Weirdest law in your nation

Postby Huswyae » Sun Jul 10, 2016 10:05 am

Huswyae's strangest law is that it is totally illegal to make tea by putting the milk in first. The law isn't enforced, because the majority of the population agree that the milk goes last.

We base our laws off of what the majority think.

Extract from the Kyosikto Idea, section about marriage and childraising:

...every man or woman that contracts wedding is obligated to bestow a minimum of two children. The interval of birth should not be longer than two years. The bestowing of two children incentives the teaching of fraternal love and help, as well as a contribution to make Ghovatstan's population grow prosper. Any parent that loses a child before it reaches the age of majority (20) will be fined for negligence, and urged to bestow another, willing or not. Any parent that is widowed before the reaching of the children's majority age will be urged to pick an assistant or substitute husband/wife and hold him/her until the children reach age 20. Harming of a children or spouse means one strike on a penal sheet the parent has to hold. Three strikes, and the family will be forever be disbanded, along with a detention up to 10 years (if the result of harming is death, capital penalty is applied), and the irrevocable status of "unfit parent or spouse"...

The strangest law in our country, technically in force to this day, is that the Queen of Vallermoore cannot kidnap anybody else's daughter and forcibly adopt her. This was brought in centuries ago after Queen Yocasta the First went slightly insane when her daughter died and started kidnapping and then murdering other people's daughters when they failed to be just like her original daughter. Technically a Queen can be dethroned for such an offence.

"Any form of protest is prohibited from occurring within 500 feet of the Gandoorese monarch"

Gandoor hasn't had a monarch since 1902 and we officially made the metric system the sole legal system of measurement in 1952. The law only still exists since the modern day Democratic Republic of Gandoor is the official successor state to the former Nzardom of Gandoor and all laws were inherited to it and it was just never repealed.

It is illegal to use the Imperial measurement system, every household must have at least one bottle of gin and one bottle of tonic water, and it is perfectly legal for citizens to build their own fusion reactor unless they live within ten miles of a national park or nature preserve.

Many of our laws seem strange to foreigners. However, they are there for the common sense reason of preventing attacks by undead, demons, and other occult forces.

For example, internet usage is restricted to the nobility. At first glance, this might seem like it would restrict commerce and freedom, but it actually makes sense when you consider that ghosts can travel through the internet. After you take all the pains to seal off your house towards the occult, you let a ghost in through the internet. Only the nobility are judged to be educated enough to know how to use the internet without risking a haunting.

Or take the obligation to cremate. While ghosts can still arise, zombies, skeletons, ghouls, and vampires cannot form from cremated bodies, so this is a sensible reduction of a danger to the community rather than a restriction on the freedom of religion.

Most of our laws regarding clothing raises eyebrows among foreigners. However, clothing is an important sign of social status, so is important in keeping boundaries and making sure that everything functions properly. Also there are some practical reasons, like that no clothing may cover the mouth so that we can tell if someone is trying to cast a spell. This means no veils covering the mouth, no ski-masks, etc.

And of course, killing a cat can result in being burnt at the stake, which surprises foreigners.

This land is inhabited by an ancient evil that cause the dead to rise, demons to lurk in shadows, spirits to haunt everything. We have cultists, witches, ghosts, zombies, werewolves, vampires, wraiths... just about any dark force you can think of! Our traditions and way of life is designed to cope with this sinister presence.

Some of our best products are silver bullets, silver crucifixes, oaken stakes, salt, and garlic. We export a lot of sulfur (collected from defeated demons' lairs).

We have lots of cats because cats are good creatures, seeing invisible and fighting evil spirits every day. How else do you explain all the things cats do?

Slapping the Deputy Prime Minister is illegal and doing so will result in a $5 fine. (This does not apply to the Prime Minister, who can be slapped.)

It is illegal to eat sushi in the presence of the Prime Minister's wife. Doing so will result in a $50 fine. (One of the former Prime Minister's wives was disgusted by sushi, and so this weird law came about.)

It is illegal for a civilian to be in possession of antimatter, on penalty of death. This has obvious reasons but it's still kinda funny that such a law exists in the first place.

Easily, the weirdest law in the Ascendancy of Cártána is the Senate Charters of 2200 CA (c. 1499 AD), and their replacement in 2680 CA (1979 AD).

The Ascendancy of Cártána is, by its charter, an absolute monarchy. The Senate Charters created an executive government and legislature within the framework of that absolute monarchy, which was preserved as tradition.

High Kings and Queens have voluntarily given up most of their executive and legislative power since the original Senate Charters were passed, with the exception of the Charters Crisis of 2677-2680 CA (1976-1979 AD), during which High Queen Kiriel III ruled absolutely in the aftermath of a constitutional crisis.

We have a few laws that foreigners may find strange:

Every person living in a parish must pay a biennial tax towards the upkeep of the church.
Islam, Scientology and Buddhism are banned religions.
People who are not registered as a Protestant Christian must pay a tax towards the upkeep of the church.
Every registered Protestant Christian, no matter denomination, must attend their local parish church on Easter Sunday, Michaelmas and Christmas Day, unless granted exemption.
A railway company may not close a line or station without Parliamentary approval.
Every male must wear a woollen cap on St Blaise's day.
The internet may only be accessed through branch of the Royal Library.
No private company may carry letters weighing less than 8oz at a cost lower than the general postage rate of Royal Post.

Human on nonhuman crime is ignored and encouraged by the government.
'Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.' (II Timothy 4:1-5 NKJV)
