National leader and length of time in office in your nation

Postby Astholm » Tue Feb 16, 2010 3:30 pm

Our nation is currently in crisis, so to speak. We have had 2 prime ministers over the last 6 months, both unelected, and are now on our 3rd, Steven Rutherford, also unelected, former Trade Ministry employee.

Until 2009 stability was fairly good for prime ministers here; 3 - 4 years in office was common, if not the rule.

What's the average length of time your nation's prime minister/leader lasts in office, and also, have you ever had to have unelected leaders temporarily? (in our case, due to apathy from the populace)
[spoiler=About Me]Based on the United Kingdom, but enlarged version with alternate history.
On IIWiki
I have multiple puppets here; only a select few are used to represent the continent of Astholm; others used represent Westholme, and do not artificially boost my nation's statistics.Previously i used puppets with nation names that did not identify as Astholm (e.g. Australis Australia; now all new puppets use ASTHLM, NORTHLM, SOUTHLM, WESTHLM (HLM denoting The Holmes.
NOTE: Other uses of Astholm here have a different continuity and refer to work created by the user Astholm, not the nation

The king or queen rules until she or he dies or steeps down in favour of his or hers oldest offspring, so in fact have none of our leaders been elected.

The average Monarch rules for 62 years.

Of course they can be voted out of office just as they're voted in.

Eswperantujo 2 has not had a head of state until recently. President Aleksandra Kuiristo was in office for a year. We have now extended the President's and parliament's office terms to 15 months. President Roza Kamparano's term of office is slightly longer than this, from 16 December 2009 to 20 March 2011.

Our Queens rule for life or until she decides to hand over power to her daughter. The Council is a different matter, they are elected and serve a term of 4 years. No Council member may be elected to the same position more than twice.

Our leaders rule for as long as the public want them to. They can either be voted out, or slain in single combat. If they are slain in single combat, the winner becomes the new head of state for as long as the public see fit. However, it is quite hard to arrange a duel with a head of state, and as such that law has not been enforced for over 200 years. As a nation, we don't condone violence, but We have kept the single combat rule purely for a laugh.

Trade and Tryon's Prince will serve until his death. Upon his death a new prince will be elected after a 5-year long campaign period. During that time, the government is controlled by the Trade Council, the Prince's closest advisors. Should the Prince be assassinated, the head of the Trade Council would take over until the election could take place. The current head of the Trade Council is Minister of Education and Duke of the Lowlands, Jan Ulrich Von Stevenson. The Vice-chair of the council is currently Minister of Transportation Seamus O'Malley.

We have a President of the Commonwealth, who is elected by a direct popular vote. In order to be elected, a candidate must secure both the most votes and a majority of votes. In, for example, a three-way election, the candidate who gets the most votes would only win if they also got more than 50%. Balloting is set up so that each voter indicates his or her top 3 choices in order of preference. In a hung election, the candidate who receives the least votes is eliminated. The ballots that listed that candidate as their first choice would automatically switch votes to each one's second choice. This results in an instant runoff election and ensures that a candidate is able to get more than 50% of the vote. The President serves for a term of 6 years, with a two-term limit.

The President is the Chief Executive of the Commonwealth, and both by law and in practice runs the day-to-day operations of government ministries and departments.

The Assembly of the Commonwealth, the 300 Delegate legislative body, chooses the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth. Delegates to the Assembly are elected by direct popular vote from their voting districts. Each district sends 3 delegates to the Assembly. Each delegate serves a 6 year term, and 1/3 of the Assembly's seats are up for election every 2 years. Each district elects 1 delegate every 2 years. The 100 districts are redrawn every 10 years such that each district has an equal number of eligible voters.

The Prime Minister both by law and in practice runs the day-to-day operations of the Assembly. In the event of the President's, death, resignation, impeachment, or inability to discharge his or her duties, the Prime Minister immediately assumes the Presidency. A new Prime Minister is then chosen.

The Prime Ministers, who are first voted heads of their party, each serve 5 years terms before another election has to be called, though one can be called before that time.
There is no actual limit to how long a PM can serve though the average maximum has been 3 terms. The longest was 5.

The emperor rules until death, and the chancellor serves for a term of three years, and is elected by the Imperial Senate.

The current emperor is Quintillius Maximus VII and the current chancellor is Appius Antonius (in second year of his term).

Our nation's Chancellor is selected by the ruling party and hailed in for life. There is nothing short of assassination that can remove the Chancellor from his position.

Megatron has been the Leader of the Decepticons since even before we were a nation, and will remain so forever, or until someone actually manages to permanently deactivate him and all his Saves.

If such a terrible thing as Megatron's deletion were to occur, whoever managed to do it would become the new ruler, having proved his superior strength and skills by his success. He would remain in the position until deposed by another rival in the same way.

Our current leader is Vladmir Kruzettskii, age 33, and he has been in office for only 1 year. Next in line to run are Valeria Makarov, Karron Liam, and Dimitri Kobin. Valeria is the daughter of one of our founding fathers and, if elected, she will be the first New Russian female Tsar. Karron is a Provincal Governor; and Dimitri is the Mayor of Nü Moskva. Just because of our name, we are not affiliated with Imperial Russia, and even though we call our leaders "Tsars", we do not use the Tsardom System, we use Communism.
