Allanea wrote:.45 doesn't provide a meaningful performance boost over 9mm sufficient to justify a switch.

.45 ACP has a muzzle energy of 477-835 joules, 9mm has 570-670 depending on cartridge type. Both cartridges have between 63% and 94% likelihood of a one-shot stop depending on the specific type. THere's no actual difference in performance except that 9mm is more compact.

I agree with your conclusions, but I strongly disagree with the way you arrived at them.

Muzzle energy is a meaningless metric when measuring terminal performance. A .50 BMG ball round will often leave wounds no worse than a .45 ACP FMJ round creates. It doesn't start to tumble really until it reaches about 14-15 inches.
Similarly, a 6.5x52mm Carcano FMJ will leave a wound similar to that of a .25 ACP.

Not all energy is delivered to the target equally. If it's stopped by a vest it will leave the wearer with minor injuries. If it passes cleanly through it will leave a narrow wound. You need to create an actual deep and wide hole.

The "one-shot-stop" rates were based on data that is so nonsensical that they can be dismissed as bad science at best and they are probably complete fabrication.

Marshall & Sanow's "research" lacked controlled environments, controlled subjects and had an inconsistent exposure. You can't make any meaningful conclusions from that.

They would have you believe that a .357 anywhere to your torso will have a 96% chance of stopping you while a .25 will have a 21% chance of stopping you. The .357 has no magical heart seeking qualities so the only way for it to have such a reliable stop rate is for it to cause consisten stops even when non vitals are hit, which conflicts with basic human anatomy.

That being said, yes, the 9mm and .45 have comparable terminal performance. The .45 is slightly superior, but not enough to make up for its inherent capacity disadvantage.

Honestly though when it comes to military side arms you can just issue whatever you want. Once you've pulled a pistol you're all out of luck anyway.

It's doubletap lite.

There's a number of merits to it, provided the bullet is manufactured correctly and loaded amicably.

HE and Thermobaric is kind of redundant
Maybe THERM/HE, HEAT and FRAG, or smoke. The problem with The useage of THERM is that it becomes less effective at around 1.8km above sea level, due to depleated O2 level, which is why it may be desierable to retain HE.

By itself yes. It plays a role though.

Alright, I'll switch HE over to Frag. HE will be special issued if a unit is operating above 1.8 km. May throw a smoke round in as well.

Is now 2 HEAT, 2 FRAG, 2 Thermo, 1 Smoke per fire team. Plus spares stashed in the vehicle in case they run out and need more.

EDIT: Didn't even know they made smoke rounds for the RPG.

How's that? The 50 BMG hasn't been around for 95 years for no reason. If you rake an average civilian sedan with a burst from an M2, there's going to be little chance that the car or its occupants will function very well. Certainly a pistol round has neither the range nor the power to do nearly the same to said car with the same amount of rounds.

The barrel is embedded in a plastic trunion of sorts, from what I gather. During prolonged firing, this trunion can heat up and become maliable, thus allowing the barrel to move and lose zero. I can't really speak to how true the reports covering the issue were though, or how much heat it took to deform the trunion. Reports claim anything from there being no issue whatsoever, to leaving the gun in the sun will render it useless.

The most popular suggestion I've seen is to replace the polymer trunion with one of aluminium or steel. I don't believe that would change the gun too drastically.
