On the same subject, found case and bullet measurements for ye olde 6.5x57mm Federov, so I modeled it.
Question is, would the 6.5mm be a good replacement for 7.62mmR? I do know that using opens up the frankly awesome potential of the Avtomat Federov.
No it wouldn't be, mostly because pressure, ballistic coefficients, and other things. 7.62x54mmR was superior in every regard tbh, at least in the GPMG and rifle role.
Unless ofc you don't actually mean Federovs 6.5 cartridge and instead mean 6.5 Arasaka, in which case it's still no, but 6.5 Nipaneeae was a precursor to assault rifles as we know them today.
6x49mm would be a better replacement.

HAH! 6.4x31mm Euric (to the left) & 6x35mm Aírmanareiks (to the right) demand an audience with the freedom bringer.

I'm thinking the biggest drawback is that the thing seems awful hard to use when not standing. Nowhere in any fiction is the gun depicted with a tripod or bipod mount. The rear handle is even in line with the rest of the gun - fine if you're standing up, but not fine if you are trying to fire from a fixed position.
I don't think it would be very hard to change this(ditch the harness, give it a pistol grip, and slap on a bipod) but other than that, anyone have any criticisms of it?
I know Land Warrior experimented with the idea of having a camera on your gun for firing around corners and stuff. Hell, Cornershot does just that - although it used pistols.
If you were to hand wave the weight issue of things like bigger machine guns - presumably, in the future they may find a way to make steel even stronger and lighter, I mean we've been doing that since we discovered metals. If you were to figure that out, and do something about the high recoil, could you be able to make a handheld heavy machine gun?

Both the Kord and W85 are modern designs using gas operated actions, the M2 is esentially an upscaled 1920s .30cal mg that uses a short recoil action.
The most recent US attempt at a lightweight .50 the XM806 actually only weighed about two thirds as much as the Kord.

So the answer would be a simple: The US tried to do too much for current technology. If they just had 5 more kg they could have had a new HMG?
