Isn't there something going around on how there's metal dust which has the potential to become the new energy source for the world?

Seems that there is researcher on making use of metal, ground down into a powder, as a fuel source of sorts. It's strangely enough carbon neutral, it is recyclable, and depending on the metal used cheap. They say that pretty much any metal can be used in this application so long as it is ground down into a fine powder it will readily combust. The only problem is it is not practical for everyday use as of yet. The most likely candidate will probably be Iron since it is readily available and therefore pretty cheap. Interesting stuff. Doubt that it will become a thing for a couple decades and that is only if oil prices really start sky rocketing.

Problem is, you've still got to get the energy to refine metal oxides into elemental metals so that you can re-oxidize them to run an engine from somewhere. And thermodynamics says this is a losing game. That article even says, if you read past the breathless "zomg metal burns!" hype, that this isn't a replacement energy source, but rather an energy storage medium like a battery.

But by that logic, isn't just about everything only a store of energy? Since energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but converted from and into mass, just about everything is also a store of energy (potential difference).

Materials that have "the potential to become a new energy source" tend to be radioactive, and radioactive dust is the absoloute last thing you want.

Yeah, but there's a practical difference between stuff that we can find lying around in which natural processes have already stored energy that we can liberate (fossil fuels, fissionable isotopes), and stuff that we only get the energy out of that we put into it, minus losses to entropy (batteries, fuel cells, wound springs, metal ores which need to be refined before they can be burned, and the burning of which will release less useful energy than it took to refine them). And then there's energy that's otherwise going to waste that we could harness for useful purposes (solar, wind, hydro).
