20 years is the legal definition of a life sentence. Any sentence over this adjudication (e.g., multiple life sentences can merit the death penalty.with no time served). However, if awarded a life sentence (20 year sentence), it implies that one is a ward of the state for that time period and not necessarily incarcerated throughout that time.

The perpetrator is expected after a short prison time (for punishment (1-5 years depending on behaviour) and assessment) to then work off his sentence in the open market (outside of incarceration) so as to financially pay back his victims His family, friends, religious order and community are expected to support and rehabilitate.
