Greatswords don't have huge blades as it is; you want some thickness as greatswords are subject to a lot of stresses but you have to do everything possible to keep weight down.

That's not the only mechanism, though. Drag plays a huge part in stripping the sabot away from the projectile, but first the sabot needs to be freed to separate. This is necessary because of how rigid the sabot needs to be in order to stay in one piece when it's not being fired (especially considering a scenario in which the saboted projectile is entirely independent of any kind of propellant case to hold it together). I know that APFSDS sabots are sheared within the bore using mechanical pressure, and so I would take it as being the most practical option in this case as well.

So far as I know, the AAI (well, actually Honeywell) aerodynamic sabots were purely stripped by air pressure on exiting the barrel. These replaced the previous sabots, which requires a mechanical stripper. A similar kind of sabot was used with the Steyr ACR.

The Steyr IWS 2000 used a more conventional APDS style sabot, which may or may not have used air pressure or a pressure differential, I'm not sure, but it would probably work in your squeezebore design.

I suspect that the revised Honeywell sabots didn't need any extra effort for splitting the petals due to the fact that the case neck would hold them together well enough before firing. Once out the barrel, the sabot would no longer benefit from a crimped brass band around it and be pulled off by air resistance. The o-ring that held the bottom together would likely be of little consequence to the projectile's flight (it had very wide fins), or would be blown off by the propellant.

By the way, thank you for your feedback. I think that you have helped me to decide to use the stressed ring concept for the sabot. Now, I need to figure out how magazine loading and from-breech extraction would work.
