On the same subject, found case and bullet measurements for ye olde 6.5x57mm Federov, so I modeled it.
Question is, would the 6.5mm be a good replacement for 7.62mmR? I do know that using opens up the frankly awesome potential of the Avtomat Federov.

No it wouldn't be, mostly because pressure, ballistic coefficients, and other things. 7.62x54mmR was superior in every regard tbh, at least in the GPMG and rifle role.

Unless ofc you don't actually mean Federovs 6.5 cartridge and instead mean 6.5 Arasaka, in which case it's still no, but 6.5 Nipaneeae was a precursor to assault rifles as we know them today.

6x49mm would be a better replacement.

I would think that 6.5×55mm Swedish would suit a GPMG if you want something old. But yeah the 6x49mm Unified round seems like it could have been a winner though I wonder about barrel wear.

The modern 6.5x55mm skarp patron m/94 prickskytte m/41 is very different than the original 6.5×55mm skarp patron m/94 projektil m/94 though, while Federovs 6.5F round and the Niponeese 6.5 were...well they were contemporaries.

Thoughts on the smart gun from Aliens?

I'm thinking the biggest drawback is that the thing seems awful hard to use when not standing. Nowhere in any fiction is the gun depicted with a tripod or bipod mount. The rear handle is even in line with the rest of the gun - fine if you're standing up, but not fine if you are trying to fire from a fixed position.

I don't think it would be very hard to change this(ditch the harness, give it a pistol grip, and slap on a bipod) but other than that, anyone have any criticisms of it?

I know Land Warrior experimented with the idea of having a camera on your gun for firing around corners and stuff. Hell, Cornershot does just that - although it used pistols.

If you were to hand wave the weight issue of things like bigger machine guns - presumably, in the future they may find a way to make steel even stronger and lighter, I mean we've been doing that since we discovered metals. If you were to figure that out, and do something about the high recoil, could you be able to make a handheld heavy machine gun?

I think the technology changes that would make a heavy weapon man portable it becomes a MMG or something similar and the new heavy weapon is the weapon that weighs enough that it needs multiple people and/or vehicles to be used effectively.

Plus any technologies that improve a troopers ability to carry heavier weapons are probably also going to improve the armor that trooper is carrying.

Helpful hints on combat vehicle terminology.

The colonial marines technical manual illustrates a couple of non standing positions for the smart gun. For kneeling the rear goes over your shoulder and for prone you lie on your back and fire between you feet. These work as the actual main trigger is on the forward "chainsaw grip).
Mount's for smart guns do exist in universe that's pretty much what the sentry guns are.

The harness is really all there is. Without that it's just an MG and there is nothing in particular to say about it.

Weight is not the issue. It is entirely possible to make HMGs light enough to carry.

It's firing it that is the problem.

Talking about HMG light enough to carry, why were the Russian and Chinese able to come up with lightweight 12.7mm machineguns that shot at a normal rate but the Americans were not? Though I don't know if the Chinese use the W85.

Both the Kord and W85 are modern designs using gas operated actions, the M2 is esentially an upscaled 1920s .30cal mg that uses a short recoil action.
The most recent US attempt at a lightweight .50 the XM806 actually only weighed about two thirds as much as the Kord.

So the answer would be a simple: The US tried to do too much for current technology. If they just had 5 more kg they could have had a new HMG?

Not at all.

"Current technology" wrt firearms has generally stopped since the 1950s. LWMG was killed because of post-Bellum budget snipping, not any technical reasons. Establishing the supply chain for manufacture and providing enough M806s to replace M2 would have been pretty expensive. More than just putting in some minor modifications to M2 that can be done by unit level armourers like a QCB bracket and a flash hider.
