Dr. John Elliott Wesley (DPS) joined former Progressive Party in 1987 as a campaign manager and poll analyst. In 1993 he was appointed to be the MP (Canvish Parliament's House of Commons has a Proportional Representative so the MPs are appointed by the political party instead of being elected directly). In 1999 he replaced the late-Senator Erik Walsh-Gunnarson and became Senator. He was a protégé of Senator Jon Peige from 1987 to 2002. After Senator Peige was murdered by a foreign nationalist in 2002, Wesley became the head figure of NPP Progressives.

In late 2006, the failed Invasion of the Republic of Tarinistan and the result have sunk the ship of former PM Alfred Hayden (NPP-Conservative Caucus). On June 11th 2007, Hayden resigned as Prime Minister and caused a temporary vacancy of Prime Minister Position. In later days the NPP grew more divided while continuously blocking the SDP attempt to overthrow the NPP government. In August, then-Senator John Wesley have secured the majority of party and was appointed to be the new party leadership. The NPP formed an alliance with Conservatives to defend its position and the coalition earned 269 House seats (a solid majority requires 225+1 seats in the House) in the election on September 19th, and Wesley was elected as Prime Minister on September 26th.
