Caravels are long range starships optimized for exploration and survey missions beyond the Core Systems. Caravels are capable of jumps of over 25 LY* and can operate independently for up to 10 years (Assuming a crew of 20-30). Caravels are capable of atmospheric flight and are capable of amphibious V/STOL operations on Earth-like planets up to 2 M⊕. (For V/STOL the engine pods rotate and doors open in the nose to allow the use of an additional lift engine.) The crew accommodations include 2 internally mounted contra-rotatng habitat centrifuges for crew health while cruising or parked in orbit. The ships are fitted with 50 Acceleration tanks. The ship's main hangar has space for 2 MSV-22 Flying Fox Dropships. Defensive armament is 6 x Phaser Arrays plus an undetermined number of missile banks.
Plan to do a proper statblock and slightly less halfassed writeup later.
*For the FT Setting I have worked out for this in my head FTL is done via the use of wormholes. There are two methods used, the jump wherein a pair of wormholes is generated aboard a ship, one is launched forwards at an absurd relativistic speed towards the destination. As the exit wormhole reaches the destination the ship enters the other wormhole and is transported to the destination system, x lightyears away (and x years into the future.) The second method is through the use of existing pairs of wormholes the so called "Star Net". Since it's a bitch to maintain wormholes for long periods of time, only the Core Systems are able to maintain connections to the "Star Net". This leads to the situation where round trip travel between developed worlds can be done in a few weeks, traveling from the Core Systems to an outlying colony not yet connected to the "Star Net" can have round trip travel times as experienced by the Core Systems that easily stretch into the decades.
