If the infantry are going to be staying in their trenches for an extended period of time it's best to bring up a stack of full-length shovels from the engineering company.

A folding shovel would be stronger if it had two locking points, one being further up the shaft instead of just once on the hinge. But what's the point, just use a normal shovel like a smart pleb.

Same here, Kazarogkai doesn't give general soldiers shovels as general equipment. That's the Engineers and Retainers(Usually the warriors own relatives) job to dig trenches for the troopers to crap in.

But if your shovel doesn't fold, you can't do all of this neat stuff.

The nations that use folding shovels are nations whose soldiers don't do much digging. They reduce digging capability to save space..

At the time where lots of digging was done (for example, in WW2), most shovels were fixed-blade. I am strenuously objecting to the folding-shovel heresy.
[And of course, IRL, Cold Steel and other organizations marking to the mall ninja also sell fixed-blade shovels].

I thought this was for paranoid civilians who at most will dig a poop hole.

If you have time to dig defensive positions or eat food that doesn't come in combat ration packs you aren't demonstrating enough offensive spirit.

To be serious for a moment, in my own personal experience (camping and so on), fixed blade shovels are better. They're much more durable and won't fall apart after extended use like folding shovels often do.

The portability argument for folding shovels is a little odd to me. I always just strapped the shovel to the outside of my rucksack and it was fine. I didn't really notice a huge difference in portability.

Yeah the MMW was for jokes
The IDT is for pain

E: Actually they're right, in a very limited number of situations shovels that fold are any sort of useful. The rest of the time, they',re not as good as the fixed handle and blade shovel. They are, however, sufficent for common use in common soils

Nope even the initial BP loading had a nice cupro-nickel jacket and no patch. There are however quite a few articles about paper patching solid lead projectiles for hand loading .303 for hunting.

On the topic of preparing defensive positions, who gets to lug around sandbags these days? I assume they are carried empty, and filled up with whatever dirt's lying around. Still, thicker materials can get heavy if you're moving them in bulk and I wouldn't want to be the guy who gets to carry fifty empty burlap sacks(or whatever they use).

Also; is there any truth to empty MRE bags being able to be used as sandbags? I believe it, just because those things are damn bulletproof on their own.
