Anyone have a straight, rectangular object 20mm wide (front to back if you imagine it's a sword grip) near them ? If so, how does it feel in the hand? I'm trying to scale this chopping sword thing and the handle turns out at 20mm wide. 20mm doesn't seem that good, but it's on a two handed weapon so maybe it would be okay in terms of handling? It's also full tang but the blade is rather large for such a thin tang.

For work against shields, how could it be issued to the regular solders? Since they make up the entire front line I assume it would be used by 1 out of *however many men* in a century.

I'd expect you to send all you SS auxiliaries against the wall and follow behind with your legion

Actually I don't even know what to call it.

Probably something along the lines of Great Sickle, or maybe a Latin corruption of Khopesh. Khocrus maybe, using Khopesh (leg) as well as "crus", which is Latin for leg.

Okay this things is pretty massive. Even after I shortend the handle it's nearly 1500mm overall. No idea if forging it is even possible 2000 years ago. Also I got the handle to 30mm wide by just scaling the whole thing up or down or whatever, hence why the sword is so big.

What is the exact purpose of the sword? It seems to me to be a regression in design, since it looks like it's only good for chopping, which an axe can do just as well (if not better and cheaper). I know squat about sickle swords besides the fact they were used in ancient Egypt though, so forgive me if that's stupid. Also, you could call it the magna hamus, since it's basically a giant hook.

If you are making a sword out of Bronze like they did in ye olden times (or early iron weapons which were crap even compared to bronze) the material you have to work with is softer than steel. So you can't make a very long blade because it will just bend on you. And yet you do need a certain amount of heft so that you can chop into people. So you end up making a sort of axe shaped monstrosity that balances like an axe but chops really well.
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

The above post contains hyperbole, metaphoric language, embellishment and exaggeration. It may also include badly translated figures of speech and misused idioms. Analyze accordingly.

Not 100% sure. It was originally just an oversized khopesh because reasons, but in it's original state it would have been unusable because of the size. Now that I've shortened it to 1238mm, it should be okay.

But as for purpose, like Aqiz said it would be best suited to attacking shieldwalls. I don't know how well the Romans used the gladius against them, but I have a hunch that shorts aren't all that well suited to large shield formations. So I think it would be a good addition if in the hands of irregulars it can help to break up the enemy defense before the regulars get stuck in.

And I like that name

Proper weapons grade bronze (9-11% tin content) is roughly comparable to 0.1/0.2% C steel that has not undergone any heat treatment. It can even cut through a sheet of mild steel with relatively little damage to a work hardened edge.

Yes, it can and will bend even in relatively short blades, but no more than reconstructions of early pattern welded blades seem to have bent. Said bend can be straightened out by changing the angle of the attack.

yus

Still irrelevant since my sword is steel though.

Speaking of which, how do you think a sword blade shaped like and as large as mine made from steel of the time could hold up to damage and possible breakage? Assume it's NotIberian steel, which is beststeel.

It'd hold up well enough, I think. You might need to pattern weld it in order to get a big enough billet to work with, but that depends on the size of your bloomeries.
