Mehmed was a p cool commander and had a track of some pretty heinous stuff; but that said the translations for these things can be shotty and pretty exaggerated. The sight of 20,000 corpses would have been a significantly large city, probably a pretty significant percentile of Târgoviște, if not ALL of it, given its historic population growth/declines. By my estimate that would be 1 in 25 of all of Wallachias population.

There is a point where Microcalibers become ineffective. It's the second they become microcalibers. The problem is you're defining microcalibers wrong.

5mm range is not a Micro. That would be Small Caliber range and are typically SCHVs. Microcalibers fend to be less than 5mm dia; 4.6x30mm H&K or 4.5x26mm MKR, for example.

If you wanted you could extend the definition to abnormally small diameter pistol calibers that try to act as an intermediary between a pistol round and a SCHV rifle roubd as well, in which case you get things like .22TCM, 5.7mmFN, 5.45x18mm PM, 5.8x21mm DAP92, and so on.

The question of NATO greetips using mild or hardened steel: it's also my question, and even then what specific grade of steel are they using, ex. 2800 Maraging?

I'm not NATO, but I use greentips with hardened steel U12A, similar to 5.45 7N22.

Meanwhile I am thinking of nanocrystalline steel greentip ammo right now. Nanocrystalline steel penetrators Y/N?
