This nation does not represent my actual views - in fact, it's the exaggerated opposite. For a nation more in line with my beliefs, try New Birgland.

Full Name of Nation: Shinsivinus Impiryu Caelestias
Common Name of Nation: Caelestiam
Government Type: Nigh-Absolute Monarchy (Limited by Honor Codes and Constitution. Monarchy retains great power, however).
Economic System: Capitalism (With minor "Xenosocialism" on big international corporations.)
Average tax rate: 30% (Not good with numbers OOC. Probably inaccurate to lore?)
Head of State: King Mathias Andouin I
Head of Government: King Mathias Andouin I

Do you have democracy?: Yes. Local and Provincial Democracies.
Are your nation's leaders elected by a vote?: National Leader is a hereditary monarch. Local and Provincial Leaders are democratically elected. Heads of Government Department appointed according to merit by King.
Is the legislature an independent branch of government?: Half Yes. The King ultimately makes the decisions on a national scale. However, code and constitution demands that if the majority of the population demands referendum, the King must grant it. In which case, the democracy makes the decisions. For the most part, they choose to let the King do much of the work.
Do the people elect representatives to a legislature?: Local Maiors (Mayors) are elected to cities and their districts. Sheikus/Sheikas are elected to provinces. When the King lets an issue slip to the democracy either by decree or by referendum, these guys are the ones to create solutions effective within their own provinces and cities.
Are there two or more parties in your legislature?: Yes.
Are elections open to all?: Excluding criminals and foreigners. Yes.

Does your nation have:
Freedom of speech?: Yes.
Freedom of thought?: Yes.
Freedom of association?: Yes.
Freedom of the press?: Yes. Outright dishonesty and libel is illegal.
Freedom of religious expression?: Yes.
Freedom of assembly?: Yes. Peaceful assembly.
Freedom to protest?: Yes.
Right to bear arms?: Yes. Swords and guns. Guns may be concealed. They must however be registered.
Right to a trial by jury?: For crimes of lower severity. Severe crimes and crimes with copious amounts of technical jargon are not done by jury.
Innocent until proven guilty?: Yes.
Right to a fair and speedy trial?: Yes. Speedy depends on circumstances but we give it our honest-to-God best shot.
Right to have legal representation in trial?: Yes. Miranda Rights apply.
Equal protection under the law?: Yes.
Equal rights for all genders?: Yes. All two of them.
Right to privacy?: Yes.
LGBT rights?: Yes. Transgenders may not receive sex reassignment surgeries, but only because of the lack of medical advancement. Doctors and scientists state that SRS is a Victorian-esque medical atrocity. And until we can advance enough to make SRS-acquired reproductive systems fully functional, we will not offer them. It has nothing to do with civil rights.
Equal rights for all races/ethnicities?: Yes. We stressed this from the beginning.

Has your nation outlawed indefinite detention?: If this means "outlawed life sentencing," then no. I'd it means "picking someone up and not letting them go," then yes.
Are the police and military separate entities?: Yes. There ARE special police forces/SWAT units, and there ARE military police.
Do police require warrants?: Yes. Except in emergencies.
Do police require probable cause?: Yes.
Is torture prohibited?: No. Nothing cruel and deadly, however. Torture is minimalist.
Is the judiciary an independent branch of government?: No. It belongs in the Department of Justice, a department of the Ministry of Defense.
Is slavery illegal?: Yes.
Are soft drugs legal?: No.
Are hard drugs legal?: No.
Are porn and prostitution legal?: No. Hardcore is illegal. Softcore is legal.
Are internet, radio and/or TV allowed?: Yes.
Are the internet, radio and/or TV in your country accessible in other nations? : Yes. At .csm for the Internet. Our anime and sitcoms (when translated) are very popular in America.
Has your nation outlawed the death penalty?: No.

Are foreigners/tourists treated with respect?: Yes. Provided their home nation is friendly with us. But obviously we're wary of people who hate us.
Are private industries legal?: Domestic Private Industries are almost laissez-faire, as we trust them to uphold the law and their honor as Caelestians. Regular checks from the Ministry of Commerce also keep companies from using sweatshops and immoral methods of production and sales. Foreign conglomerates are restricted based on infamy. Nestle and McDonalds get heaviest restrictions and are for the most part untrusted by Caelestians.
Is gambling legal?: Yes.

Only "good?"

It's the monarchism isn't it.

I see how it's going to be. Gonna have everything else be pretty much an emulation of a democracy but once a King is mentioned and porn gets a moral but it up its ass, suddenly I'm on the lower end of the "good" category. Despite this nation having been a champion of civil rights since its foundation in lore.

Yeah no. I'm actually really pissed off to hear that, and I kinda want my nation removed from the list now. That's a fuckin' mark of shame right there.

I thought about this for a while, and I realized it's not just my predisposed bias against monarchies (I rescored your nation as a full democracy and you only got 686, still Good) - it's the size of my ranking categories. I made Excellent too narrow. In hindsight, I realized that there were a lot of nations with great civil rights and democratic governments in Good just because they failed a few small categories. Excellent should have been 99 points wide (640-739), like the other categories, and only Perfect should have been the narrow category, since only the best of the best should get that rank. I admit that I did score your nation's government questions lower because of your "nigh-absolute" monarchy", even though most of your government is quite democratic, and resembles a constitutional monarchy which gets a full 25 points. It also probably has something to do with my question weightings, but I can't change that since it would make everyone's score inaccurate. So I'm sorry about this, it's all my bad, and I will be swiftly removing your entry from the ranking. Honestly, I kinda empathize with you, since the same thing happened to my nation on another thread.

Full Name of Nation: The Empire of New Assam
Common Name of Nation: New Assam
Government Type: Constitutional monarchy
Economic System: State capitalism
Average tax rate: 43.34% (basic rate is 20%, medium rate 40%, and higher rate 70%)
Head of State: Emperor Alexander IV
Head of Government: James Meadow, 3rd Earl of Highcliff (First Secretary of State)

Do you have democracy? Yes.
Are your nation's leaders elected by a vote? The Emperor is hereditary and the First Secretary is appointed by the unelected Senate. In theory, the Citizen's Assembly can remove these people and replace them with their own choices, but it is extremely unlikely.
Is the legislature an independent branch of government? (disregard for direct democracies) No, the Senate is the upper house of the legislature and members of executive are drawn from it.
Do the people elect representatives to a legislature? (disregard for direct democracies) The Citizen's Assembly (the lower house) is composed of all adults in the Empire; the Senate is unelected.
Are there two or more parties in your legislature? (disregard for direct democracies) Yes.
Are elections open to all citizens above a certain age? All people over 16 can vote.

Does your nation have:
Freedom of speech? Yes.
Freedom of thought? Yes.
Freedom of association? Yes.
Freedom of the press? Yes.
Freedom of religious expression? Yes.
Freedom of assembly? Yes.
Freedom to protest? Yes, but organisers of large demonstrations need to inform the police beforehand so they can protect public safety. When the police aren't informed, they have the right to disband the protest.
Right to bear arms? Ownership of firearms is heavily restricted. Hunting rifles and shotguns are the only legal guns, and even then you require a licence and a safe place to store it.
Right to a trial by jury? Yes.
Innocent until proven guilty? Yes.
Right to a fair and speedy trial? Yes.
Right to have legal representation in trial? Yes.
Equal protection under the law? Yes.
Equal rights for all genders? Yes.
Right to privacy? Yes.
LGBT rights? Yes.
Equal rights for all races/ethnicities? Yes.

Has your nation outlawed indefinite detention? For normal crimes, yes. For serious crimes like terrorism, no.
Are the police and military separate entities? Yes.
Do police require warrants? Yes.
Do police require probable cause? Yes.
Is torture prohibited? Yes.
Is the judiciary an independent branch of government? Sort of. Almost all courts are politically independent, but appeals can be made to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council where the Emperor and his advisers can make a ruling.
Is slavery illegal? Yes.
Are soft drugs legal? Yes.
Are hard drugs legal? They aren't technically legal, but they are decriminalised.
Are porn and prostitution legal? Yes.
Are internet, radio and/or TV allowed? Yes.
Are the internet, radio and/or TV in your country accessible in other nations? Yes.
Has your nation outlawed the death penalty? No, but it's only used for the most severe crimes.

Are foreigners/tourists treated with respect? Yes.
Are private industries legal? Yes, but the larger ones tend to be nationalised or placed under government oversight.
Is gambling legal? Yes.

It's alright. Thank you for acknowledging everything and giving me an explanation - I was pretty confused.

If you want to put me back up you can, if you want to leave me off the list, you can. I don't mind either way at this point. (The upper half of good is better than the "Almost Mediocre" rank I last held, anyways).

I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to say something. Glad it also got the excellent category boosted. I bet that made a few other nations happy :p

Postby Imperium Sidhicum » Fri Apr 29, 2016 12:32 pm

Full Name of Nation: Imperium of Sidhae
Common Name of Nation: the Imperium
Government Type: elective monarchy/stratocracy
Economic System: planned; limited free enterprise allowed
Average tax rate: 21%
Head of State: the Empress
Head of Government: the Empress

Do you have democracy? Yes (technically, at least; most political officials are elected, but only active and former military servicemen with at least 3 years of service are eligible to vote or run for office)
Are your nation's leaders elected by a vote? Yes (formally, the monarch is elected for life; However, the Empress, the current leader of the nation, assumed the throne without a general election after a lengthy civil war)
Is the legislature an independent branch of government? (disregard for direct democracies) No (the General Assembly, which passes most legislation, is attended both by elected representatives and members of the executive branch; the monarch also has the authority to pass laws directly by decree)
Do the people elect representatives to a legislature? (disregard for direct democracies) Yes (planetary and sector representatives are elected, while military officials attain their office by seniority or chain of command; specific officials are appointed by Imperial decree, and prominent organizations can delegate their representatives according to whatever internal process they deem appropriate)
Are there two or more parties in your legislature? (disregard for direct democracies) No (political parties are considered divisive special interest groups rather than representative of the citizenry as whole, and hence anathematic to the Sidh ideology)
Are elections open to all citizens above a certain age? No (only military veterans with at least 3 years of service are eligible for political rights; earning these rights by enlisting and serving the minimum 3 years, however, is open to every citizen)

Does your nation have:
Freedom of speech? Yes (in that citizens are allowed to express constructive criticism of the government policies; fundamentally criticizing the system and it's ideology, and expressing other openly seditious and unpatriotic opinions is forbidden)
Freedom of thought? Yes (because there's obviously no way of policing every citizen's thoughts; hence they are free to think whatever they please, as long as they keep the inappropriate thoughts to themselves)
Freedom of association? Yes (unless, of course, these associates happen to be enemy sympathizers, subversives or other traitorous scum)
Freedom of the press? No (all media are owned by the state)
Freedom of religious expression? No (Sidhae aren't much into such obsolete superstitions to begin with)
Freedom of assembly? Yes (provided the former is not used to incite illegal activities)
Freedom to protest? Yes (provided it does not disrupt public peace, economy or break any laws)
Right to bear arms? Yes (it is in fact not a right, but a duty of every Sidh)
Right to a trial by jury? No (the Imperial courts do not practice trial by jury, finding it preferable for qualified magistrates well-versed in the law to dispense justice over a jury of easily-swayed ordinary citizens)
Innocent until proven guilty? Yes
Right to a fair and speedy trial? Yes (mostly as a matter of convenience for the authorities)
Right to have legal representation in trial? No (Imperial authorities will not detain a suspect until enough evidence has been accumulated to guarantee conviction, making legal representation an unnecessary formality)
Equal protection under the law? Yes (as far as Sidhae are concerned; humans and xenos are not formally Imperial subjects, and hence not under protection of Imperial laws)
Equal rights for all genders? Yes
Right to privacy? No (due to historical circumstances, Sidh culture has never much valued privacy as an inherent right; the general principle of the law is that those who have nothing to fear have nothing to hide)
LGBT rights? No (in that there are no special laws legislating sexual preferences either way; it is a triviality that the government does not deem necessary to legislate in any manner)
Equal rights for all races/ethnicities? No (the guiding principle of Imperial law being that "there are Sidhae, and everyone else"; those falling under "everyone else" have no formal rights whatsoever, and are free to manage themselves however they see fit, provided it does not conflict the interests of their Sidh overlords)

Has your nation outlawed indefinite detention? No (those deemed to be a threat to national security can be detained for as long as necessary)
Are the police and military separate entities? Yes (though their functions often overlap, and worlds under military administration are policed by the military rather than Urban Security)
Do police require warrants? No (as said before, by the time the authorities deem it necessary to make arrest, enough evidence has been accumulated for an immediate conviction; searches can be carried out on grounds of suspicion, though officers of the law are liable to penalty should the search turn up no evidence of wrongdoing)
Do police require probable cause? Yes (in that the authorities are forbidden to arbitrarily detain or search citizens with no evidence of wrongdoing; this, however, does not apply to surveillance, the authorities keeping tabs on pretty much everyone)
Is torture prohibited? No (torture is commonly used as a form of punishment, but rarely as a method of extracting information due to it's inefficiency)
Is the judiciary an independent branch of government? No (judiciary institutions operate under the auspices of the Ministry of Justice)
Is slavery illegal? No (it is legal to enslave members of non-Sidh species; enslavement of Sidhae is both strictly forbidden, and unthinkable - a proper Sidh is expected to resist attempts of enslavement to the death, failure to do so negating his Sidh status)
Are soft drugs legal? No (the creation of a Sidh body represents a sizable state investment, so the state has a vested interest in dissuading citizens from substance abuse that might decrease productivity and increase their maintenance costs)
Are hard drugs legal? No (see above)
Are porn and prostitution legal? Yes (in that they are not legislated in any manner; personal participation in the sex industry in any capacity is, however, strictly forbidden as disreputable and unbecoming of a Sidh; consumption of sex industry services, however, is unlegislated, as is indirect profiting (such as extorting a human sex enterprise) from it)
Are internet, radio and/or TV allowed? Yes (why wouldn't they be)
Are the internet, radio and/or TV in your country accessible in other nations? Yes (technically, at least; in practice, the technological difficulties involved in providing such services over interstellar distances precludes outsiders from accessing them for most part; even less of them are actually interested in accessing them due to, uh... specific circumstances)
Has your nation outlawed the death penalty? No (in practice, death penalty is rare and reserved for military justice; civil authorities prefer more... imaginative punishments to which death is often coincidental, but not necessarily intended)

Are foreigners/tourists treated with respect? No (due to the Imperium having been at war with all of it's few neighbors for centuries, few foreigners are interested in visiting the Imperium as anything else than spies or armed invaders to begin with; the same fact has led to rabid xenophobia within the general populace; that being said, Sidhae will treat the occasional visiting dignitaries with cool civility since the state interests demand so)
Are private industries legal? Yes (in a very limited capacity; any small business that grows large enough is eventually taken over by the state; this serves to keep the economic production in line with the state interests, and also to prevent the accumulation of resources and capital in the hands of a few private individuals)
Is gambling legal? No (though as with most disreputable services, it is available within the human ghettos where most Imperial laws do not apply)
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.
