Isn't a gun-mortar just a mortar being fired horizontally? Or is it some kind of specialized weapon like this:

A gun-mortar is a mortar capable of low-angle fire, in direct-fire.

The Vasilek is an example of this, as are the 2S9 Nona and 2S31 Vena SP gun-mortars.

Well if we are looking at low angle direct fire weapons I imagine that technically you could probably, sort of fire a Ymir off in direct fire. I know that back in the day my DOD equivalent was proposing a strait up A-HE shell.
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

I would imagine it's inherently easier to load a mortar for direct fire from the breech.

I imagine the moritzer would just be Vasilek-type towed gun-mortar firing 105-107mm rounds.

Looks very similar to the 75mm Pack Howitzer I forget the type designation of. How come?

You would imagine wrong. 60mm mortars can and have been used as direct fire assault guns in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Gun-mortars are just easier to use from turrets.

Because it's the 4.2" mortar on the 75mm's carriage.

Thus, the howtar.

Galla worships at the altar of the infantry mortar so naturally its entire artillery is just howitzers, gun-howitzers, howtars, mortars, and moritzers.

Vikys weep.

It also worships at the altar of mass and volume of fire so its largest gun-howitzers are 6" diameter and its largest mortars are ~120mm.

Allaneas weep.

A muzzle loaded mortar is easier to load from a near vertical elevation and with a clear and open ceiling.

Zu-23s don't have radar at all. They don't really even have anti-air sights as standards and are only capable of 'blocking fire' as AA weapons. (Except in the latest upgrade modifications where they have AA sights and RADAR coupling and coaxial MANPADs).

So when we were talkin about making a proto-shilka out of ZU-23s, I was assuming it was like the Middle-Eastern contraptions that do this - to shoot up ground targets.

[Yes, people actually do this.]
I was a bit confused because he said ZSU-23 (which as you know means the self-propelled mount) which is indeed radar-guided, but you are referring to the actual "gun" itself.

Should I translate a brief Russian article about potential autoloader systems for breakthrough tanks armed with a 152mm howitzer main gun? I feel I should.

I feel kind of disappointed by the fact you even had to ask that question. Like you don't know us well enough to know that the answer should be yes.
