The Arthurian Federation consists of twelve states, known as cantons. Of these cantons, three are city-cantons, including the capital city of Vestmanaeyjar.

As administrative units within the Federation each canton is technically a semi-sovereign state, although since the mid-19th century in the common calendar (the 10th century in Arthurian Reckoning) they have effectively become non-state actors. Prior to this, the cantons held large amounts of autonomy with only a loose confederal structure uniting them.

Each canton possesses its own constitution, legislature (the Logting) and head of government (the President-Logmaður). They also operate their own Logreglan (police forces) with support from the federal Logreglan and can technically engage in bilateral international agreements with other sovereign states. The Basic Law of the Arthurian Federation bestows each canton with equal degrees of explicit rights and duties, while their own constitutions define their systems of government. All cantons have adopted a parliamentary government with similar, if not identical, political parties as at the federal level.

The cantons are also represented at the federal level by the Landting, the upper chamber of the the Federal Parliament, which assigns each cantonal government a number of seats. The cantonal governments can select representatives to fill those seats, and those representatives must in most situations abide by instructions from the canton (exceptions are listed in the Basic Law). In practice, the cantonal President-Logmaður and their deputies almost exclusively take up these seats. The number of seats each canton is allotted in the Landting is determined by the Basic Law, which states that: "Each Canton shall have at least four votes; Cantons with more than six hundred thousand inhabitants shall have five, Cantons with more than one million inhabitants six votes."

There are no provisions in the Basic Law for a canton to secede from the Federation. It is not an issue affecting Arthuria presently, but some international legal scholars and practitioners have argued both for and against the notion of secession.

Beneath the cantons are the communes. The communes are the smallest constitutionally-mandated level of government and lie wholly within cantonal borders - no communes are split between more than one canton. All communes are of a roughly equal size in terms of population, each one comprising 124,000 inhabitants within a margin of error. Because of the federal system as well as Arthuria's sparse rural areas, it has proven nearly impossible to achieve more equal population divisions than this. Each commune is divided further into four wards. The wards are legally only administrative units to assist cantonal and communal governments in implementing laws and policies, however most possess some form of 'citizen caucus' which assists in local decision-making at the understanding of the relevant government. There are 67 communes in the Arthurian Federation, split into 268 wards.

Each commune will, as a constituency, elect three Folkmaður to the Folkting, creating a rough level of representation of one Folkmaður for every 42,000 citizens. Such elections use the Single Transferable Vote (STV), and the outcome is a Folkting chamber of 201 Folkmaður.

Instead, it has 50+ (the number grows as planets are made habitable and colonized), moderately self-governing Dominion Worlds under its control. Each Dominion World has up to three dozen Provincial divisions that are slightly self-governing under it which are then split up to several city-centered Domains. Again, the exact number of all these divisions changes depending up colonization and growth of Imperial holdings.

The Commonwealth of Noraika is centralized and unitary state, but it does have its administrative divisions. The nation is divided into 12 Prefectures. Overall, these Prefectures have little to no power, and almost no ability to make laws or regulations. For the most part, the duties of the prefecture is to serve as a coordinating body for the implementation of Acts of Parliament, and to ensure the proper enforcement of those Acts of Parliament.

Outside of fulfilling national policy the Prefectures also also serve as a place to report on local issues, and relaying those concerns to their national Ministers or Administrators, or, in severe cases, directly to the Premier and the Monarch. For example, local health centers would report to the Prefectural Ombudsmen about supply shortages or requests for additional resources than initially allotted, and would progress to reporting to the Minister for Health and Medicine if they felt their concern had not been addressed.

In Prussia, the country is partitioned into 5 Großregionen (States), 3 Kolonialregionen (Protectorates) and 1 Militärkontrolregion (Military Occupied). (Note: the Military Occupied regions are in progres of being integrated into the country and soon into a state)
