We have a diverse species makeup of humanoids with fur, scales and skin (though I hear that actual makeup is only used by the latter group, so that's a misnomer). Some of our humans have skin ranging from tanned to brown (although the very dark-skinned live mostly in the tropical climate of Vantanas, a continent nominally controlled but barely affected by the Empire), but we don't keep a census on this kind of stuff. In any case, over the past millennia our species has intermingled enough to give certain recessive traits to almost everyone, so the traits that indicate race in other worlds may just spontaneously come out in any family. It's like hair color.

Edit: And don't give me that about brown skin being incompletely dominant instead of recessive. We have sapient, bipedal cats and magic.

Every race known to Earth is still present in this population, but they have been deprecated and no more are being produced. Therefore, they are quickly becoming extinct.

Considering the fighting that used to go on between them, we were a bit surprised to find out that they perform pretty much equally in the mines after being subjected to the right amount of brutality given the proper incentive.

Betas are fraught with problems, from our perspective. Those from areas of high ethnic tension often have to be kept separated to prevent infighting. Almost all of them will rebel or try to escape at the drop of a hat. And they're somehow both wily and stupid at the same time. Plus, they take a lot of fuel and water to run, develop mental and physical glitches from the 20-hour workdays, and are just generally a huge PITA to deal with.


Humans from the Approved DNA Codec:

These humans are all of one, new, race that has been developed specifically as slaves to work doing mining, the hard labor of oil extraction, and other such industrial work. They come from our Cloning Centers and are generated based on the latest advancements in DNA-based programming, which is constantly being improved. They combine the best traits ("best" according to our definition, of course) of all the varieties of humans, and the traits a few other Earthian lifeforms as well. We have also developed code from the ground up for desired effects that weren't present (and therefore couldn't be ported from) any known Earthian life.

These slaves are (truly - it's in the Code) extremely loyal and eager to serve their robotic masters. They need no actual sleep; only a couple hours of rest per day. They are stronger than Betas. They need less fuel. They are also more able to figure out problems that arise in the course of their work, allowing them to do their work with less instructive supervision.

Soon, this race of humans will be the only extant version.
