A Loulanese name consists of a given name, or sometimes more than one, and a surname.
Since the Persification of Loulan, many given names have been derived from traditional Persian names, with some Persianised Arabic names filtering in through cultural contact. Many names come from the Persian literature book, the Shâhnâmah or "Epic of Kings". It was composed in the 10th century by Ferdowsi and is considered by many the masterpiece of Persian literature. A few examples of names from the Shâhnâmah include Abtin, Ardashir, Armin, Arzhang, Babak, Bijan, Darab, Daryush, Esfandyar, Javid, Farhad, Farzad, and Yazdan.
Prior to 1955, the majority of Loulanese Tokharis had Chinese surnames; many adopted Persianate surnames after the Loulanese Autonomous Province was granted its autonomy. Chinese surnames are still common, with nearly half of all Tokharis having a Chinese-derived surname.
