The hook doesn't help in that situation by being hook-shaped, it helps by being an extra piece of metal to bash the enemy's face in with. I'm not sure why that's hard to understand.
Practice and you'll get better. I used to be shit and now here I am doing this.
When I was a kid I could actually draw stuff. I mean, faces, bodies that didn't look like lovecraftian monsters and some spooky monsters too. Now I just draw stick figures on the side of my paper while at work.
So instead of drawing stick figures, draw other things. You won't get anywhere unless you try.
Think about using coworkers as references for practice pieces. Find photos of things you want to draw and use them as references. All my stuff starts as a sketch or doodle - being able to lay out an idea on paper is the basis for everything more advanced, and it's not hard to get the hang of with a bit of perseverance.
