The Archangel Conglomerate wrote:Eh. The worst thing I can point to is the mag, really. En bloc clips were kind of obsolete when the Garand and came into production, from what I've heard. The HK36 further exacerbates the issue by having a rather funky method for inserting them. The furniture is astoundingly fugly too. Everything else seemed fairly ok though. The round didn't hold up overly well when compared to the 5,56mm NAVO or 5,45mm Soviet, but they at least made an effort to improve its effectiveness beyond what it normally would have been. Further, the inbuilt optic was a rather nice touch.

The microcalibers was the step to the side. IMO it remains one of the few times a viable concept for a microcaliber was introduced, and that was mostly due to the geopolitical climate. H&K wasn't too terribly sure if what to do with the HK36; they wanted to tr replace everything that wasn't a rifle, and then they wanted it to only replace the rifle, and then they made a new niche for it...it just keeps going on and on.

The EnBlocs weren't outdated with the M1 per se, but they were deffenatly outdated by the 1950s. H&Ks unusual use of EnBlocs can best be described as a way to save weight everywhere I suppose, which I guess, tangenically, reached the point of significance. The stock would have fixed itself in time (I hope) but other than that, the rifle was just kind of...not really doing anything particularly spectacular the M16 wasn't. It was kind of like H&K Emulating the old German design philosophy: " anything that can be made well with five parts can be made equally as well with 22".

I mean I have no problem with anyone using it or anything but it just kinda feels weird to me. There was probably an overarching design group and a family of HK36 rifles in concept somewhere in some H&K designers head who wanted to let them out but could only ever convince them that the rifle/Carbine version was useful.

There's a few but they are hilariously obscure and are all outdated now. The PSS(2) still has some use.

Dostanuot Loj wrote:Also, question for Puz: Is the square front sight hood on the AN-94 square for a reason?

Yeah but its kind of dubious. It's supposed to draw the eye more naturally to the post by giving symmetrical reference points and allow the shooter to sight his target easier by "boxing it in".
It's sights are "better" than the AKs in the respect of unsupported non-stressed shooting, but IMO AK sights are still best combat irons.

Got suggested into making this thing.
Super rough, only just figured out shape in regards to none of the mechanisms colliding with each other within the rifle.
It will be a caseless, 5mm, helical magazine fed, Bullshitium BlasterTM equipped, OICWesque weapon.

I'm thinking of having the helical mag feed into a not!G11 action, but I don't know how helical mags would fare if the rounds were perpendicular to how they normally are arranged.
Alternatively, P90 mag/feed cause I hate life.

It's particularly effective against the magically inclined as it disrupts their connection to 'the bullshit', causing in addition to the direct energy damage something akin to immediate acute radiation poisoning.
Otherwise it's about as deadly as getting a 40mm grenade flung at you.

A folding shovel is inferior in this context - and, frankly, in most context - to a fixed-blade shovel.

It is :

1. Inherently unreliable.
2. Requires more time to deploy.
3. Heavier and less durable than a comparable fixed-blade shovel.

Possibly also make the pen an ultra-durable tactical pen?

But if your shovel can't fold how are you supposed to use the shovel head as a platform for when you fire the inbuilt mortar?
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

You need this to be tacticool to get all the mall buyers, plus most nations seem to use a folding shovel/entrenching tool so they can be that bad.

I'm sure they are, but I'm not well-versed in the classics. Sci-fi for me is Star Wars, Aliens, Starship Troopers, and Halo, and since your guy doesn't look like any of those things (or anything else that tends to show up in this thread), it seems unique. If only comparatively.

The nations that use folding shovels are nations whose soldiers don't do much digging. They reduce digging capability to save space..

At the time where lots of digging was done (for example, in WW2), most shovels were fixed-blade. I am strenuously objecting to the folding-shovel heresy.
[And of course, IRL, Cold Steel and other organizations marking to the mall ninja also sell fixed-blade shovels].

If short handled folding shovels were any good they wouldn't have to include a proper digging tool as standard equipment on practically every vehicle the military operates
