The Archangel Conglomerate wrote:Eh. The worst thing I can point to is the mag, really. En bloc clips were kind of obsolete when the Garand and came into production, from what I've heard. The HK36 further exacerbates the issue by having a rather funky method for inserting them. The furniture is astoundingly fugly too. Everything else seemed fairly ok though. The round didn't hold up overly well when compared to the 5,56mm NAVO or 5,45mm Soviet, but they at least made an effort to improve its effectiveness beyond what it normally would have been. Further, the inbuilt optic was a rather nice touch.
The microcalibers was the step to the side. IMO it remains one of the few times a viable concept for a microcaliber was introduced, and that was mostly due to the geopolitical climate. H&K wasn't too terribly sure if what to do with the HK36; they wanted to tr replace everything that wasn't a rifle, and then they wanted it to only replace the rifle, and then they made a new niche for it...it just keeps going on and on.
The EnBlocs weren't outdated with the M1 per se, but they were deffenatly outdated by the 1950s. H&Ks unusual use of EnBlocs can best be described as a way to save weight everywhere I suppose, which I guess, tangenically, reached the point of significance. The stock would have fixed itself in time (I hope) but other than that, the rifle was just kind of...not really doing anything particularly spectacular the M16 wasn't. It was kind of like H&K Emulating the old German design philosophy: " anything that can be made well with five parts can be made equally as well with 22".
I mean I have no problem with anyone using it or anything but it just kinda feels weird to me. There was probably an overarching design group and a family of HK36 rifles in concept somewhere in some H&K designers head who wanted to let them out but could only ever convince them that the rifle/Carbine version was useful.

There's no fun allowed in write-ups!

There's a few but they are hilariously obscure and are all outdated now. The PSS(2) still has some use.

Yeah but its kind of dubious. It's supposed to draw the eye more naturally to the post by giving symmetrical reference points and allow the shooter to sight his target easier by "boxing it in".
It's sights are "better" than the AKs in the respect of unsupported non-stressed shooting, but IMO AK sights are still best combat irons.

Railcannon and free electron laser pls
We all unite under one flag in 2200 as a result of NB crashing and burning with other post-CDI States while RCO expands.
It's kinda fun b/c we officially become the first space fairing continent
