The University of Inljoń is the oldest university in Satterthwaite, its history stretching back nearly a thousand years when it first started as a place for monks to learn their letters. Gradually, the institution of learning grew until Emperor Louis, First of that Esteemed Name, established it as the premier university of the Empire. With secularism came progress and, soon, the University opened its doors to everyone who was able to prove they could keep up with the university's high standards. Nowadays, the University is regarded as the best place to jumpstart your political and legislative career, the domain of the Nobility. Some have accused the University of nepotism and unfair admissions process, but some would say that those were merely the complaints of the 'common folk' and not worth listening to. Nevertheless, the University is still regarded as prestigious. Some of the most notable degree programs in the university are: political science, law, economics, financial management, and business.

Meanwhile, the University of Ober-Graz is much more modern, having been founded only two hundred years ago when liberals, sick and tired of what they saw as the 'corruption' pervading the University of Inljoń, broke away from the said University and established a school they called 'Academy of Higher Learning.' Eventually, the Academy became a force to rival the University of Inljoń and, sixty-five years after its foundation, it finally gained imperial recognition when Emperor Philippe, Third of that Esteemed Name, bestowed upon it the honor of being an 'Imperial Institution.' With that decision, they changed the name to the more formal-sounding University of Ober-Graz—which, in reality, never actually changed anything: Ober-Graz is Polmeranian slang for 'know-it-all.' Today, the University of Ober-Graz is known for its liberal atmosphere, its low admission fees, and is regarded as having the best science programs the Empire has to offer. Nobles have deemed it too 'plebeian' and 'common' but some would tell you that's just nobles talking. The most notable degree programs of Ober-Graz are: physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and humanities.

It is worthwhile to note the rivalry between the two universities, dubbed 'Oberljon' by bystanders. The Oberljon rivalry has produced the most heated moments in Satterthwaitean educational history, yet has also produced the best moments as well. Currently, they have a 'shared monopoly' on the University Competitions, often dividing the various sporting and academic events between the two of them.
