What is the impact of National Service on society? The result is that every single member of Sidh society has at least basic military skills, granting the Imperium virtually unlimited manpower reserves in times of war, and ensuring that those who opt for a professional military career can immediately move on to more advanced training, saving time and cost of training new recruits. Since the focus of Auxilia training is civil defense, it also ensures every Sidh knows what to do in times of war or emergency, making mass panic an unlikely thing to occur.

Is there compulsory military service (hereinafter known as National Service) in YN?

No, both Starfleet and the Colonial Peacekeepers are purely voluntary organisations. The former tends to be the more popular, but therefore more competitive, of the two branches due to its additional scientific mandate, a mandate which the Colonial Peacekeepers is lacking. In the event of a war where the survival of the Federation was at stake, however, there is a clause in the constitution that allows for a national draft to be instituted - this has never been invoked.

Is there compulsory military service (hereinafter known as National Service) in YN? Yes, although it is somewhat limited.

Do both men and women have to do National Service? Mares and stallions are both eligible for the draft.
When are people draughted in for National Service? After secondary school. In order to receive their diploma, they must present themselves to the local police station and register for service at a nearby barracks. Upon completing their service, they are given the diploma. Depending on the start date, the age is usually from 16-19 years of age, and drafting those 15 and under is illegal.
Do all people have to do National Service? No. Zebras are fully exempt, as are various smaller minorities. The Changelings are expected to provide a steady stream of secret agents for the intelligence services in lieu of the military draft. The Griffons provide one mountaineer brigade, while the Unicorns provide two companies of engineers. Earth Ponies are subject to much more lenient restrictions, and only about a fifth are ever called up for service. Pegasus ponies are all immediately drafted into the armed forces, and form the backbone of the military establishment. Conscientious objection for religious or moral reasons can get one deferred from going into combat roles. Not meeting the physical standards is grounds for a deferment as an "honorary member" of the Gendarmerie (basically a voluntary Neighborhood Watch).
For how long must someone do National Service? Depends on the race. Griffons serve 5 years and Unicorns 6, as they are relatively sparse and need to fulfill large quotas relative to the population. Earth Ponies serve 12 months. Pegasus have the longest service requirement, a total of 9 years before they are formally released. Changeling agents are required to do a minimum of 2 years' training in intelligence.
Can those conscripted become officers? Mostly not. NCO positions are generally available to all conscript ranks, although accepting a promotion to NCO makes your chances of leaving the service fall drastically. Griffon and Unicorn serviceponies are fully expected to become officers, and are indeed the main officer class. As pegasi are the backbone of the nation's defense, they are likewise permitted to hold commissioned officer positions as conscripts.
Give the timeline of a random person's National Service experience:
June 1st, 2003- Prancing Light, Earth Pony, Age 17, Female, graduates from Secondary School.
June 6th, 2003- Citizen Light goes to the local Gendarmerie station and registers for the draft, including a physical and mental examination.
June 15th, 2003- Citizen Light receives a notice of draft, and is ordered to report to Ferdisville Barracks VII.
July 1st, 2003- Private Light, taking the train, reports to Barracks VII. She is given her rank, uniform, rifle, and kit.
July 8th, 2003- Private Light begins basic training.
November 1st, 2003- Private Light completes basic training with no citations against her record.
November 2nd, 2003- Private Light is given one week of leave following the successful completion of basic training.
November 9th, 2003- Private Light returns following her week of leave.
January 8th, 2004- Private Light is deployed to a local Gendarmerie station to serve police duty.
May 29th, 2004- Private Light is called back to Barracks VII.
June 1st, 2004- Citizen-Private Light is released from military service. She consigns her rifle and kit and turns in her field uniform, but keeps her rank insignia and dress uniform.
What is the impact of National Service on society? The draft period defines pegasi life, and is considered analogous to adolescence. Griffon and unicorn societies have also become significantly more militaristic, as often 1 in every 20 ponies are under arms. The draft has less of an effect on the earth ponies. It tends to delay college education greatly, so some don't receive bachelors degrees until they are into their 30s. In addition, the compulsory draft has made foreign military fiction unpopular, particular overdramatized, pro-war material. Despite opposition, it has been kept in place since the nation's independence in 2000, and is considered "the best tool for the enforcement of the national conscience".
