Narland is in a balkanized counterfactual historical continuum wherein resides over a thousand countries. Of those only the Toshogi Shoganate, Hokkaido Republic, Aquatine Principate, Union of Maharashtra, The Oglethorpe Combine, the Rancho Niponesa of the Lima Syndicate produce Anime proper. Commonwealth animation that mirrors Anime is called Narnime and generally categorized as 'cartoons."

The State of the Commonwealth (of Narland) has no opinion on Anime. The People of the Commonwealth however seem to appreciate the 0.03% of the cream that floats to the top. There is a modest following for those. An informal award system similar to the Hugos called the Newtype Awards is annually televised.

Narlandren categorize genres of Anime to meet Commonwealth societal expectations and generally ignore the Japanese categories. Slice of Life has been the most popular for the last decade, the more philosophically poignant the better. Niche genres with a solid fanbase include Romantic (not necessarily romance) Fantasy, Space Opera, and Epic Adventure. Favorite tropes are Slice of Life Situational Comedy, Reluctant Monster Hunter, Touched (with great power comes great responsibility), Neo-Cyberpunk, and Mecha.

Anime geared for children are lumped together with cartoons and not taken seriously. The gratuitous excesses of fan service, gore, tentacles and improprietous social commentary are generally rejected. Those obsessed with the worst of it are considered "disturbed."
