The mag does kind of ruin the look. This would look very nice with a mag through the pistol grip, sort of like a really classy uzi...

Good luck to anyone making chainmail. I made a square of butted mail a few years back and hated doing it before I quit and shot the damn thing with a bow.

FWIW, most Western chainmail has been 4 flat rings in 1 riveted ring. The flat rings were punched out of a sheet of steel; being punched meant they didn't have a weak point that can fail like in riveted, butted, or welded. But you still need a way to connect them, so you use the one riveted ring to join them.

Oh i have no illusions as to how tough, boring and fustrating making mail would be, esspecially to make a shirt to fit my lard ass body...

To be honest, unless you actually do enjoy making stuff(and there are lots of people who do), or are penniless, there's no cheaper way to produce chainmail than Asian sweatshops. It's what I did.

But if you do want to do it, it's not particularly hard, just absurdly time-consuming. Here's what I did:

Buy this, this, this, this, and a pair of these.

Cut a length of wire, maybe three meters. Clamp the end of the wire perpendicular to the end of the rod. Wrap the wire around said rod tightly so it looks like this. Cut each ring off, then go to work. There are plenty of good instructions around the web.

Oh i do enjoy making stuff, machine design and assembly is what i do for a living although thanks to the joys of push in pneumatic fittings and modern electrical terminals its farily light and easy stuff.

We all know that doctrine, production costs and all sorts of other things prevented the american army from using the BAR as a replacement for every rifle. And I am inclined to say they were right. But if you will let us delve into the hypothetical. How would an army whose squads are armed exclusively with BAR's perform in WW2? As in just take your average american army and every time you read "rifle" replace with BAR.

Do you know how heavy that thing was? Mind you that was just the original WW1 version, the one they carried into WW2 put on the pounds even worse. Don't get me wrong I love the ol girl just as much as anyone but still there is a limit. It is an LMG and should be used accordingly, aka by the biggest brute(s) in the group and no one else. I would have nothing but sympathy for the poor little saps who had to go into combat in a country that forced all of it's general troops to carry a BAR into battle. Especially on the march, ouch.

A much better service rifle would be something like the Italian BM-59 rifle which was in effect a M1 garand with a magazine:



This would of been nice, somehow add a pistol grip and you would be golden.

The Colt Monitor weighed around 13 lbs, though. Which is still a bit on the heavier side, but Wikipedia says M1 Garands could between 9.5 and 11.6 lbs (I guess this disparity might be unloaded vs loaded weights), so I would think that the benefits of having a select-fire service rifle capable of feeding from the same detachable, 20-round magazines as the squad's LMG would outweigh the disadvantages of having to carry a slightly heavier gun.

Edit: Colt Monitor only weighs ~13 lbs when unloaded. Unsure of loaded weight.

Yeah, mine I made back before you could go on the Internet and get a flat-linked riveted mail hauberk, or a sack of pre-made rings ready for assembly, for cheap. It was pay like $800 for drawn-wire butted from MRL or the like, or make it yourself. And I was a broke college student, and really bored. I used to actually make some pocket cash making the stuff for sale, but after the price crash when they started importing it, the hourly wage works out to less than I could make picking up cans by the highway, so I quit.

This is not true, as I have explained to you before.

While I understand that the mail has mass that the weapon must move, the problem is that your experience is with fighting with weapons that can't really hurt you, wielded by people not trying to kill you. And even with the whole thing with the weapon having to move the mail and fight the mail tightening on the other side of the body, something like a war hammer or a mace simply wouldn't care, especially if there are spikes or flanged involved. You can't really make a mail shirt tight enough so that it can slow down a war hammer or mace without heavily impeding your movement, and possibly your ability to breath.

The BAR was newer intended as a replacement for the M1 Rifle.
