Vichekhas Confederal Elections

Postby Vichekhas » Tue Sep 15, 2015 2:47 am

Overview:
It's voting time again in Vichekhas. After a primary term of three years, President Dölušîstäîŧ Ĝolôsļupe Ŧatəseî's position is up for election. Many around Vichekhas are calling for Ĝolôsļupe's re-election, on the grounds that he is a popular candidate, and member of one of the more popular parties, Aliöďed Ðəž (People's party - ), but some are calling for a change in leadership. Many are not content with the direction which Ĝolôsļupe has been leading the nation in, even amongst his own party members.

While some argue that it is time for a different member of the party to come to power, others say that it is best for another party to take the reins. Some suggest that the popular progressive party Ðəžŧuⱪ (Progressive Party - ÐŦ or simply Ðəžŧuⱪ) should come to power. Others still would vote for more obscure parties.

The lines of political battle are drawn.

Political System:
Overview
Vichekhas is a Confederal Republic, meaning that the government remains largely decentralised, and acts as a combined representative government for the member states which comprise Vichekhas (mainly former and current clans and tribes). Each clan has a set number of delegates they may send to the parliament, a conglomerative council which meets regularly in the capital city of Böðeț, and is led by the Prime Minister and President. Furthermore, there is an inner-circle of the President's front-benchers and important ministers, called the Cabinet, which is presided over by the Prime Minister. Members of the Cabinet are chosen by the President before election to office.

The Cabinet has to write all legislation regarding the members' ministries, as well as write any proposals which pass Parliament for approval by the President.

The Prime Minister's job entails organising the important ministers of government to present requests, legislation and proposals to the President. The Prime Minister is chosen by the President before election to office.

The President's job is mainly ceremonial, acting as the head of the state, in duties such as signing off legislations, choosing a cabinet and organising military activities, as well as sometimes presiding over Cabinet meetings and always presiding over Parliament meetings.

Due to the Viched system of government, the Parliament holds most of the real power. However, the President is an important figurehead, and has veto power on all legislation, though only for the first time that it goes through Parliament.

Voting
As set out before, Confederal elections are personal - a vote is always for a Presidential candidate.

In the weeks and months preceding a campaign, a Presidential candidate will compile a cabinet, including the roles of Speaker, Prime Minister and all high up officials in the Cabinet/Front Bench. Cabinets will usually consist of members from a number of different parties for clarity and transparency, though this is not enforced, and some Cabinets are fully comprised of one party's members.

The voting process is simple - one vote per person, and it may be given to any candidate running. After this, the President with the most votes will take office, and the cabinet chosen will do so too. Note that once a parliamentarian applies or is chosen and accepted as a cabinet member for one candidate, they may not change nor choose an additional cabinet to join.

Election news!

With the first day of elections now over, we take a look at how politicians are feeling hot under the collar.

With the current opinion amongst higher-up politicians that President Dölušîstäîŧ Ĝolôsļupe Ŧatəseî will not, indeed, serve a 2nd Term, more progressive members of his party are threatening to leave, making other Aliöďed Ðəž members feel insecure in their own positions, especially those who supported the current president. There is little that the President, or any other members can do about this. However, news of a rallying speech made by Ŧêdôč Əpökļupe Ösəteî earlier today is slowing this dissent, and Right-Wing members of Aliöďed Ðəž are now effectively taking charge on the political scene.

As for members of Ðəžŧuⱪ, they are enjoying a high degree of safety in their current state. Given that Ɉâs Üčadeîļupe Êĝeî appears to be winning by a high margin, most members are rejoicing. However, they are all too aware that complacency could cripple their chances thus far, and are saving partying for after elections have finished.

Ⱪas Ûdêtļupe Ⱪagaðseî and his party of Conservatives are mainly unconcerned for the election results. While they are not winning, nor even in the running for a high-up spot, they didn't expect to, as they are a minority party.

However, the real contenders to watch are Čêdaŧ Ɉikôsaļupe Eučeî and his Čeĝas party. While not expecting a high spot in the runners-up, reports and opinion polls show that Ɉikôsaļupe is gaining in popularity, and while perhaps not making the office of President quite yet, he does have a real chance of becoming shadow President, the leader of the Opposition bloc. This is a very unexpected turn of events, and as said before, the prudent voter will need to watch out for them.

That's all we have time for today. Join us tomorrow for more election news!
