Field-stripping the AN-94 isn't really that complex.

That's odd. I seem to remember puz not being too friendly toward the thing back in the day when he posted a big something about it. But that was threads ago and I can't find it.
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

I have no doubt that it's somewhat more complicated than pulling apart an AKM.

But the "somewhat" seems to be very hyped by Russian internet forums and the media.

I am more concerned as to what to do if anything inside were to jam up. I mean it just looks like there are far more moving parts to go wrong.

If you can't clear it by racking the bolt a few times you probably shouldn't be fucking with it.

That's my concern basically. The comparative ratio of such failures to those you can fix.

^ this.

90% of jams in the AR-15 platform are magazine or feed related, and can be cleared by simply pulling the magazine and racking the charging handle a few times, if it's anything beyond that you are probably going to need tools to even get the weapon apart as the entire thing will be bound up.

With other weapons like the Ak and most likely the AN-94 it will be similar, if the jam is something other then a feeding issue you go and find another weapon to shoot at the enemy.

Soldiers generally don't try taking their rifle apart in the middle of combat unless they literally have no other choice.

So I have this idea for a sensor controlled barrel change system for a belt fed MG. Basically there would be a thermocouple built into the barrel which measures its temperature and displays in on a screen on the weapon's receiver. When the barrel gets hots enough the screen would start flashing red, indicating to the user that he should change the barrel. The screen could also serve as an electronic round counter with the colors of the numbers changing as the barrel heats up (starting off blue, turning orange, then red, then flashing red, etc)

Thoughts?

This seems to be overdoing it. If your barrel gets OMG INCREDIBLY HOT you'll see it anyway.

Also modern machine gun barrels can fire truly preposterous amounts of ammo before replacement.

This exists, with the added advantage of having an automatic mechanism for changing barrels.

I was thinking of something built into an LMG or GPMG which can be carried by an infantryman, not something intended to be mounted to vehicles.

Then no it's not worth it.
It's far more effective to teach your LMG gunner about the proper operational fire rate of his weapon.

The RMG 7.62 is apprently being considerd as an upgrade to the Leo2s coax.

That's the problem with the AN-94 actually. When it does suffer a malfunction, due to the complexity of its burst function, there's a very real threat it won't be solvable by racking the charging handle a bit.

The obvious answer is to break physics so that high preassure metalstorm systems don't blowup. Once we do that we will be able to go beyond hyperburst into ultrasupermegaburst.
