If you aren't using nuclear-powered bombers with nuclear powered missiles then you are doing it wrong.

So far the possibilities I had in mind are:

MiG-17
MiG-15
L-39
L-29
T-11 Iskra
Yak-18
Yak-18P
Yak-18PS
Yak-50
Yak-52
Yak-15

Obviously, a full blown warlord team would be awesome, but also really expensive, so I am contemplating maybe something a step down from that, L-39s are still used by my Air Force so I was going to rule those out... not sure if I should go prop or jet plane, since prop planes can pull tighter turns than jets that could make for a more interesting display. Thoughts?

A pro team using soviet/Russian stuff would likely be using something like the yak-54 or su-26/29/31 ie pure acrobatic sports aircraft.

A civilian jet team is very rare even in the West due to the sheer costs and complexity involved.

You might want to have a look at groups like The Blades to see what is possible with a bunch of aircraft in a similar class to those mentioned previously.

Thanks for the tip off, I'll definitely check out the Yak-54. I took a look at The Blades and like what I saw, especially the bit about records for formation looping. The original USSR team of the 1930s, "Red Five" did that in their routine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3N_iarw6R0

so I wanted that to be our signature move. I might go with earlier Yak variants, simply because I have a weakness for old stuff, being an historian. Would an An-12 be OK as a support craft for the team? Or would that not really be necessary for a team of civilians\paramilitary\DOSAAF?

An AN-12 would be common for a former Soviet state. Although I'd be surprised if it wasn't an IL-76 Ilyushin.

Does it have NOTAR? I assume NOTAR is stealthier than Fenestron so if I would ever design a stealth chopper, I'd probably put NOTAR.

A support aircraft simply won't be needed unless the team intends to travel across continants and oceons to perform on a regular basis in which case a AN-12 with some spare engines/a spare aircraft wouldn't be amiss.

drones are more effective

substantially so

outfitting civilian aircraft to carry weapons is neither cheap nor a quick process, outside of adhoc installations.

Any small sports/trainer aircraft could be conceibably given some kind of simple weapons fit given the will to do so. See the tamil tigers and thier zlin Z-43s

tbh you would probably be better off with helicopters

they're more readily adaptable to COIN warfare

In turnfights and maneuverability department. And also speed. In short, best dogfighter, interceptor or both.

the Sabre is a bit of an odd one out there.

it's atleast a generation older then the others you've listed

you can probably reverse engineer a comparison from the Sabre's comparison to the Mig15

Either interceptor or turnfighter I'd say. Interceptors are generally built for acceleration and top speed to ... intercept.

Has anyone ever done a prop hub gun with a radial engine before? Can't think of any examples but can't see why it can't be done either.
