I found a weird straight-pull bolt-action, but can't find much info on it. I think it's a "Burton-Bethel".

DESCRIPTION: One of the kind English double magazine bolt action repeating experimental rifle designed by Bethel Burton. Between 1882 and 1886 a number of Bethel Burton experimental rifles were submitted to the English War Office for evaluation and testing. None of these rifles was accepted by the English military. This specimen features a rather unusual straight pull bolt action, with a bolt handle located under the receiver (!). The bolt handle travels back and forth between the two parts trigger guard. The trigger is located on the right side of the receiver assembly. Both sides of the receiver have magazines ports hidden behind the sliding gates. The magazines (not included) were fitted to the both sides of the receiver.

Why not side mounted pans?
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

Working out basic training:

TT basic training is ten weeks long, and focuses on developing teamwork, discipline, skills, and leadership. Officer aspirants and basic recruits are trained in the same training platoons. Aspiring officer candidates are rotated through leadership positions of increasing difficulty. Basic recruits are introduced to small-unit billets in the second half of the training cycle. Upon graduation recruits receive the rank of Soldier Third Class (OR-1), while officer candidates are given the rank Leading Soldier (OR-4). Upon graduation of officer candidates' school they are commissioned as a Lower Officer (OF-1).

The weekly breakdown:
Week 1: Arrival at one of three training depots (North, South, West) on Sunday evening. Administrative processing, medical check-up, gear issue, initial physical and aptitude tests. Training begins on Friday morning. Introduction to physical fitness, military discipline, and close-order drill.

Week 2: Introduction to service weapon and maintenance. Introduction to combatives. Academic instruction in basic military subjects. Officer candidates begin evaluation in small-unit (squad + below) leadership billets.
Week 3: Intro to military obstacle courses, bayonet techniques. Continuing combatives instruction and pugil sticks. Classes on basic military history. Intro and qualification on first aid.
Week 4: Intro to small-unit maneuver and the hike program. Initial 14-hour field exercise, fireteam/bayonet assault course, 5km march. Initial inspection, written test, leadership evaluations.

Week 5: Intermediate fitness test. Aspirants begin platoon-level leadership billets. Intro to firing techniques. Hike program continues with foot movements to and from the range.
Week 6: Marksmanship and rifle qualification on 500m range. Working parties are detached to evaluate small-unit leadership. Intermediate written test.
Week 7: Hand grenade qualification. Introduction to land navigation, movement at night. Overnight field exercise: combat shooting, land navigation, 10km march. Intermediate inspection and leadership evaluations.

Week 8: Aspirants begin company-level leadership billets, recruits begin small-unit billets. Final written tests. Qualifications on gas mask, basic combatives.
Week 9: Final fitness test. Final field exercise: intro to platoon CSWs. Live-fire day and night assault courses, with the day course serving as a leadership evaluation of aspirants. 15km march. 24-hour liberty on base.
Week 10: Out-processing. Final inspection and leadership evaluations. Classes on life after basic training. Graduation parade on day 70.

After graduation soldiers are given one week of leave before reporting to specialist training. Officer candidates are given 96 hours' liberty before reporting to officer candidates' school.

That was my first thought, but then I realized you probably wouldn't be able to reach the bolt handle. Or the trigger.

Taihei Tengoku wrote:TT basic training is

Royal Army Basic Military Training is 8 weeks long, divided into two 4-week sections. Basic training is attended by all personnel, both officer and enlisted, and is followed either by advanced individual training or officer school, which varies depending on the rank and job specialty. After that, they are either discharged as a reservist and expected to fulfill the 'two weekends a month, two weeks a year' requirement for field exercises and training; or continue into the active duty military where they are assigned to a unit on a full-time basis.

Week 0: In-processing. Arrival at Royal Army Training Center (RATC) Kvarlov, RATC Karlskrona, or RATC Hammarsborg. Officer Aspirants will attend RATC Karlskrona exclusively. During this week, conscripts and aspirants are assigned to training platoons, are issued equipment and uniforms, have blood tests performed, undergo dental and eye exams, take an initial physical aptitude test, take a psychological evaluation, etc. Glasses, uniforms, IDs are issued. Trainees are introduced to close-order drill, military mores (salutes, etc.), and military terminology (ranks, etc.). Fitness training begins at the end of Week 0, typically on a Sunday.

First Phase: Theoretical; During this phase, much training is performed indoors and in a classroom or gymnasium setting.

Week 1: Begins the Sunday following Week 0. Trainees are introduced to the concepts of cleanliness and barracks upkeep. Topics of instruction include sweeping, mopping, laundry, ironing, sewing, and close order drill. Political indoctrination begins. Introduction to the international laws of war.
Week 2: Trainees are introduced to military martial arts, and practice their knowledge in gymnasium using hand-to-hand and armed techniques. Trainees practice throws, grapples, and using pugil sticks. Introduction and qualification in battlefield first aid; trainees learn CPR, how to use an NPA, and how to apply the Asherman chest seal. Trainees practice land navigation, map reading, and complete the compass course at the end of the week.
Week 3: Trainees enter the gas chamber. Trainees are introduced to the Rifle, .223 Caliber, m/58 and its method of operation using an over-sized model. Trainees are issued their rifles and responsible for them for the remainder of training. Trainees begin practicing with dummy (rubber) rifles and bayonets in military martial arts on dummies. Trainees are introduced to shooting techniques using air rifles and an indoor marksmanship simulator, using iron sights. Pugil sticks give way to rubber rifles in practicing specific martial arts techniques on dummies, but are still used in individual combat practice.
Week 4: Trainees are introduced to the fundamentals of small unit tactics in a classroom setting. Topics covered include perimeter security, small unit maneuver, and noise/light discipline, among other things. Trainees are introduced to the art of fieldcraft and self-camouflage. Trainees practice use of the entrenching tool outdoors. Obstacle course is administered at the end of the week.

Second Phase: Practical; During this phase, training moves outdoors and trainees begin more "militarized" training.

Week 5: Training rapidly picks up pace during this week. Trainees are introduced to firing techniques with the automatic rifle, at individual, team, and section levels. Trainees practice dry-firing these techniques at all three levels. Trainees culminate their theoretical instruction with the first practical test: the bayonet assault course, at the end of the week. The BAC combines elements of the obstacle course with the military martial arts program, as well as serving as a milestone confidence course for trainees.
Week 6: Trainees begin practicing on the rifle range. Trainees learn to shoot from standing, standing supported, crouching, crouching supported, and prone firing positions at targets from 10 to 300 meters distant. Trainees will qualify on the rifle range by the middle of the week, and must score 24/40 hits to pass. Trainees use the 3x20 optical sight to qualify. A score equal or greater than 34/40 qualifies for Sharpshooter badge. Hand grenade training. Forced march, basic load (~60 lbs) with dummy rifles and ammunition, 7 miles. Week 6 culminates in a first field exercise (24 hours) where trainees apply their existing knowledge of land navigation, fieldcraft, emission discipline, and small unit maneuver.
Week 7: Remedial/reinforcement training based on results of the Week 6 field exercise. Trainees will cover knowledge gaps and are divided into groups among each other where soldiers proficient in one knowledge area teach deficient trainees. Instructors supervise each remedial/reinforcement group. Physical fitness is laxer during this week, allowing trainees more time to focus on team-building and study time.
Week 8: Week begins with administration of the Army Physical Fitness Test, which is graded on a sliding scale. Soldiers must score a grade of at least "Fair" to pass. Trainees receive basic familiarization training on Royal Army weapons, such as the LAW, light machine gun, and 40mm grenade launcher. Second field exercise (48 hours) at the end of the week, comprising several forced marches in combat gear, over rough terrain, at night. Trainees will conduct a mock assault on a defended position, defend against a counter-attack, and practice land navigation, noise and light discipline, small unit maneuver, fieldcraft, and entrenchment skills learned over the course of basic training.

Final Week: Out-processing. Final inspection and cleaning of barracks. Soldiers practice for parade. Parade is held on final day of week (Saturday).

If a tank is moving forward, does it make sense to have infantry hide directly behind the tank and keep pace with it for cover during an advance? Or are there better alternatives?

This is assuming IFVs aren't available, maybe the section/squad's IFV got blown up by an artillery shell.

3 days is pretty fast, but I figure since Galla is training to a worse standard they'll just get used to being outshot

This reminds me I forgot to mention the combat shooting tables. I guess this could be rolled into the second FEX in Week 7.

I stand by what I said though. The only reason the G3 isn't my army's service rifle is mainly just because the full size battle rifle is just generally not de rigueur any more.

I could probably allow 20/40 as a passing grade since the bulk of guys going through basic training are going to be rear area people like supply clerks and truck drivers. Galla's basic training is supposed to be something of a sausage machine that produces lots of minimally competent troops who are basically fit enough to pass their real training when they go to whatever job school, anyway.

I'm not sure how practical it would be to introduce ballistic theory and require much stricter shooting requirements for Mechanized Infantry, though. Either stricter shooting, or shooting using optical devices instead of iron sights, perhaps.

US qualifies on optics now. If you don't trust recruits with combat optics they can be held at the range for shoots.
