Very, very popular. Most of our own animation would be mistaken as anime, were it not for the fact Versilian is the language being spoken.

Our union with Japan has only increased it's popularity.

In the 2010s, anime aired across the country for the first time. It turned our people into the so called "Otaku"

Nowadays, anime is used for different purposes, such as entertainment, military recruitment, propaganda, and many others.

Anime is looked down upon because it is seen as Pro-Japanese propaganda, which we have chilly relations with the Japanese.

Anime streams on few television networks, they had to be approved by the government.

We look down on anime and consider it verboten entertainment as unrealistic cartoons made by the un-impressive and decadent Japanese warmongers. A niche fandom seems to have sprung up here but is looked down and condemned by the wider population because they fetishize and admire fictional characters that do not exist and has unrealistic appearances.

The Shyubi government, one, because it hates the Japanese, second, because it wants to protect its native entertainment and popular culture industry, and finally, because its population genuinely dislikes anime has made successful attempts to restrict and ban Japanese cultural goods namely: Anime, manga, video games, immoral pornography (hentai, eroge), visual novels, light novels, physical merchandise, anime idol, Vocaloid and J-POP music, et cetera.

On second thought, we realized that our flag looks like anime, and we ourselves, look like it, so maybe the Japanese are trying to draw us maybe to mock us or something for propaganda purposes. In fact, they deceived us because we thought the characters were Shyubi, but it's the cunning Japanese after all.

ERASED, Madoka Magica) and action shounen anime (ex. Attack on Titan, Naruto, Bleach, Tokyo Ghoul, Seraph of the End) are liked and tolerated. Heck, even Steven Universe is considered as anime in Mikanjima as well!

Everything else (especially "moe" anime, "yuri" anime, "harem" anime, "ecchi" fanservice anime, hentai, lolicon, nekomimi, "monster girls") is and will always be extremely hated and unpopular. Even watching hentai/lolicon will land you into jail.

In general, while it is okay to be a casual anime fan in Mikanjima who respects female, POC, and trans/queer/asexual/pansexual/bisexual anime fans, being a sexist, misogynistic, racist, smelly, disgusting "weeaboo" or an "otaku" isn't. And it is extremely frowned upon. Even so, anime only has a small amount of popularity in Mikanjima and is considered the same as Western cartoons.

More convincing evidence for the destruction of Mikanjima and the freeing of their oppressed peoples...

In the COTHEOTSM, anime enjoys basically the same popularity it has in the modern-day U.S.

Speaking multiple languages is considered a sign of class, and as such, Artoonians love importing popular culture. English/American media are far and away the most popular, followed by French and then Japanese. (Estimates are they spend about 17 billion spesmiloj annually on Japanese media imports, compared with about 103 billion spesmiloj on English-language imports.)

UPDATED:

For the government, just another form of media that we don't care about. Let it in.

For most citizens, however, anime is perceived in a negative light, because most anime imported to Devernia is basically (and kinda literally) fanservice in video form. You see, here in Devernia, censorship based on the 'saucy' stuff is completely non-existent, so lax and non-existent that works imported to the country tend to become more uncensored. This was the method used by some indie studios in Arktica (Japan/Greenland), the homeland of anime, which were trying to find an easy way to make more money to fund themselves. Arktica has some television laws in place that bans 'flirtatious content' to be shown on TV. Once a studio named Dewaii-Kasu Arts moved its whole operations to Devernia after learning of its 'censorship laws' and was able to make 'Marshmallow Hell-Land,' other studios suit to follow.

The characters are one-dimensional, and there's not really an actual plot that gets resolved. Ironically, Devernia has the largest asexual population percentage in the world (not more than half of it, but just enough to have an effect on this), so teenagers aren't the answer. It doesn't seem like the networks would stop any time soon, though (except for the DBS channels, which are considered the most 'sane' of the networks by the citizens), which is why Devernians hate television and resort to Tenflix nowadays.

Most Devernians instead watch your typical animated cartoons (like IRL Steven Universe.)

Merriwhethrans are quite fond of anime. Of televised entertainment consumed by children most is anime produced domestically or abroad particular to their demographic. Of entertainment outside television it constitutes a plurality but not a majority. Many young adults are partial to it having grown up in the early days of anime. Older adults generally consume it less but still to a statistically significant extent.
