One of the tanks assigned to the 1st Rychlá Divize during its battle with the 2. Panzer-Division. It was not painted in the normal three-tone czech camo as it was rushed from the factory with just a basic olive-drab paint job and was sent to the division.
On April 20, 1938, the Czechoslovak Army placed an order for 300 of the ČKD V-8-H model tanks. The ČKD design boasted 32mms of thick frontal high-quality armor plating, a max road speed of 44 km/h and an offroad speed of 25-27 km/h. It had about 6 hours, or 150 km of endurance with its 270 liter gas tank. Its main gun was a 47mm A11 gun with with a max rate of fire of over 10 rounds per minute and was able to penetrate a 40mm armor plate at a 30 degree angle at 1,000 meters. The army bought these tanks out of the ever deteriorating international situation and held issues about the relative high costs even to the expensive LT vz. 38s, which were also being constructed at this time, but they understood that the very survival of their nation dependent on it.
Its contemporary tank in the German army existed as prototype designs in the scare Panzer III models, the bulk of German tanks in 1938 were of the Panzer II and Panzer I types, which were on the losing end if faced against the LT vz. 35 tanks which made up the bulk of the Czechoslovak tanks at this time, the other major design being the LT vz. 34s, which had been regulated to infantry division recce sections. The newer designs of the LT vz. 38 and the V-8-H, designated the ST vz. 39, were more than capable to engage the German tanks. The Germans however knew little to nothing about both the LT vz. 38 and the ST vz. 39, which would prove to be a very nasty surprise.
The German invasion, following Czech refusal to give up the Sudetenland, was meet with stiff resistance. The German army was unprepared to fight an equally competent foe, and the Germans fell in droves attempting take the Czech border forts in the process. Over time, the Germans broke though in a certain area, spearheaded by 2. Panzer-Division. This was met by the 1st Rychlá Divize (RD-1) which had been augmented with an additional armored battalion of LT vz. 35s. RD-1, along with supporting infantry divisions, engaged the 2. Panzer-Division along its right flank. The division had been recently outfitted with new tanks, the LT vz. 38 and the ST vz. 39. These tanks were virtually unknown to German intelligence services, and were a seriously shock to the German divisions suddenly engaging tanks they had never seen before. 2. Panzer-Division along with the 12. Infanterie-Division were cut off and annihilated by the Czech forces in the counter-attack.
Following the loss of nearly 24,000 German troops either captured or killed, German opinion of the war turned sharply. The head of the German counter-intelligence organization Abwehr, Hans Oster, along with dozens of high-rank German officials organized a large military force and launched a coup d'etat, storming the Reich Chancellery and in the ensuing battle, managed to kill Adolf Hitler. After the initial shock of the coup, the German acting government offered a ceasefire to the Czechs, who accepted it eagerly. In the meantime, the government began the restoration of the German monarchy, inviting then-in-exile Kaiser Wilhelm II to retake the throne.
