Carpathia, the peninsula thing around Mediterrania. As far as I understand Carpathia is the Pericles-equivalent continent of Africa, and I've based the geography and mineral resources of Akashi on that, so it makes the most sense to be placed there.

Nation Name: The Empire of Itelviqq
Form of Government: Absolute monarchy
National Leader(s): Emperor Oqlashi III
Population (Please remember our realism guidelines): 4,918,186
Estimated GDP: $2.002 billion (N$D)
Description of National Culture: The Itelviqq are a reclusive people. They are very set in their beliefs, with compromise being frowned upon, leading to the numerous civil wars throughout their history. They are also very traditionalist, not allowing many more progressive ideas to pass; arranged marriages are still common. The food is fairly uniform, with not many choices in a tundra archipelago.
Climate and Geography: Itelviqq is made up of over 2,000 islands, ranging from several hundred kilometres in size to only a few metres. The coasts are rocky and often made up of cliffs, with most exceptions being used for cities. The temperature is fairly standard throughout the year, rarely changing from the standard 0 degrees to 5 degrees Celsius.
National History: Itelviqq was only inhabited in about 1700, by Itelvians prosecuted in their previous home. With the exception of the first government, which was a democracy and only lasted a few months, Itelviqq has always been an absolute monarchy. The monarch changed much throughout history, as nobles wrestled for power. Itelviqq's history is riddled with civil wars; only about 41 years were without one, and there are currently several unrelated ones.
Description of National Economy (Major sectors, development, etc.): Itelviqq's economy is impotent and irrelevant in the international scene for the most part; however, it is one of the most popular places for ship registration, however, and its status of a flag of convenience is what makes sure the economy doesn't collapse.
Description of National Military (Please remember our realism guidelines): Itelviqq's military is puny. It is underfunded, underequipped, and normally splintered between whichever factions are fighting a civil war. It has about 180,000 people in total, although each warring faction controls a different portion of them.
Description of Geopolitical Role: Think Syria, but colder.
Roleplaying Example or Link (Please provide at least three paragraphs): Alright, finished the story. Here it be:
The sun glared down upon Harrison’s head, doing nothing to help the 100 degree temperatures. Ever since both Bajas had been incorporated into California, the capital of the state had been moved to the more centralised location of San Diego.

“Might as well’ve stayed up in Sacramento,” he grumbled to himself, unaccustomed to the ever present heat.

“And just what are you implying about my city, Mr. Harrison?” asked Michael Wells, who had just joined Harrison on his walk to the Hotel Del Coronado. He was a San Diego native, and known for his loyalty to his city.

“You know damn well what I’m implying,” Harrison replied. After a momentary standoff, both men grinned.

“Haven’t seen you in years, mate,” Wells said. “How’s Del Norte been treating you?”

“Better than this city, at least weather-wise.” Harrison chuckled.

“Yeah, figures they’d pick the hottest week of the year to do this.” The men were silent for a few moments.

“How’s it come this far, Harrison?” Wells asked. “When I was younger, there was no city drownings, or multi-billion dollar levee projects, or decades-long Congresses and presidential tenures, or deploying troops to kill our own people…”

“You thought your time was calm?” Harrison chuckled again, this time more grimly. “I remember a time before the Novorossiyan crisis, or the Migrant crisis, or Hurricane Marco. And then there was the time of my father, before even 9/11.” Harrison felt the sting of a man far past his prime, knowing death was just around the corner.

They spent the rest of the walk in silence.

The conference room was ill fitted for the gravity of the representatives’ situation. The wood ceilings and white tablecloths washed in a warm light, the room was one of the few places he had seen that was reminiscent of the less chaotic, yet no less tense, time of the late Cold War. Altogether, it was more fitting for a convention or a wedding reception, but a technically illegal organisation had to take what it could. Harrison took his seat near the podium and projection screen. As the rest of the representatives filed in, he occasionally made passing small talk, but otherwise remained silent.

Occasionally, a passing representative would give Harrison a pitying look, before continuing on. Harrison had seen this glance innumerable times, and had come to detest it. The look said he was an old, old man, and one to be pitied. His permanently depressed expression, a relic of the effect his time stationed in Donetsk had had on him, did little to help his case.

After what seemed like only a few minutes, Governor Martinez entered the room, his face looking about as dejected as the representatives. He was flanked on either side by members of the California Revolutionary Guard. Only a few years younger than Harrison, yet appearing decades younger, he advanced to the podium. “This emergency meeting of the Californian Parliament shall come to order,” he said, his firm voice easily reaching the other side of the conference room.

After the representatives had seated, Martinez continued. “I know I’m breaking parliamentary procedure, but as stated, this is an emergency meeting. Thus, roll call, the agenda, approval of minutes, and other such niceties have been abandoned. For our safety, we must come to a vote immediately.” He slowly hung his head, a tear dripping down onto the podium. Correction, Harrison thought, He seems far more dejected than we do.

Martinez raised his head, attempting to appear calm. “The representative of Alameda County, himself representing a coalition of thirty-two other counties, has requested to speak.”

The Alamedan representative stood up from his seat. The boy appeared to be in his early twenties, and by his gaunt features and shaking hands, appeared to be afraid of his own proposal. “I-I, representing the Coalition of the Thirty-Two, move that the State of California declare independence from the United Republic of North America.” He sighed, slumping back down in his chair.

“Would anyone like to second this motion?”

Several hands rose up in the air, each less certain than the last.

“Motion seconded. Do any representatives request discussion?”

Silence.

“Apologies for skipping procedure, but let’s get to the point - all in favour of this motion?”

Slowly, deliberately, nearly everyone’s hand rose.

“All opposed?”

A single hand began rising, before its owner realised the unpopularity of his opinion, and quickly lowered.

“We’ve come to an agreement, then,” Martinez said. “We shall meet at a later date to decide the intricacies of our new nation. For now, however, this meeting is adjou-”

He became sharply silent as the doors to the conference room were kicked down.

The next few seconds were a flurry of motion, yelling, and gunshots, as clad in all black systematically killed every delegate in the room. Harrison, utterly horrified, jumped under the table in desperation.

When he heard vases and glasses being smashed as the soldiers flipped tables, he knew death had found him. Unfortunately for it, however, this understanding that his time had come gave him a newfound resilience.

When his table was flipped out from above him, he looked the soldier right in the eyes. When he seemed to show remorse for killing an old man, Harrison smiled grimly, then spit in his face.

The soldier lifted his handgun, and all was replaced with oblivion.

Alright, I was unaware of this. I'll null my post until our map situation is difinitive.

Also as per Kvens nation. I'll be abstaining from that vote. I feel my past dealing with him would make my vote to subjective in favor of his entry. Nothing against you bruh it's an integrity thing is all.

Thats what I was lead to understand, as well.

E: If we don't redo that map, I wouldn't mind being on that spot on Carpathia across from Lanos. Thats very similar to the situation I was in in Terra Firma with the Straits I was looking for. Even if I don't control it, per se, some of that water would be mine, and this it would be lucrative to allow passage through it, and, failing that, because of that waterways economic importance, would allow me to continue the economic plans I've developed.

EE: I see that Christianity is prevalent on Carpathia , which is good because I intend to be Catholic. Whats the culture like? Any chance for my Latin-Americans to be there?

We've tried to avoid tying specific real-world cultures to specific places; this is how, in the old days, we had Andallia and Lyncanestria (two European-style countries) on the west coast of Carpathia, Nasiristan and Mediterranea (two Middle-Eastern style countries) on the south coast, and Nambutu (an African-style country) on the east. Of all the continents, Carpathia is the one that's the most grab-bag, and most things aren't out-of-place there.

All I insist on is the grain cultures.

Which would be why I asked about the cultures already present on Carpathia.

E: Mostly, I'd like to know about my potential neighbors. Of curse, this is moot if we redo the map. :P

I like most of the applicants, with the exception of Quantalis: that application needs fleshed out, as was mentioned on the RMB, with an RP sample.

Your estimated GDP for a nation of your population size is very very high. With these stats, your GDP/c would be approximately 407,060. Would you mind adjusting stats a bit? :)

EDIT: I'm not certain if you mean 2002 Billion or 2.002 Billion. If the latter case is true, then your GDP/c is actually very small. I'm not sure if that's by design.

I'd assume he does mean 2.002 billion which I think would make sense since this nations meant to be imbroiled in internal turmoil.

Volksrepublik Demokratische Holzweisch
"Auferstanden aus Ruinen!"[/align]

Nation Name: Volksrepublik Demokratische Holzweisch

Form of Government: Single-Party Socialist Utopia State

National Leader(s): Bernhard Künstler, Chairman of the Holzweisch Worker's Party

Population (Please remember our realism guidelines): 165,000,000

Estimated GDP: 2.3595 trillion [14,300 per capita]

Description of National Culture:

"Oh Holzweisen, land of plenty! Oh how your great amber seas of grain ripple in the soft, gentle breeze of our historic land! How we adore you, our fatherland, land of plenty, of fairness, of equality! When the jealous world of material capitalism seeks to demolish our model utopia, when the bared jaws of corporate greed and hatred seek to destroy our gentle worker's paradise, we, the workers of Holzweisen, must stand firm and devout in our adoration of the fatherland. The world has long been plagued by greed and injustice, but we, the Holzweisen, will stand firm in our commitment to defy the world and ensure socialist utopia for all working-class men and women of all nations and creeds!"

--Johann Werfel, The Holzweisch Worker's Pamphlet

Holzweisen is a nation that can only be discussed through the lenses of falsehood and truth simultaneously. For many, the gargantuan socialist nation is a worker's paradise; working hours are fair, decently paying and offer the worker plenty of time during which he can raise his children, enjoy a home-cooked meal from his wife, and head off to the pub at night. Each and every worker has a democratic say in the operations of the industrial firm in which he is employed [all state-owned and nationalized industries have since been transformed into vibrant, enthusiastic worker's cooperatives] and he has, above all else, a strong sense of community, pride in his work, and security. Even the most impoverished do not go without a roof over their heads, a warm meal in their bellies and a sense of hope for the future.

At the same time, one must remember that Holzweisen is, for all intents and purposes, a single-party dictatorship. Man might be free from want and brutish poverty, but only at the expense of his freedom. In every corner lies an agent of the Stasi with suspicious eyes, ready to punish any deviancy or wrong-doing. Man is compelled to devote at minimum six months of his life in the national service, his own desires notwithstanding, and women are dissuaded from embarking on any path save that of noble motherhood and child-bearing, though discrimination on grounds of sex is banned de jure. Ethnic minorities, despite the governments' best attempts to be tolerant, also face severe discrimination.

Additionally, the socialist system has restricted economic freedom. Few are, for example, wealthy enough to purchase a foreign car [most use public transit or drive a German car, dibs on Audi!!! :3], and for those who wish to, there is a veritable mountain of red-tape that one must surmount. Supermarkets are rarely fully stocked, though they aren't so bad as those in cuba and russia [the shelves are usually somewhat stocked, but with limited choice in brands, and often with certain popular products out of stock at all times.]

Holzweisen is a land rich in folk-lore, cuisine and tradition. Holzweisen is culturally German. Football is a popular Holzweisch sport, as are hockey [in the northern provinces], boxing and rugby. Holzweisch contributions to classical opera, orchestral music, literature and philosophy are significant and the Holzweisch people are deeply proud of their cultural and scientific achievements. Holzweisch military tradition and patriotism are also major pilars of Holzweisch society and politics, and national service is regarded as an honorable obligation for all young men to fulfill.

Climate and Geography:

"Oh, Comrades! Have you never taken a leisurely walk along the Traun or Drava rivers, and marveled in the great beauty of our native fatherland? Let me tell you that when Gott was shaping the earth, he had with him several clots of dirt with which he fashioned and shaped the many nations of men. But when it came to fill in the lands of Holzweisen, God had no more clay with him, and he was forced to fashion our fatherland from the soils of heaven itself. And so our nation is amongst the most beautiful in the known world!"

--Christof Spanner, The Holzweisch Atlas

Holzweisen has a temperate climate with a circumboreal florist culture. Several beautiful, slowly running rivers run through the nation, feeding large swathes of farm-able land and proud forests. They generally originate in the Haubenhof mountain ranges and feed into the southern seas. Holzweisen is a geographically large nation, with majestic, empty forests comprising much of Holzweisen's unpopulated area. Holzweisen, despite its size, has few ports connecting to the greater bodies of Periclean waters. It is, then, semi-landlocked.

Holzweisen has a diverse fauna and flora, with species ranging from Red Deer, to Grey Seals, to wood mice, to the unique Waschbär which happens to the the national animal. Native flowers include the Edelweiβ, the Enzian [Gentian Blossom], the Alpenrose [Alpine Rose], and the Aurikel [Auricula]. The Holzweisch people have a deep and profound love of nature, with Holzweisch mountains and forests both being sources of artistic inspiration and nationalist sentiment.

National History:

[OOC: To be completely honest, I'm hesitant to compile a history without knowing who my immediate neighbors, rivals, etc. will be. As such, I'll give an extremely basic, skeleton history without any specific details. This isn't due to laziness [okay, partially it is] but because I think a good history relates to interactions with other nations]

Holzweizen likely had a socialist revolution around the 1930s, embarked on a series of ambitious, aggressive military campaigns to reunite the German peoples and spread the socialist creed. This partially explains the presence of Nordic and Slavic nationalities in Holzweisen; they were "liberated" by the Volksarmee Holzweisch. Innovative technology, superior organization of industrial resources and superior esprit du-corps and leadership made the Holzweisch Heer enormously successful. The Holzweisch Wehrmacht was able to project force continentally, though the Kriegsmarine was always force to divert its limited resources to submarine warfare.

Holzweisen probably got locked in a stalemate/arms buildup with an equally large/powerful nation in a microcosm of a cold war situation, with small border skirmishes and proxy wars amongst smaller neighbors breaking out. The sheer expense of such buildup, frustration with increasing conscription terms and the democratization of Holzweisen all contributed to the downsizing of this army into a more professional military force with six months of military service designed to condition and indoctrinate a new generation Holzweisch socialist citizens from the youth.

Holzweisen is still a brutal totalitarian dictatorship, but it has seen gradual liberalization and the increasing of basic freedoms. Holzweisch youth now, for example, listen to foreign pop music, have access to foreign media [censored as it is] and are free to access anything save other political and economic ideologies and ideals. The Holzweisch people are also transitioning from the Holzweisch National Internet to the World Wide Web, and are increasingly see exemptions from mandatory service, though the overweight and overtly zealously rebellious are still brought into the fold to ensure they are shaped into model citizens.

Description of National Economy (Major sectors, development, etc.):

communist

Description of National Military (Please remember our realism guidelines):

"Comrades, will you not devote your lives to the perpetuation of socialism in this world? Will you not selflessly put your life on the line, not for material wealth or carnal desire, but for a cause greater than yourself, greater than anything in this world? You are the first generation in what is to become a great global revolution! A revolution in which the old systems of oligarchy, patriarchy and racism shall be overthrown and undermined by legions of proud, Aryan, socialist heroes marching forward in the ways of glory and honor!

Comrades, think not then, with your brain but your heart! Let your heart tell you what is the just, righteous thing to do! For the oppressed child laborer in Lanos, for the struggling poverty-stricken mother in Defese, for those proles living in deplorable conditions in the capitalist world! For those wailing in sheer anguish and grief under the yoke of oppression! You, only you, have the power and duty to rescue them from their shackles! Comrades, think with your heart! Comrades, let us march forward as an army of justice!"

--Michael Kleinfeld, Address to the Volksversammlung 1954

The Volksarmee Holzweisch is a powerful military force. Equipped with excellent equipment [largely German, American, and of my own design], staffed largely by highly motivated professional soldiers and officered by a cadre of semi-aristocratic career officers, the sheer size, innovative nature, and of low-level emphasis on personal initiative offers the Volksarmee Holzweisch a dynamic, aggressive approach to warfare. A massive pool of reservists and seas of antiquated [but very much operational and usable equipment] ensure that Holzweisch can defend herself in case of foreign intervention, and the Holzweisch are, generally speaking, able to hold their ground in any ground conflict.

That being said, Holzweisen's military is far from perfect. For one thing, the Kriegsmarine has always been limited in funding, power, and scope. Recent attempts to build a stronger, blue water navy have been slow and awkward at best, and the navy only operates a pair of out-dated carriers, one of which is currently in a state of disrepair. Holzwiesen's power projection, navally, is dismal. The Kriegsmarine has remedied this somewhat by the development of an excellent submarine program, naval mines, ground based aircraft and coastal artillery [shore based anti-ship missile], but the fatherland has problems in engaging in carrier-based naval warfare.

All Holzweisch men are obligated to serve a six month service term not necessarily out of need for manpower but for indoctrination and physical conditioning reasons. The idea is that a physically fit worker is one who requires fewer dedicated medical resources, and the ability to spoon-feed national ideals about socialism and international relations to every able-bodied male has always been a capability that the state has defended jealously. In theory, all Holzweisch men are required to maintain readiness levels of fitness until the age of forty, creating a massive pool of reservists and reserve soldiers. Service is seen as an honorable, national obligation, and career soldiers are looked on with admiration.

Description of Geopolitical Role:

Holzweisen will be a large, militant, revolutionary state hell-bent on exporting its ideology overseas. The nation doesn't always act in its immediate geopolitical interests, often viewing geopolitical happenings from an ideological scope of understanding. Thus, Holzweisen Worker's Party has officially rejected realpolitik though many of the nation's actions are naturally motivated out of self-gain and need for strategic influence. Constant military deployments have taken their toll on civilian life and economic operations, however.

Holzweisen will likely support left-wing, socialist or semi-socialist parties, terrorist organizations and stands in opposition to capitalist nations, monarchies and any nation that has or has ever had a monarchy and doesn't actively condemn it. Holzweisen also has a robust international volunteer engineering and medical organization known as the Sozialistische Internationale Bruderschaft, or international socialist brotherhood, which actively works to offer aid [and propaganda] to developing regions of third-world nations. This is hoped to help ferment the seeds of socialist revolution in affected areas.

Holzweisen would also have nuclear weapons, though be actively in the process of disarming them. It intends to keep enough, however, to act as reasonable deterrent against any employment of a first-strike by any other nation.

I would love to see Holzwiesen included in the region. I think he would mesh very well as my neighbor, and we could integrate into each other's canons rather well.

Apologies for the delay, but after a few beginnings, a few scrappings, much of the work that comes with moving, procrastination, and a furious attempt to get it done, I have finished the story, and added it to the application. Also, on seeing Xata's application, I realise how ugly mine is. I apologise for that too, I had invented almost all of that canon the day I wrote that app. :S
