Cast steel is brittle (as far as I know, could have different processes), and I don't think they had the means to get steel molten back then. It's much easier to forge it.

Is it the result of the heat and slow cooling? If so, tempering would fix that, right? You'd need to re-heat it anyway to hammer it, after all.

Metalurgy is complex biznis, but I think it boils down to the gubbins of the cast steel are all thrown all over the place and in no order that is good as a weapon. It's relatively soft and brittle (at the same time, I think?). It's mainly used for thing that get really hot, like engine parts. Cast metal and forged metal are basically opposites, so their methods don't apply to eachother.

Good to know. After a little bit more research and thought, I realized steel castings would also end up with voids because of shrinkage, so the initial question's moot.

No the Romans literally had compressed air. At the Battle of Zama the Romans buried compressed air cyliners just in front of their lines. When Hannibal sent in his elephants, they were detonated and the elephants ran back into Hannibal's chariots, pretty much destroying them. From there it was just a matter of flanking the now cavalry-less Carthaginian army. That was the end of the Second Punic War.

Cast iron/steel Hard and brittle. Forged iron is less hard but tougher.

Well, kinda. For one, .50AE will fucking destroy you. There is no real equal in terms of its actual lethality (in non-Full Metal Jamal expanding projectiles) outside of the largest pistol calibers and larger rifle rounds in terms of cavity. Even after full yaw 5.45x39 has difficulty keeping up with the sound cavity volume of an expanded .50AE, and only does so because it penetrates a whole 6in/15cm deeper mean.

With some versions of .50AE were talking about as much as .78in² of expansion. That's fucking huge. That's downright keky. That's expansion previously only seen in your mom (OHHHHHHH)

The mean penetrarion is about 15.6in/396mm across the board; the most expansive of these low range at 13.9/353mm, and the more solid of these top out at 16.5in/~400mm.

The wound cavity typically has a mean volume of [Data missing], which translates to very fucking big in record keeping index-ese.

This was before I had the proper instruments to measure wound volume and therefore had to do math by hand, and this was not a necessity per the contractor

.50AE can stop a bear, it can stop a you. However, a SMG chbered it it is going to be lolhueg and have recoil comparable to a, I dont knkw, probably 7.62x39mm caliber rifle. While that's fine, its a bit excessive for a SMG.

So what about a .500 S&W SMG?

So assuming you could get the round derimmed and somehow fit it into a proper rifle pattern weapon, I really wouldnt call .500 S&W Magnum a SMG round at all.

From the fatass S&W X-Frame .500 (8" for her pleasure), the round develops 1627fps/496m/s with this stupid fatass 440gr/26g JHP.

Penetration is 17.6in/44.7cm, and it offeres a nice expansion of 0.587in², some versions develop a whole 1.04in² of expansion, which is even kekyer.

This makes a cavity 13.50101 cubic inches/221.24186 cubic cm size.
