Most armories keep mags unloaded for different reasons


Depends on the magazines. You'll read a lot on the internet about some mags having those issues. Its mostly bunk provided you don't keep the mag loaded sitting somewhere for months on end or have an at least half decent magazine.

The biggest victim of that myth is the Saiga-12 too, which is just depressing.

tbh I have....40-ish Saiga-12 mags from 4 different countries and all of them work fine. The issues are people not knowing how to magazine I guess.

People were storing them loaded on a closed bolt. The plastic shotshell was then pressing against the bottom of the bolt-carrier for months at a time. Plastic bends, yo. I've left Saiga mags loaded for months at a time (I think my 3in. Buckshot is coming on to a year now), and they've either been left outside the gun or inserted with the bolt held rearward. No shell deformation whatsoever, and shotshell rims aren't compressing the next round down in the magazine, either, if high-brass. Why anyone would leave low-brass target loads in a magazine for longer than it takes to load-shoot-laugh is beyond me. I don't keep magazines loaded with practice ammo 24/7. Only thing loaded 24/7 is stuff I need right now if ever needed, and my "oh shit!" ammo is most definitely going to be inherently loaded in a high-brass shell.

I'm assuming people with guns for defense and military armouries have magazines that are kept loaded for long periods of time. Does that do anything to the spring or is it the constant loading and unloading that wears the spring out?

Springs are not worn from being constantly compressed, only from constant use. Unloading a magazine every time you put it in storage would actually wear the spring faster than just leaving it loaded 24/7. Only way this would change is if the magazine and all related parts are complete pieces of crap.

The closest I've ever been to loaded magazines in an armory are just ammunition.

In AIT, we had an NCO which had some issues that saw him having to turn in his private sidearm. The firearm and ammo were stored together in a large locked cabinet, but the ammunition was kept in an ammunition can and locked up with a specific count of ammunition.

Our armory also had like 20 loose 5.56mm in an ammunition can locked in another, once again locked storage cabinet. Which was then in a locked room, which was also in a locked room.
