School in your Nation

Postby The Tricolour » Mon Aug 24, 2015 3:45 pm

Now that school season is in full swing in real life, tell us about school in your nation.

Has it started yet? If not, is there school? What do your kids learn in school? Just to name a few ideas.

In the Flecatyan Empire, there are three schools operating 365 days a year. The first is the Military Academy. Almost all men and few women serve in the Flecatyan military, staying at the Academy until age 16. Next is the Industrial Academy. Some are taught economics, while others are taught how to operate the diesel-powered machines, residing at the Academy until age 13. The final is the Research Academy, reserved for the rich and socially elite, staying for a minimum of 18 years at the Academy.

The school year in Equestria hasn't started yet. We're an agrarian nation, so schools don't open until the harvest season starts to wind down and the colts and fillies are no longer needed as field hands. In a few weeks though, classes will begin.

Equestrian schools are typically "one-room schoolhouse" affairs, much like those from early 19th Century Earth. There are no separate classes for different grades; each student is given their own course of study to work through as well as class projects to participate in. The curriculum is mostly basic--reading, writing, mathematics, history, science and nature. In addition, Pegasi and Unicorns have special schools for their unique pursuits: flight camps for the former, magic academies for the latter.

Schools in Auzkhia, while differing from state to state, in general are specialized. Everyone goes through Kindergarten (Pre-school) and Grundschule (Primary school), there are three secondary schools. Gymnasium (Academic university preparatory school), Realschule (High school for skilled professions) and Hauptschule or Gesamtschule for average basic education (associated with unskilled low class).

There are a lot of variations, you could finish your school at 16 or 17, then have a job or work as an apprentice. 18 is the age for university, since there is an exam to get your academic diploma, for Gymnasium students, it is required to graduate and then move to study at a University.

We have summer holiday for most schools, as is traditional, school generally starts in September or August and there is no school on Sundays and Holidays (though Saturdays are short days, but some schools may not meet on Saturdays). Students go home or to cafés for lunch on long mid-day breaks. There are short breaks in the morning too. Schedules can differ.

Our school starts on September. Vacation just started last May for the lower grades, and July for the higher grades.

In Tolmakia, education is separated into preschool, primary school, secondary school, and higher education. While this is the national education system, schools have their own rules and thus may not have uniforms. The latter years of higher education are accompanied with the first months of compulsory military training.

It hasn't started yet, since a 1-year period for all children is required in law to ease them out of school at the beginning of the 1 year time, and push them back up real fast at the end, to "catch them off guard," so to speak.
School is divided into "knowledge levels," based on what they know, rather than their age. So, a KL1 is equal to a preschooler. KL15 is college. KL0 is reserved for the disabled, or "psychologically hindered."
KL1-5 is elementary. KL6-10 is "academically-upgraded elementary." KL11-13 is "upgraded elementary, level 2." Any KL above is college.

School in Isla Gazebó starts from the first Monday of September and ends on the last Friday in June. Education is compulsory from age 6 to 14.

Students attend every day of the week except weekends. There is a break from 23 December to 2 January.

State schools and some private schools in Isla Gazebó do not require uniforms. Private schools are also not allowed to deny students for not wearing a uniform.

The Theocracy's schools run year around. There is a one week break for The Festival of Souls. Beyond that, it is six days a week, twelve hours a day, every week of the year. Uniforms are required. Schools are based on a caste system, which takes into account your academic levels and your physical fitness. Higher caste members get a better shot at post-graduation inclusion into Officer's College.

Mackonia's education system is divided along a Tripartite Model, students are stratified based on intelligence (primarily via the Universal Selection Test) into one of three school types.

The Gymnasiums are academically selective and rigorous schools which students attend based on selective entry tests, students learn the standard curriculum of Mackoniask, Literature, Mathematics, History, the three Natural Sciences, Philosophy and Foreign Languages (usually German, English or Russian) as well as Fitness and Firearms training. Every year students take an Annual Aptitude Test, with the weaker ones being weeded out and replaced by new entrants. Most Gymnasiums run from June to March with a holiday lasting from March 7th to May 1st. Days last from 8:00 A.M to 6:30 P.M.

Technic Schools are for the academically ungifted students who fail to get into the Gymnasium. Depending on vacancies in local or national businesses in the area, students are divided up and allocated a 'patron' which trains them for employment in that field. Out of gratitude for their education graduates are obliged by contract to enter the employment of their patron. Hence businesses have a skilled and cheap workforce to draw from, the state avoids the costs of paying for unintelligent citizens and the ungifted students have guaranteed employment upon leaving education. Study revolves around the industry students are training in, but it usually involves a fair bit of Maths and some Science besides the manual work. Term times and hours are not set but vary with the trades themselves, working hours too may vary. Days usually last from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. One may leave the Technic at any time one pleases If one passes the entry tests for the other two classes of school.

The Rhetoric Schools are for the best of the best. The most intelligent children are taken and offered places at these elite and secretive institutions where they are trained for the art of leadership. Students are given the resources to independently pursue their own studies in the normal curriculum while being taught in all the dark arts of statecraft including Rhetoric, Economic Management, Military Strategy, Persuasion and Manipulation, Terror and Propaganda. They are usually inducted into the Seventh Sector or euthanised.

Schooling in the Galactic Empire is a function that once belonged to the people but many generations ago the people were lacking willingness to give a proper education to the young minds of the country so there for the Council of Judges took over ownership of schooling and set up a sophisticated network of government/military run schools for the young minds of the public to attend. All children attend a daycare and preschool but upon their exit at age 5 they and their parents must take an entrance exam to test their knowledge and to decide which classification they will have throughout their school career and throughout the rest of their lives. All students no matter what level attend the same physical campus depending on where they live in the country but they have different sets of core and non-core classes. Within these groups students created an unofficial caste system which the government and schools condone in this student run system higher ranking students make rules as to who students of each level can interact with.

(Example: level 4 students won’t interact with level 2 students or level 1 students can’t interact with any students over level 2)

Level 1: all students who end up here are considered to dumb to be proper citizens and have a very hard time finding any good paying work and as such are given level 1 minimum wage jobs which earn 50% less than the minimum wage jobs for levels 2 and up

Level 2: students here slated for jobs in trade skills and manual labor

Level 3: students here slated for jobs in skilled jobs such as oil industry workers or engineers

Level 4: students here slated for jobs in the medical field or emergency worker field such as police or fire department or prison guards

Level 5: students here slated for jobs in fields of education and places such as museums or science centers

Level 6: students slated for jobs in politics on a city and state wide level

Level 7: students are slated for jobs in the military and military reserves

Level 8: students slated for jobs in business such as CEO’s, CFO’S, or high paying jobs in the business

Level 9: students slated for jobs in fields such as aerospace, scientists, high paying surgeons/ hospital admins, architects

Level 10 & 11: are students who have a single parent or both or any family member in a high ranking position in government such as the Council of judges or a high ranking government job in another country or are the children of the rich and famous or nobility such as the daughters of the Chief Justice.

The school year in Scotland begins on the 3rd week in August. The 1st Semester lasts from August to December, the 2nd lasts from January to March/April and and the 3rd lasts from March/April to June. There are holidays in October, over Christmas/New Year, in February, over Easter and over Summer. There are a few other bank holidays throughout the year, for events such as St. Andrew's Day and Independence Day.

In primary school, pupils learn a variety of subjects, with emphasis on English, Gaelic, Maths, PE and Social Sciences. For the first 2 years of secondary school, pupils continue to study a variety of subjects but starting in their 3rd year, they study subjects of their choice that they will sit for exams. Pupils sit Junior Level exams in 4th year (at age 15/16) and their Higher Level exams in 5th and 6th year (at ages 16/17/18). Exams take place in May and results arrive in late July.

The primary/secondary school year typically begins around mid-September and ends around mid-June; exact dates vary by school system. As an example, the school year will begin on 10 September for schools run by the Capital Public Education Authority (CPEA), responsible for public education in the National Capital Authority.

Primary/secondary schools nationwide run on what is called a trimester system, with the year divided into three roughly equal parts - autumn term, often from mid-September to mid-December; winter term, often from January to late March or early April; and spring term, often from April to mid-June.

There are four types of primary/secondary school, listed as follows. (Exact terminology varies by province, but these terms listed are the terms used by the Federal government.)
  • State school, a school that is funded primarily by a province and/or other public sources and is comprehensive, in that it does not take intellectual aptitude into account when determining admissions. All publicly-funded primary schools are state schools, and a large majority of publicly-funded secondary schools are state schools as well.
  • Grammar school, a school that is funded primarily by a province and/or other public sources and is academically selective, often requiring a certain score on a provincially-designed placement exam for admission and definitely requiring good marks from the primary school record. Only secondary schools may be grammar schools, and these are more often found in urban areas than in rural areas; many grammar schools are also boarding schools, particularly if they are intended to serve a larger geographical area than just a city.
  • Public school, a school that is not funded by a public source and is not religious in nature. These schools charge tuition fees and are almost exclusively secondary schools. Like grammar schools, public schools are often boarding schools.
  • Religious school, a school that is not funded by a public source and incorporates religious education into the curriculum. These schools often charge smaller fees than public schools, and are just as likely to be primary schools (and especially combined primary-secondary schools) as they are to be secondary schools. These include Catholic and Protestant schools, as well as Jewish day schools, Islamic madrasas, etc.

Primary education begins formally for a student in the year that said student turns age six by a certain date (the CPEA sets the cutoff at 30 June, as do most school authorities.) It lasts for seven years in Lower Cuam, Upper Cuam, the Ganja Metropolitan Authority, and the National Capital Authority, and six years in the other provinces. Students are taught a variety of subjects; these are namely maths, sciences, geography, history, English, and Japanese, often with the addition of physical education. Most students attend state schools at this level, although a sizable minority attend religious schools (especially Catholic schools, even if the pupil's family is not Catholic or even Christian, for that matter.) School levels are often called "years" in primary education (i.e. "third year").

Secondary education begins upon the conclusion of primary school. It last for five years nationwide (or seven; see further in this paragraph). Students continue following a generalised, albeit more focused in terms of subject (i.e. "algebra" instead of just "maths") curriculum for generally the first two years, and then have a little more leeway in deciding what subjects to choose from then on. In Lower Cuam, Upper Cuam, the GMA, and the NCA, fifth year is when students sit for university exams; in other provinces, a two-year sixth form or college stage is undertaken, and students sit for university exams during upper sixth form (the second year of this sixth form/college stage.) Secondary education is required until the age of seventeen in provinces with five years of secondary education, or until the completion of fifth form in provinces with sixth form/college stage. School levels are often called "forms".

In places where sixth form is referred to as "college", sixth form education is often provided by a separate institution from secondary schools, which often overlaps with vocational education and is at least partially publicly funded. Provinces where this is the case are Tensei, Okamirin, Daime, and Kuroyama.

Tertiary education begins with satisfactory completion of entrance exams. Most undergraduate degree programmes (bachelor's degrees) last for three years in provinces with sixth form, and for four years in provinces without sixth form. For students coming from a province with a sixth form, a university in a province without sixth form may offer an "Advanced Standing" programme for students in that and other situations; similarly, universities in provinces with sixth forms may offer a "Pre-University" general education year for students from provinces or other areas without sixth form or an equivalent (i.e. for American students). Postgraduate education starts with master's degrees, earned in either one or two years; one-year master's are referred to as taught degrees, whereas two-years are referred to as research degrees and are often a stepping-stone into doctoral programmes, which often take at least three years post-master's.

Tertiary school years are exclusively organised on a semester basis, often with a shortened summer term. Autumn term here often runs from late August or early September to mid-December, while spring term often runs from mid-January to late April or early May. Summer term often runs for half the length of a typical term, running from June to July.

School starts after the nation's Labour Day, and usually lasts until the end of June. A wide variety of subjects are taught at elementary and high schools, which are all publicly funded and free, while specializations can be further explored at college and university levels. School attendance up to and including high school is mandatory for all children and teenagers.

"Basic Education" spans elementary and secondary school, the core subjects of which revolve heavily around language, mathematics, science and logic. Secondary subjects include computer studies and history. There is also a comprehensive physical education program that accompanies academic subjects. Arts are restricted to school clubs and extra-curricular activities.

Roughly broken down:
Language:
    - Greek
    - English
    - French
    - German
    - Usually, students take up one more language as an elective for the last 2 years of secondary school. Popular choices are Russian and Spanish.
    - Classical languages such as Ancient Greek/Grecian, Latin and Sanskrit usually offered as electives, but not mandatory.
Mathematics:
    - Basic Arithmetic
    - Algebra
    - Geometry
    - Trigonometry
    - Pre-calculus
Science:
    - Biology & Environmental Sciences
    - Health Science
    - Chemistry
    - Physics
Logic:
    - Basic Logic (Syllogistic, Propositional. Predicate, Modal)
    - Informal Logic
    - Mathematical Logic
    - Philosophical Logic
    - Computational Logic
Computer Studies:
    - Computer Science
    - HTML/CSS
    - Python
    - Ruby
History: (Social Studies integrated into history)
    - Spartan History + National Social Studies
    - European History + European Studies
    - World History + International Studies
Populuar choices for club/extra-curricular activities range from performing arts and music to combat/full-contact sports. Notable are classical instruments, wrestling, and rugby. Literature does not seem to be a popular choice.

The national requirements for physical education programs mandate that each academic year, students are to pass a battery of tests involving bodyweight and gymnastic exercises.
