I find the idea of a well trained and well equipped conscript force unlikely, pretty much impossible, really.

And before you say "Switzerland", whom you are obviously emulating here. The Swiss military is not well funded, nor is it well trained.

That's not a problem for me, if it's "impossible" I can make it more plausible; it's not like I'm aiming to RP as a militaristic state anyway.

If you want to emulate Switzerland, you can do that. They are certainly not an incompetent force, their main drawback is lack of funding. For example, the Swiss Air Force can not conduct air intercept missions outside of normal business hours, Monday though Friday

Its just the combination of well trained, well funded and conscripts thats not going to work out so well. I'm sure there will be plenty of reason people wouldn't want to mess with you that don't involve your military prowess, which is exactly what saves Switzerland. :P

My country's lacking in bunkers and mountain passes, but I suppose no one wants to be the guy who ordered his country's armies to turn several thousand bank accounts to dust and plunge the world into a recession, unless they adhered to the "Not even Karl Marx himself would like this, but who the hell cares anyway" school of far left thought of course.

The specific "enough bunkers to house a country's entire population + mountains high enough to noticeably slow down an army's advance" combination, however... at least axolotl seem to come by quite easily here, but I don't think they'd be very useful in a war, not that I know of.

Well, Albania did such a thing, it did kind of kill everything in the nation though.

However that would imply that anything ever lived willingly in Albania at any point in time.

Before Enver Hoxha screwed it up, I suppose Albania wasn't that different from its neighbouring nations - poor, but not poor enough to make its entire population wish they lived somewhere else instead. I heard that some university students from other countries, Greece and Italy among them, go there of their own free will because studying there is cheaper than in their own countries, though.

Shqipëri finally can into prosperity. :p

Sevase wrote:Hello! It must be said immediately that this is actually Phonox from the region. I'm already a member on that nation, this is an alt. Gonna drop this application here!

Nation Name: The United Kingdom of Sevase (Sevase)

Form of Government: Federal Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy

National Leader(s): Monarch: Gabriela IV - Prime Minister: Maria Campos

Population (Please remember our realism guidelines): 61,254,100 (2010 Census)

Estimated GDP: 3,033 Billion NSD

Description of National Culture:
The Sevish people are generally Spanish-speaking (I use a con-language that I base off of Spanish. The name I have for it at the moment is: Casteña.) The name Sevase originates from the 'Sevil' barbarians that conquered the region of Isperia during the second century. These Sevil invaders adopted the traditions of the peoples already there once they began to settle and the resulting mixture of cultures makes much of what Sevase is to this day, bar other developments that occurred later. While the state does not formally recognize a national religion, the majority of Sevish people are followers of Corrozcoanism. Corrozco is a polytheistic religion that originated before the Sevil barbarians. Its pantheon of gods are generally considered to be benevolent and rule over several domains such as the skies, the earth, the sun, and the moon. Modern adaptations of the religion have tended to have smaller pantheons and domains. Overall, over 20 types of Corrozco exist and are formally recognized to exist by the state.

Climate and Geography:
Generally a temperate nation, Sevase is a coastal nation with varying land features. By its coasts, temperatures can be warm, giving the impression of a tropical climate. In land though, due to rising elevations and wind patterns, temperatures can cool down to more temperate levels. Away from the coast, Sevase's topography can generally be described as a landscape dotted with mountain ranges and varying elevations. While not all of Sevase is mountainous, areas in land tend to have high elevations with the highest peak in Sevase (Chiuaticatl) reaching an elevation of approximately 4,840 meters above sea level. Cities/Settlements/Towns in Sevase that are located away from the coast often form along rivers, valleys, or more flatter lands.

National History:
Archaeological records seem to indicate that the first inhabitants of modern-day Sevase were nomadic peoples who populated the area around ten thousand years ago. Evidence of these ancient peoples includes carbon-dated stone tools and other discoveries. It was very likely, and is indicated by evidence, that most people that inhabited the area were hunter-gatherers. Evidence of settlements dates back to around 4000 BCE. This early group of city-states is commonly referred to as the Mestica Civilization. Throughout its existence, the city-states of Mestica flourished alongside each other. It was around 3000 BCE that the Corrozco religion began, with evidence of the first shrines and temples built to the deity of Corrozcoanism dating to those times.

In the year 323 BCE, Mestica was conquered by the neighbouring Gallia Empire during the height of the Empire’s expansion. Before conquest, the region was known for being unruly and difficult to subdue. Written records by Gallian officials affirm that the region inhabited by the Mesticas was to be known as Isperia. Despite its conquest, Mestica culture continued to permeate through the Isperia province and blend in with the culture of the Gallian Empire. In 26 BCE, the Gallia Empire officially named Corrozcoanism as its primary religion.

The Gallian Empire suffered in the first and second century of the common era when it began to succumb to corruption and military weakness. A lack of union started to open up the Empire to invasion from nomadic peoples that each invaded the Empire throughout the second century. In Isperia, the province was raided by nomad barbarians commonly referred to as ‘Sevils’. Along with other invading groups of people, the Sevils succeeded in invading the fractured empire and bringing it to an end in the year of 361 CE when the capital of Illorra was sacked by barbarians.

In Isperia, the invading nomads united under the invading tribal chieftain who named himself ‘King’ of the area he conquered. Although it was never named by King Refugio himself, modern historians refer to this kingdom as The Sevil Kingdom. As a leader, King Refugio conquered many small settlements in Isperia to add onto the small kingdom. King Refugio himself was known to be illiterate, as were most of the Sevil barbarians during this time. The conquered peoples of Isperia succeeded, throughout the lifetime of the kingdom, in converting the Sevil people to the Corrozco. By the time King Refugio’s son, Hermanaldigo, ascended to the position of King of the makeshift kingdom, the culture of Isperia was already beginning to blend with that of the Sevil people.

After the death of King Hermanaldigo in 463 CE, the kingdom fractured. Local rulers came to power when the central King died and each named themselves the rightful King to follow in Hermanaldigo’s position as King. The Isperia region fell into civil war between the five kingdoms during the end of the fifth century until the westernmost kingdom defeated the other kingdoms and emerged as the dominant power in the Isperia region. The Isperia region was united under the new kingdom and it continued to operate as an absolute hereditary monarchy from then on. During the centuries that followed, the original people of Isperia and the Sevil people continued to integrate together. The first usage of the demonym ‘Seviano(a)’ (Sevish, in English) dates to a formal document written by one of Queen Mariella’s personal officials in 857 CE. In this letter, the official refers to the people of the kingdom collectively as ‘Sevianos’ (Sevasians in English). The name for the people began to become popular in usage once it became difficult to distinguish differences between Isperian and Sevil culture.

During the eleventh century, discontent in the kingdom grew as the kingdom suffered widespread famines following a series of very long winters in the years of 1045 CE through 1051 CE. At the height of the struggle, revolts began appearing throughout the kingdom calling for more action from the King. In the year of 1050 CE, a wide scale revolution swept the kingdom that consisted of forces rallied by influential provincial leaders. They succeeded in dethroning King Frallo in 1051 CE, ending the hereditary rule in the kingdom. The united forces that had ousted the king quickly fell into disarray when trying to decide how to fill the vacancy in leadership. A compromise was reached in 1052 CE. Known as the Compromise of Vazquez, the leaders of each group decided that they would elect a king from amongst themselves, to rule over the fractured kingdom. As each leader had previously named themselves ‘King’, the elected King would rule over the five kingdoms in the first United Kingdom of Sevase. While, in theory, the king had ultimate power, the council of trustees (the families of the influential groups that dethroned King Frallo) now elected the monarch from their own ranks whenever the current monarch either passed away or was deemed incompetent.

Immediately following the Compromise of Vazquez, the seat of central power was moved to Puerto Royale. Under its new system, the Sevish kingdom continued to exist, though it was still faced with the challenge of dealing with an inefficient agriculture. The first elected monarch of Sevase, King Beruno, came to be known as a reformer by modern scholars. During his reign, King Beruno nationalized the system of public currency, presenting the Réale as the first unified currency of the kingdom. Taking more direct control of local provinces, King Beruno also began to enforce regulations on agriculture in the local settlements of the kingdom. The changes were met with mixed reactions from Sevish people, and soon there was a notable exodus of people from populated city-centers, forming new rural settlements that were less regulated by the monarchy of Sevase. This resulted in a further expansion of settlements into the more rural areas of Sevase. Many more modern city centers would be formed later where these settlements were founded.

Following the discovery of a rich silver vein in the mountains of Otzatacl in 1732 CE, a small trove of entrepreneurs were quick to take advantage and begin mining operations amidst an era in Sevase where regulations on mining and resource extraction were non-existent. Prompting a new economic boom, the ideologies of free trade and trade began to take hold in Sevase, giving rise to a growth in urban centers. This movement gained more traction in the early 19th century as manufacturing soon became a dominant sector in the Sevish economy. By the end of the 19th century, Sevase was considered industrialized in that a sizeable second-tier economy began appearing while the agriculture from before began to become improved and even more efficient.

In 1865, following the resignation of King Rafael VI, the normal process of succession ended in the ascension of King Guiolamino II. In Sevish monarchy, the monarch is recognized by all five kingdoms after a vote amongst representatives of each kingdom to decide who that monarch will be. The candidate from the Kingdom of Colima, Felipe Iniguez de Santa Rosa, was defeated by Guiolamino in the election process and went on to stage a coup based out of the Kingdom of Colima. Taking advantage of an economic slump within Sevase at the time, Iniguez’s militia was quick to take the nation’s forces by surprise and instituted a surrender of power to Iniguez, becoming one of the only kings in history to seize power through military force. During the reign of King Felipe III, civil freedoms in Sevase notably declined due to Felipe’s tactics at silencing opposition to his reign. However, after several years of unrest following the transition, the nation continued to function and retained some sense of normalcy despite the nationalization of media outlets and stifled civil liberties.

King Ruslan ascended to the throne in 1889 following the death of King Felipe from old age. Ruslan was chosen to succeed Felipe by Felipe himself. King Ruslan’s rule was short, ending in 1897 when he died of pneumonia. With no successor apparent, the representatives of the kingdoms of Sevase barred representatives from the Kingdom of Colima and chose Queen Magdalena II to be his successor upon the throne. One of the first acts of regency by Magdalena was establishing a democratic form of government that would co-exist alongside the monarchy. While originally met with scepticism from the aristocracy, the plan gained support with common Sevish citizens. The decision was aimed towards reducing the potential at other monarchs seizing power in a coup similar to the events of 1866. The body of public representatives initially had the power to override the decision of who to ascend to the throne, but later on went to be granted more powers until King Luis XI ceded all official power to govern, and established the constitutional monarchy and constitution that is still in effect today, in 1913.

Description of National Economy (Major sectors, development, etc.):
A developed country, Sevase is noted for its effort at trying to have a free economy, promoting capitalism in most cases. However, in practice, Sevase's economy is a Mixed Economy. Government regulations generally exist to protect consumers and became common following a period of many private-sector firm mergers that reduced competition within several industries. In modern times, Sevase has a sizable service economy with its largest industries including: finance, transportation/logistics, information technology, and retail. At the same time, Sevase has a smaller manufacturing base that includes several industries. Key industries in the manufacturing sector include pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, electronics, and alloy production. Naturally occurring resources in Sevase are ores and rare-earth-metals. While Sevase does also have several deposits of oil, natural gas, and coal within its borders, the sizes of those deposits are not nearly enough to sustain itself, so Sevase does commonly find itself importing fossil fuels for energy production, a growing problem that national leaders have been starting to consider more and more often in policy-making.

Description of National Military (Please remember our realism guidelines): Sevase's national military is fairly advanced, though small in number. It's two branches include El Ejército de Tiera (Its army), and El Ejército de Agua (its navy). The main purpose surrounding its military is to secure the nation itself, meaning that their forces are primarily used for defense. As such, Sevase does not typically have the ready ability to project military power too far from the homeland. At the same time, a notable example of this is the fact that Sevase's armed forces employ one small-sized aircraft carrier that is mainly garrisoned with rescue helicopters for near-coast operations.

Description of Geopolitical Role: Sevase takes part in geopolitical affairs but usually as a means of some sort of civil discourse (i.e. trade agreements, economic unions, etc.). As it currently stands, Sevase has never been in a status of war with another foreign power and is often noted for being more concerned with its own internal affairs rather than involving itself militarily abroad in other nations. Historically, Sevase has been neutral in international affairs, only using its armed forces for defense.

Roleplaying Example or Link (Please provide at least three paragraphs): I will gladly provide examples and/or even write a response to a prompt if needed!

Notes and Questions: This nation would be an alt nation that has entirely nearly nothing to do with Phonox, who I already have within the region. In fact, I've structured Sevase to have very different aspects from that of Phonox. As far as other issues go, I'm very open to discussion!

What made you choose Pericles? I play Phonox at the moment, and this nation of Sevase is an alt that I’ve played for some time. I’ve noticed a general lacking of a Latin-American themed nation in Pericles, and I was hoping that Sevase might be an appropriate fit! At the moment, I’m applying with this alt-nation under the same guise as Defese/Gerlotio and Demphor/Andallion have done with their alt nations: Phonox and Sevase would not be found colluding with one another ICly. ^.^

Please list any active alts or puppets you may control: I'm Phonox from Pericles! Gasp!

Have you ever controlled a nation that was deleted for poor conduct: Nope!

Have you read and understood the guidelines on our OP: Yup yup!

Well, in the absence of any opposition, I suppose it's time to let you in!

Meanwhile, if we're doing this, I suppose it's time for me to bring in another missing piece.

Nation Name: The Kingdom of Chonburi
Form of Government: Constitutional Monarchy
National Leader(s): King Indra XI Vajra Kityakara Sulawongse
Population (Please remember our realism guidelines): 89 million.
Estimated GDP: 2.225 trillion. The war has cut their GDP per capita by half, and taken away almost half their population besides.
Description of National Culture: The Chon people, mysteriously, are an ersatz of what we would call "Southeast Asians;" they are essentially Indianized Malays. They are Theravada Buddhist, and the powerful triumvirate of nationalism, monarchism, and religious fundamentalism still has a strong hold on their culture and their minds - this effect has been called "the Chon mind-prison." Even after the war, Chonburi is divided starkly into three distinct societies - the aristocrats who dominate politics, the armed forces, and the religious establishment and who are constantly trying to preserve their power; the city-dwelling upper- and middle-classes in Mahanakhon (and a few other cities) who control the business scene and are constantly trying to overthrow the first class; and the unwashed, roiling masses of both rural peasants and impoverished city-dwellers whose unthinking support for the first class at the expense of the second keeps the country from exploding.
Climate and Geography: Chonburi is hot, all the time. It has a humid tropical climate. The eastern highlands are somewhat more humid, but the central and western lowlands are almost unbearable for people who aren't used to it. Those central plains comprise an infinity of rice paddies, palm tree plantations, and fruit orchards that feed the country, dotted intermittently with small towns. Chonburi is the most primate country in Pericles that meaningfully has more than one city; before the war, the largest city (Mahanakhon) had 40 times as many people as the second-largest city, and even now it's 15 times as many.
National History: Vast. The current 'era,' as it were, started in 1784, when the last Thammarat King was overthrown by Buddha Thaksin Udomratchaniwet, now known as "Indra I." Indra I was a great warrior, and he brought the mandala-states of the east under his control. Indra V Mahindragara began the country's modernization in the 1870s, and Indra VII Vitsaputkorn relinquished absolute power in 1931. The country was never able to get a handle on democracy, and for most of the 20th century Chonburi slid between different military dictatorships. The "mind prison" alluded to earlier was first erected in the 1950s, and by the mid-70s was almost unbreakable. Chonburi fought two wars with Aurinsula; they won the first one in 1956 but savagely lost the second in 2012.
Description of National Economy (Major sectors, development, etc.): Right now, they're picking up the pieces from the war, and it seems that they'll continue to do so for a long time. Before the war, the Chon economy was described as "an island of 20 million of the world's wealthiest, best-educated, most productive people, surrounded and supported by an ocean of 140 million illiterate slaves." They leveraged this very well, and the Chon economy, while somewhat unstable, was dynamic, adaptive, influential, and massive. Pre-war, major sectors included aerospace, automotive, information technology, textiles, and - rice. The Chons produce two-thirds of the region's rice, and have the largest food surplus in both absolute and person-calorie terms of any country, even still.
Description of National Military (Please remember our realism guidelines): Before the war (I bet you're tired of hearing that phrase), the Chon military was the terror of the world. They stalked over Pericles much like the German Empire stalked over Europe; they had the best equipment, the best leadership, the best training, and enough sheer numbers to overawe any opponent. Virtually every major military innovation between 1970 and 2000 was either first made in Chonburi or first adopted there. Unfortunately for them, their army was both too large and - killingly - too mechanized, and the one-two punch of a regional blockade and Aurinsula's attrition was too much for them. Once the gasoline ran out, the Aurinsulans turned them back. As the sun rises on 2015, there is no Chon military; rebuilding is too much of a priority. If they scraped together the money and the manpower, then they could theoretically be a major force - many of their superstar officers are either still at-large or in unwilling retirement.
Description of Geopolitical Role: Chonburi is a classic House of Trouble and essentially a failed state; they put every fiber of their national being against winning the war and it broke their back. It will be decades before Chonburi even has an opportunity to its former prominence. Chonburi is no longer an actor on the world stage; its destiny now is to be acted upon.
Roleplaying Example or Link (Please provide at least three paragraphs): See everything I've done as Aurinsula.
Notes and Questions: This is Aurinsula.

What made you choose Pericles? It's my baby.
Please list any active alts or puppets you may control: Aurinsula
Have you ever controlled a nation that was deleted for poor conduct: Nope.
Have you read and understood the guidelines on our OP: I ought to; I wrote them.

I have nothing at all to do right now so, I suppose I could write my own take on that one writing prompt:

Of all the World Heritage Sites on the planet, the grey-haired woman mused, this one might be the most annoying of them all.

Unlike in most of the cities she'd been sent to, there were no subway lines to be seen in Megelan; for they would've gotten in the way of the intricate web of canals that, since the 12th century at least, connected the city - and the landlocked country it was the outsized capital of - to the sea. In lieu of subway trains, there was an immense fleet of tiny boats, that swarmed to and fro throughout the bustling metropolis' veins like bugs, or insects. A hundred of them would make a meager replacement for a lone subway train, she thought, and this, even if Megelan's public transport system didn't fall victim to a strike every other week.

She must have been thinking aloud, for the old man next to her stifled a chuckle. "True, true" the man said, in an accent that could've sounded French to some, and German to others. "But they're not going to go away. For the right wingers, they're a link to that sea they feel they're entitled to; for everyone else, they're a part of the city, just as important to it as a heart is to a body: they made it prosperous, they made it rich, they made it what it is now. And well, look around you. You wouldn't be able to see all of this, under the ground".

He gestured towards the buildings and houses lined up on both sides of the canals, a heterogeneous patchwork of medieval, modern and contemporary edifices that was far more pleasing to the eye than the dull, industrial monotony of the city's outskirts. She recalled what she heard, the day before, from one of the people she interviewed, a member of the so-called "eco-nationalist movement", Only Us: "the devastation and pollution of the land both precedes and follows that of the people, and vice versa".

If they will get even just a handful of seats in the next elections, they will be trouble.

She asked the old man about his opinion of them; "I voted for the Socialists in the last elections" he said, "but they are not entirely wrong: fifty, sixty years ago... so many poor fellows came here from other countries, men and women, young and old, that they made the population of several cities swell. The city of St. John, where I come from, it is one of the biggest cities of the country now, but I remember when it was a town of thirty thousand people; I was but a child, back then".

Not much later, the woman got out the boat, and walked to her hotel, going past the smell of rice and sausages that came out of the restaurants, and the ethnically diverse sample of humanity that came out of the schools. Above the bed in her room, there was a painting; it portrayed the Castle of Jupiter's Gate, who had once been the residence of royalty, and whose museums she had visited. From her room's window, she could see the futuristic outline of the city's business district, dominated by the sleek Tower of Liberty.

A medieval castle, a modern skyscraper, and seven million people between them.

To the opposition: if you think my nation would be a better fit for the region with a few changes - I don't know, maybe there are niches in Pericles that haven't been filled yet - speak now, or forever hold your peace.

Hey der, this is Demphor. This is cannon that Defese and I have created as one of the results of several Defese-Demphorian conflicts.

Nation Name: The Kingdom of Élbannin

Form of Government: Constitutional Monarchy

National Leader(s): Duke Edward II

Population (Please remember our realism guidelines): 1,992,132 peoples (924,310 Demphorian/Elbanese peoples, 1,067,822 Defasku peoples)

Estimated GDP: PD£19,000,000 (Demphorian pounds)

Climate and Geography: Élbannin is an island nation located between Defese and Demphor, mostly rocky and hilly but possessive of prospective ports in the Julian Sea.

National History: Prior to the emergence of the Defesian dominance of Southwestern Agenor, several Gaelic city states ruled on the coastline of the Julian Sea, one of them being Élbannin. Over time, however, these city states were gradually swallowed up by the Defasku hordes.

In 1905, The Armens War begins between the Kingdom Demphor and the Kingdom of Yulia for control of the Yulian island. The Demphorians are successful, and occupy the island of Élbannin while decimating a combined fleet sent by other Defeskau nations to assist. The conflict removes all naval ability from any Defeskau nation until the 21st century. In 1929, The War of Reclamation begins between a coalition of Defeskau nations against Demphor to unite historically Defesian lands lost since the collapse of the Empire, and to take vengeance on past humiliations. By the end of 1931, the lack of naval power from the Defesian powers means that outside multiple attempted landings on Demphorian islands being quickly repelled, little gains are made. Demphorian forces are able to land on the mainland itself, and advance south before the front lines turn into a grinding trench warfare. In 1933, after years of trench warfare having grinded the front lines to a stalemate. The Defeskau Coalition has been completely exhausted and accepts a peace treaty from Demphor. The Demphorians keep their land occupied in the northern region of Defese, which eventually becomes the independent nation of Élbannin. In total, there are 550,000 deaths from the fighting. Élbannin swears loyalty to King James VI of Demphor, and as a result, the Demphorian Empire is formed.

The Second Reclamation War begins between the Kingdom of Defese, Elbannin and Demphor, despite other Defesian nations refusing to join in a new coaliiton. In the early stages of the war, the Kingdom drops an atomic bomb on a major Elbanese military base, killing 35,000 people instantly and a combined 41,000. A second bomber carrying another atomic bomb is sent further behind their lines to bomb another military target on Nordanes, their largest island. This plane is unsuccessful, being shot down over the sea. Demphor drops their own atom bomb on a large Defesian position later that month, killing 36,000 people instantly and a combined 42,000. Realizing the catastrophic consequences that would result with their continued use, both sides informally agree to cease using them. The war ends after Demphorian forces capture the Defeskau capital city of Roskov after a brutal three month seige. The resulting surrender strips the Kingdom of its sovereignity, forming the nation of Duís in its place. This new nation is ruled by a Demphorian noble family, with the former Gradysk nobility going into exile or being imprisoned. Large scale insurrections and civil unrest break out within the nation, keeping it weak and ineffectual. In total, there are 980,000 military deaths from the conflict.

United Fascist State of Defese founded in a revolution against the Duis government. It took advantage of the outrage over the failures of the Reclamation Wars and resulting rise in extreme nationalist to advance its hard line agenda. Its major projects are the complete dismantling of modern Defesian feudalism, the creation of a single Defeskau nationality, and the unification of all all former territory of the Aeynerilis Empire. In 1974, The Great Unification War breaks out when the United Fascist State of Defese launches a massive, coordinated surprise attack on Elbannin with the assistance of the other Defesian nations. Cutting huge swaths through foreign occupied territory, the USFD advance is rapid, taking advantage of better battlefield technology and discipline, with mechanized fascist forces proving extremely adapable and difficult to predict. There are 320,000 military deaths. In 1975, Defese signs a peace settlement, regaining all historically Defesian lands from Élbannin and forcing its government into exile on the island of Élbannin. Immediately following the occupation of the regained territory, the Fascist State of Defese uses it's already mobilized military to launch successful attacks on other Defesian nations, many of which have themselves descended into civil war between factions sympathetic to the fascists and traditionalists refusing to catipulate.

Description of National Economy (Major sectors, development, etc.): Major exports include angry Gaelic peoples and sheep.

Description of National Military (Please remember our realism guidelines): Élbannin has an Army made primarily of Demphorian/Gaelic people's to keep control over the Defasku populace. It currently stands at about 55,000, mostly funded by the Demphorian government.

Description of Geopolitical Role: Élbannin is a Third-rate Peer but is House of Trouble waiting to happen. With massive ethnic tensions mounting, the instability of Demphor in previous years and the beginning of a much more aggressive Defese, it's hard to say that the house of cards may collapse on itself.

Roleplaying Example or Link (Please provide at least three paragraphs): See everything I've done as Demphor.

Notes and Questions: This is Demphor.

What made you choose Pericles? Aeneas.

Please list any active alts or puppets you may control: Demphor

Have you ever controlled a nation that was deleted for poor conduct: When I was 12 years old, yes.

Nation Name:  The Aztlan Dominion

Form of Government:  Military dictatorship under absolutist autocratic monarchy; de facto totalitarian stratocracy

National Leader(s): Huetlatoani Azcalxochixiuitl  Tecoztli IV

Population (Please remember our realism guidelines): ~36,000,000

Estimated GDP: ₡990,000,000,000 or ₡27,500 per capita.

Description of National Culture: Though Aztlan is mostly secular, religion is still nearly omnipresent in daily life. The Aztec pantheon has more than thirty major deities and each have their own celebrations, though effort has been made to condense the number of holidays. Approximately seventy-nine percent of the population ostensibly subscribes to this pantheon, though less than half that number attends services. Nearly ten percent are catholic, a testament to the pernicious influence of Costa Mejis.

There is a long and terrible history of human sacrifice in Aztlan and it remained in practice less than a century ago. However, the country is trying to modernize, and that includes modernizing its religious beliefs. The nation first moved to non-fatal bloodletting, and then to the burning of blood-soaked paper strips. The steps of the great temples may no longer run red, but the occasional mutilated corpse spurs rumors that some still hold true to the old ways.

Aztlan is known for its folk art traditions, mostly derived from the indigenous and Toltec crafts. Certain artistic characteristics were repeated throughout the region, namely a preference for angular, linear patterns, and three-dimensional ceramics. Notable handicrafts include clay pottery, colorfully embroidered cotton garments, cotton or wool shawls and outer garments, and colorful baskets and rugs are seen everywhere. Aztlan is also known for its ancient architecture, especially for public, ceremonial and urban monumental buildings and structures.

The foundation of Aztlan music comes from its indigenous sounds and heritage. The original inhabitants of the land used drums (such as the teponaztli), flutes, rattles, conches as trumpets and their voices to make music and dances. This ancient music is still played in some parts of Aztlan. Folk dances are also a feature of Aztec culture. Traditional dancers are known to favor a sequence of hopping steps, heel and toe tapping movements.

Climate and Geography:  The geography of Aztlan is characterized by its six main natural regions that present their own unique characteristics, from the <name> mountain range region shared with Costa Mejis; the western Julian coastal region; the northern Julian coastal region also shared with Costa Mejis; the push interior plains; the thick rainforest region in the south; and the occupied islands of the Carminea Crater.

Aztecs customarily describe their country in terms of the climatic zones. Below 1,000 meters (3,281 ft) in elevation is the tlalixopaltic (hot land), where temperatures are above 24 °C (75.2 °F).

The majority of the population can be found in the tlalicemantoc (temperate land, between 1,001 and 2,000 meters (3,284 and 6,562 ft)), where temperatures vary between 17 and 24 °C (62.6 and 75.2 °F).

In the tlaliyancuic (cold land) mean temperatures range between 12 and 17 °C (53.6 and 62.6 °F). Beyond the tlaliyancuic lie the mountainous forested zone and then the treeless grasslands of the alpine tundra. Above 4,000 meters (13,123 ft), where temperatures are below freezing, is the tlalicetl (frozen land), a zone of permanent snow and ice.

National History: The earliest recorded histories suggest that the Aztecs were a semi-nomadic people that first migrated out from the interior of the continent to the coastline of what is present-day Aztlan and Costa Mejis sometime during the sixth century. A crude and simple people, the Aztecs were practically barbarians when they encountered their first taste of civilization. Spread through what is now western Costa Mejis and eastern Aztlan were the six city-states of the Toltec kingdom. It was from the Toltecs that the Aztecs learned the three A's of civilization: agriculture, art, and architecture. In the Nahuatl language the word "Tōltēcatl" (singular) or "Tōltēcah" (plural) came to take on the meaning "artisan".

The Aztecs moved on, continuing west until they could travel west no farther. When the Aztecs returned to the area in roughly 1248, the Toltecs were long gone, with only their crumbling ruins to show they had been there at all.  The later Aztec culture saw the Toltecs as their intellectual and cultural predecessors and described Toltec culture as the epitome of civilization.

More to come later. Further collaboration required.

Description of National Economy (Major sectors, development, etc.):  Major sectors of the economy would be mining, agriculture (especially cacao), logging, exotic animals (both hunting and as pets), and tourism. The nation is trying to develope more advanced industries such as telecommunications, and modernizing its armaments industry, but in some cases it is putting the cart before the horse, such as its disastrous space program (an endeavor unmarred by success!).

Description of National Military (Please remember our realism guidelines):  Numbering roughly 720,000 in strength, the military essentially runs the country at the behest of the Huetlatoani. Aztlan is divided into seven military cantons, each canton, or altepetl, is controlled by a Tlacochcalcatl, the highest military rank, and answerable only to the Huetlatoani.

Description of Geopolitical Role:  Will depend on who my other neighbors and up being, but it is mostly a (bad) attempt to oppose and/it counterbalance Costa Mejis, who has earned eternal (or interminable) enmity for its historical defeat, occupation, and subjugation of a sizeable amount of Aztecs and their land.

Roleplaying Example or Link (Please provide at least three paragraphs):

Notes and Questions:

What made you choose Pericles? This was one of the first results when doing a keyword search for "realism". Those individuals I met on the IRC seemed pretty cool, as well.

Nation Name: The Alcasian Republic | La Répbublique Alcasienne

Form of Government: Unitary Presidential Constitutional Republic; gov't participation based on ideals of Meritocratic Technocracy

National Leader(s): [President] Angèle Lefévre, [Prime Minister] Pierre Jean-Baptiste, [Chief Foreign Affairs Minister] Jean-Marc Fabius

Population (Please remember our realism guidelines): 65.766.300

Estimated GDP: $1.952.965.800.000 N$D [~$29.695,54/capita]

Description of National Culture:
The national culture of Alcase is most similar to contemporary French, which a similar societal historical roller coaster which was experienced by the French throughout their own history.

For the above reason, the people of Alcase - especially those whom inhabit the capital city - are considered to be very condescending and believe themselves the pinnacle of human civilization. Due to their revolutionary and politically unstable history revolving around decreasing government and ecclesiastical power, the Alcasiens are very liberal and hold high regard for progressives in the government. In general, the government tends to favor laissez-faire but holds a priority of placing the environment before industrial bolstering following the "Green Revolution" of the 1970s.

After the revolutionary wars which spread revolutionary republican ideas beyond the Alcasian borders, the Alcasien aristocracy and upper class believe in a "civic duty" to actively participate and prioritize national policies in their government [leading to them codifying meritocratic technocracy] while the middle and lower class favor clan-based prioritization.

Despite their liberal viewpoint, the majority of Alcasien natives are devoutly monotheistic, regarding their church as "the one true House among many." This long-established belief has led to the secularization of the government following the fall of the ancien regime. Many cathedrals, built around 1100 AD through 1600 AD, dot the nation's landscape and are considered beautiful architectural sights which function primarily as houses of worships and secondarily as popular (religious pilgrimage) tourist attractions.

Climate and Geography:
The Alcasian climate is a varied one. The northwest and western mass of the nation is most similar to Atlantic-Oceanic, with forests dotting the landscape mostly along the north. The southwest land consisting of Isthmuses is a very swampy, jungle-comprised landmass with a very rainy climate. The east is a very Alpline-like climate; snowy, cold, and harsh. The southern cities experience a warm mediterranean climate year-long.

The Alcasian geography, similar to its climate, is also a varied one. On the eastern border of the nation, a tall, lengthy mountain chain dots the countryside while two contrasting seas line the national coastlines on its northern and southern borders. On its western axis, the nation has many forests which lead to isthmus-type land-bridges leading to what is considered the "Saharan Sea of Gold and Saracen." Much of Alcase's northwestern coastline is a constituent of a large bay while the western "Isthmes-Ouest" encircle an extremely large lake, titled "Vin-Mer" [pronounced: Vuh-Meh].

The mountains to the east have led to Alcasien people to be sociologically isolated from the eastern peoples of Minea, despite having its land on the ambiguous Carpathian-Minean border.

National History:
Archaeologist date Alcase's inhabitance by humans hundreds of thousands of years, but evidence of agricultural settlements appear to have popped up around 3000-2500 BCE. The Gaullic people have historically been set up in city-states that dotted modern-day Eastern Carpathia ca. 400 BCE through 200s BCE, when many of the city states, although banded together to fight a common foe, were ultimately conquered and incorporated into what was named "L'Empire Gaulle," or The Gallic Empire.

Following the Gallic Empire's collapse in 361 CE, Alcasien aristocrats and warlords fought for power, in what was dubbed "The Warring Collapse." In 391 CE, exactly 30 years after the fall of the Lloran Empire, an exceptionally powerful and charismatic chief rose to power and named himself "Re de acaçe," which was derived from eastern bastardizations for the Gallic words Rex for King, and de glacies for of the Ice [Mountains]. Through the evolution of the Alcasien language [modern-day French], the name for the nation-state has evolved into L'Alcase.

The rest of Alcasian history are typically divided into several eras, each with a particularly radical change in its sociopolitical atmosphere: The Fragmented Era, The Ancien Regime (or Consolidation Era/Absolutist Era), The Enlightenment (Enlightened Era), The Revolution (Republican Era), The Restoration, The Second Republic, The Belle Époque, and culminating into the Modern and Post-Modern eras, when historians began tiring of naming the eras of Alcasian history. The sociopolitical atmospheres were ultimately altered by the most prominent wars of the particular periods and were often characterized by the literature and art drafted during their respective years.

The history of Alcase follows a very similar timeline of modern-day France's, so the Eras are pretty self-explanatory to those knowledgeable of European - and more specifically, French - history.

Description of National Economy (Major sectors, development, etc.):
The government maintain a relatively laissez-faire policy towards economic policy, and have thus implemented very minuscule business taxes, but ensuring labor fairness through Antitrust and Labor laws passed primarily during the early 1900s. This has allowed businesses to flourish and even attracts foreign business to headquarter in the capital city of Alcase.

The economy is well developed, well diversified, and rich one. Many pride themselves in being highly skilled factors of labor by specializing early on (often in secondary school) and going off to state-subsidized colleges. The major constituents of the national economy are the iron mining industry (most prominent in the eastern mountainsides), agricultural sector (most prominent in the Atlantic-Oceanic climates), exotic woods/animals (in the jungles of the West), the nuclear energy industry, and the aerospace industry (headquartered mostly in the capital city).

Alcasiens pride themselves in being expert mechanical, aerospace and nuclear engineers and many city-dwellers resort to manufacturing/service-sector positions for their jobs. Tourism and wine exports are also very popular economic pieces of Alcase.

Description of National Military (Please remember our realism guidelines):
The Alcasian Armed Forces are a very humble military force. The total active force numbers roughly 182750 [+85,358 Gendarme], which are divided among the Naval Force, Air Force, and Ground Force, and Gendarme - or National Police Force. The military is officially a highly-trained, well-equipped, yet small professional force consisting of strictly volunteers following the abolishment of conscription a few decades prior to the 21st century.

The main service rifle of the Armed Forces is the FAMAS-F1 and the military is officially headed by the President of the Republic. The Naval Force possesses only a single aircraft carrier and is largely incapable of projecting realistic military force beyond the borders of Alcase. The military overall is well versed in jungle, mountain, and forest warfare but lacks the knowledge of desert warfare due to the lack of deserts within the Alcasian borders.

Description of Geopolitical Role:
While historically the Alcasians have been relatively jingoistic due to their rivalry with their northern neighbors, contemporary Alcasians hold a largely pacifistic standing in world affairs. The leaders of Alcase advocate for international cooperation in resolving issues and have asked foreign nations to come together and form a political/economic union in order to encourage much more stable and much broader international trade.

Due to its small military size, Alcase has little use of foreign installations but would allow friendly nations to station defensive troops within its borders.

Roleplaying Example or Link (Please provide at least three paragraphs):
1250 RP as OP
I will happily furnish more links if requested.

Notes and Questions: None as of yet. EDIT: This (light purple between Carpathia and Minea) is the territory I am more or less hoping for.

What made you choose Pericles? It's young age and potential, looks savory tbh. Also, the non-Earth landmass adds uniqueness.
Please list any active alts or puppets you may control: Leauice, which I may actually place in this region instead of Alcase

Let's take this one by one.

Regarding Elbannin, I'm sure most of us are familiar with Demph and his abilities as a writer, and I have no major objections. I do have a question regarding Andallion; now that the nation has ceased to exist, does Demph plan to completely retcon its existence? This app seems to have somehow slipped through the cracks; I understand if Demph does not wish to revisit the subject.

I think Aztlan is the first Aztec-themed nation we've had apply? I've already had the opportunity to speak with the player behind Aztlan on the IRC, and I am for the most part satisfied with their application. I'm not sure, though, about the sprinkling of RL references I've seen - I don't speak for the rest of the region, but I'd prefer you replace those with in-universe terms. There is also the question of activity - we have had too many applicants be accepted and lapse into inactivity almost immediately. Given your low number of posts and recent founding date, you will appreciate that this is a valid concern. Can you guarantee that you will remain active with Aztlan for the foreseeable future?

Alcase, you have a solid application, and I can see no major problems with it. I do have a couple of questions - are you able to maintain significant activity? And two, the territory that you propose to occupy is far too large - would you be willing to make the appropriate revisions such that Alcasien territory is of an acceptable size?

As for roleplaying samples, I would like both Aztlan and Alcase to take the following writing prompts and come up with a sample of acceptable quality. There are no restrictions on either time or length; simply post whatever you feel best fulfills the prompt's requirements at your leisure. Please also take note that whatever you write will not be considered canon unless you wish it to be so - you may take whatever liberties you need to craft a compelling piece of writing, with the single proviso that the piece must take place in a realistic, modern tech setting. Alcase, you are certainly free to post additional links to samples - these will likely also be taken into consideration.

Aztlan

For centuries, your country has been racially and religiously divided - and this has contributed to many scuffles and conflicts in the past. Ethnic and religious tensions have always been high, simmering under the facade of an uneasy peace. As the leader of your country, you have gamely sought to eradicate this problem in the past, but to no avail.

Now, however, there are thunderclouds on the horizon. Adherents of a minority religion in your lands have allegedly desecrated a holy place of worship of the majority religion, and this has resulted in a breakout of violent incidents throughout the country. If the government does not intervene, your country might well descend into the bloodiest conflict in its history in a matter of days.

Alcase

Your country has always had a proud tradition in the arts and humanities. You, a prospective college (or equivalent) student, have been fascinated with the same ever since your childhood, and you hope to eventually pursue a qualification in a suitable field. However, your parents have other ideas. Both pragmatists, they believe that a career in the sciences would likely be more beneficial in terms of future employment, and to that end they have alternately tried to coax and threaten you in the hopes that you will bend to their will.

You are resolved to rebuff their attempts to persuade you and enroll in a college or university that will allow you to pursue your dream qualification, come what may. However, only days before you are slated to attend your first day of college/university, something that compels you to give serious thought to changing your mind happens.

If either of you have any further questions, please feel free to either telegram me (or any other member of our region), or hop onto our IRC.

Depending on your interpretation of acceptable, I should be able to maintain an acceptable presence in the region. And I am willing to lower my border's extent, but I request that some of the mountains in the east remain in my territory.

The prompt I will be glad to furnish, however, I'm currently in the process of writing my research paper and presentation for my class, so that'll probably take a while.

Postby Ronaar » Mon Nov 23, 2015 12:08 pm

Nation Name: The Armed Republic of Ronaar
Form of Government: Representative Democracy
National Leader(s): High Chief Lucas Ezekial, the Council
Population (Please remember our realism guidelines): 4.8 Million
Estimated GDP: 53.2 Billion
Description of National Culture: The culture of Ronaar is somewhat of a unique mix of Swiss and the American South, particularly Appalachia. Hunting and Archery play a huge role in the culture of Ronaar. They are generally cautious about outsiders, but treat all visitors with respect.
Climate and Geography: Mostly forests and mountains, which has led Ronaar to be fairly isolated. The fact that it's on an island doesn't help. The island lies in the Austerian Ocean.
National History: Ronaar was once simply a cluster of tribes living in the same area. They were discovered by an imperial nation and made a colony. They remained such for about seventy-five years before the natives and sympathizers fought together to rid the island nation of the colonizers and founding their own nation. Their isolation has caused them to develop a Swiss-like stance of neutrality in most wars. The few wars they have taken part in have usually seen them in either a supporting role or a role as assassins.
Description of National Economy (Major sectors, development, etc.): The major industries of Ronaar are the Hunting and Tourism industries. Most is in the private sector, with a few government run industries thrown in the mix. They are slowly developing their economy, but they view preserving nature and taking care of each other as more important overall.
Description of National Military (Please remember our realism guidelines): They have a relatively small military, though they do have a mandatory draft that all citizens sign-up for when they turn 17. Overall, the Ronaar military can be considered different. Guerrilla tactics are the preferred method of battle, with archers being the preferred soldiers (this stems from a long history of archery deeply ingrained in the culture of Ronaar). This is part of the reason they have adopted the stance of neutrality in most wars. Of course, they do have modern weaponry, but generally only use it when the draft is enacted. Ronaar prefers to look for peaceful solutions.
Description of Geopolitical Role: Ronaar's Swiss-like stance of neutrality has led to it becoming one of the best mediators around. They try to help others come to peaceful terms, and declare neutrality in virtually all conflicts. Their isolation helps them maintain this neutrality.
Roleplaying Example or Link (Please provide at least three paragraphs): The High Chief on a hunting expedition:

Lucas Ezekial walked quietly through the forest, taking in the crisp cold air of the morning. He had left his second-in-command in charge as he took a week's vacation to clear his mind. Lucas had recently been asked to take part in a war involving neighboring Kirisaki, and needed time before making his decision on whether to bring it before the Council or not. The High Chief had the power to issue an Executive Order to mobilize the troops, but only for 90 days. If the Council approved, then they could be mobilized for as long as necessary. Lucas wasn't sure if they should even get involved in this war, though. It wouldn't help Ronaar, and would likely harm their reputation for neutrality.

Lucas sighed, taking a deep breath. Looking around, Lucas heard a soft rustling in the nearby brush. He crouched down behind a tree and drew an arrow. Taking aim with his bow, he searched the brush, watching and waiting. His mind drifted to another possible course of action. The High Chief had the ability to send in one of the three elite forces of the Ronaar military, the Green Arrows, Red Arrows and Dark Archers. The Dark Archers were certainly the best assassins, and he could possibly send this elite squad in to end the war from the inside. Drawing his bowstring, the thought left his mind for the moment. He watched as a rather large rabbit jumped out of the brush, hopping through the woods.

Whoosh!

The arrow flew from his bow, burying itself deep into the rabbit's neck. Lucas walked over, gave thanks to the Gods and retrieved his arrow. Taking the rabbit back to his camp, he started up a fire and began the process of cooking the creature. As he skinned the rabbit, he thought back to his time as a Dark Archer. Lucas' military experience was what helped get him elected, though he wasn't sure why. The Dark Archers were the most notorious of the Ronaar military, the assassins of the three elite forces. Lucas recalled the first time he went out with the squad on a mission. The memory of his arrow burying deep into the chest of the general still made him shudder.

Notes and Questions: I am hoping for one of the larger islands just off of Kirisaki.

What made you choose Pericles? The small size, lack of offsite forum and the interest in roleplay drew me to it.

That's excellent, Alcase; I look forward to reading your piece. There's no hurry at all, so please do take your time writing it. Regarding your claim, I think that's something you will have to discuss with our cartographer, but I don't foresee there being any problems getting you your mountains.

As for Ronaar's application - given the recent founding date, the primary concern is as always regarding activity. Can you offer us any sort of reassurance that you intend to participate actively within the region? In any event, I think you should participate in a thread with one of us, just to ascertain your commitment, before we make a decision either way on your application.
The artist known as Kyrin Knightsbridge; everybody's favourite blend of acidic, astringent sarcasm.

NS is always open in a tab for me, unless I'm at work. Any thread you wish me to participate in, I'll happily join in.
