Alternate Template - Ashkera's Factbook

Postby Ashkera » Sun Jul 26, 2015 12:36 pm

I have never been particularly fond of the "standard" template for a wiki-style factbook. I tend to feel it doesn't really provide me with the information that I really want about a nation in the overview. So a while back, I cooked up my own factbook format.

Someone has requested the code for it, so I have prepared a template. Here's what the dummy template looks like as a factbook. And here's mine, which I based it off of for comparison.

Code: Select all

Overview
This section should be a short overview of your nation which will give your reader a general idea of what it's like.  It should include the rough size, dominant climate, and one sentence description of the population.

Very briefly describe the living conditions (good or bad?), civil and political rights (free or restricted?), state of the economy (good or bad?), and degree of public order (orderly or biker gangs?).

List three to five "national happenings" like you would get after passing an issue, but of your own design.  For example: "Brazilistan sympathizers are kidnapped from their homes while they sleep by government agents, membership in the parliament is a state secret, and the country is rumored to have the highest number of spies per capita of any nation in its hemisphere."

The flag image is the one hosted by nationstates - or it will be for you.  You can get its URL by right-clicking on it and picking the correct option in most browsers.

Describe the general location and environmental condition of the country, its rough layout, location of key cities, dominant climates, and any particularly important features or wildlife.  If foreign tourists visit, are they going to find stunning tropical beaches, frigid alpine mountains, or both?  What's the weather like?  How much pollution is there - is the country an industrial wasteland, or brimming with flora and fauna?

The demonstration banner above is 800x140 pixels.  It's best if they're all about the same size.  You can use a different banner for each section showing a relevant image - kind of like the banners NS itself uses.  Alternatively you could just make one banner for your country and re-use it.  Otherwise, you can just remove them, or just remove some of them.

If you don't have anything for the related links, you can just remove it and add it back later.

Economy
First off, what kind of economy is it?  Communist, capitalist, mixed?  What is the dominant size of firms - large megacorporations, medium-sized businesses, or small mom-and-pops?  Are there state-owned companies, and if so, what do they do?

What particular areas of strength are there in your country's economy?  Is it good at making cars, or aircraft - or is it more agrarian, focusing on basic foodstuffs and wool?

What is the state of transportation in your country?  How is the rail network, if you have one?  Is there any public transportation?  Is your country littered with highways?

How are the safety regulations?  What's the state of regulation in general?  Is there welfare, and if so, for who?

Does your country allow businesses that are 'too big to fail'?  What does it do about business monopolies or if companies misbehave?

What are the primary sources of energy/electricity in your country?

History
The history is broken up into spoiler-tagged sections to prevent it from taking up too much space.  Long lists of individual rulers should be placed into a separate factbook and linked back here as a "related article" - what you want to provide here is a general history so that your reader can get a good picture of your nation's development at a glance.
120-1780 Medieval Period
There were knights and stuff, and also kings.  They killed each other a lot.  This section could easily be more than one paragraph if you want to fluff it up and spread it out, but more than three paragraphs and it should be its own article.

You'll probably want to include what the situation was like with civil rights and survival and what-have-you, but it should be small enough for one paragraph.

1780-1901 Revolutionary Period
The knights and the kings were all killed by revolutionaries in a bloody coup.  They installed a Republican government.
1901-present The People's Glorious Eternal Federal Republic of Your Nation
Sadly, a dictator eventually rose to power and filled this part of the history section with his exploits, including how he rose to power and what the government is up to now.

This section should give your reader an idea on what the current trends in your country are, based on its recent history.

Government
Related: <Link to another article, possibly a detailed list of political parties>

Who rules the government and what are they like?  How are they chosen?  Is there a legislature, and if so, what kind?  How are the members selected?

What's the situation with elections?  Do you have them?  Is voting mandatory?  Is only one party allowed?  How often are they?

What are the basic political parties, their relative levels of support, and what do they stand for?

How corrupt is the government?  What are they doing about it?

Civil Rights
General overview of the situation with civil rights, such as marriage, homosexuality, abortion, police powers, and so on.  This is more about what the government's up to than what the populous thinks is right, however.  You might also slip in some stuff about your legal system.

People
Who are these people and where do they live?  Is it urban?  Is it rural?  Do different groups live in different areas?

Related: <Some other article, like a list of TV Shows>
What's the culture like?  Are people individualist or collectivist?  Are they conservative and moralistic or do they just let everyone do their own thing?  Is it one big culture or lots of little cultures?  What do they think about immigrants?  What do they think about government?

Are there any special cultural 'quirks'?  How do they feel about technology?

How does the education system work?  Does it work well?

What's the fashion like?

Provide a general overview.  Does your nation have a draft or conscription?  What are the soldiers like?  What are their vehicles like?  Do they import their weapons?  Are they loyal?

The table to the right is to give a general overview of the relative strength of forces, without needing to spell out the exact specifics.  If you want to write out the exact number of each particular variety of tank you have, that would probably go in a related article and be linked back here.
