Careful, she'll start making you watch the romantic "chick flick" movies :p

To be honest if you are at the point of beginning a film education then the check flick days are well past.

So Paragania in the CYOA thread posted a lol-big helicopter based on some old design study and concept art. This gave me a very very very bad idea for my own super heavy helicopter. Holding to my philosophy of "Everything ridiculously big made for NS should make use of nuclear power" philosophy, I'm wondering what the feasibility would be for making a nuclear Turbshaft engine. Note that this would in no way be intended for a serious design.

Remember the limiting factor for nuclear-powered aircraft is very low PWR/TWR due to reactors being very heavy. I imagine this effect would be much more pronounced in a helicopter. At least aircraft generate lift in level flight.

The concept that he posted listed a payload of around 40 tons, which based on what I've read should enough for an aircraft reactor and some shielding. I do realize however that this pretty much kills having anything resembling a useful payload.

Would converting 3"/50 caliber and 4"/50 caliber naval guns into tank/anti-tank weapons for a WW2 setting be reasonable?

I do remember taking a look at their website a while ago and occasionally they did look very unprofessional...I suppose at least they did a good job during the movie?

EDIT: If there's one thing I enjoy most about them in the reenactment, it's the one guy who always way over-dramatizes his death. One year he flipped over a trench, this year he clenched at his heart, did a spin, then slowly crumpled.

Not quite. I'm unsure about the specifics of the F-35, but for many fighter aircraft, not every hard point can take the weight of every missile or there could be overlap between two different hard points preventing large weapons to be mounted on both, even if they could take the weight. In addition throwing the maximum weight onto every hard point for some aircraft might be more payload then the aircraft is capable of lifting.

What kind of range are you talking about? With what kind of payload?

Internal-stowage only, or including external hardpoints?

It's a pretty broad question. A big missile like JASSM would be external-only and would be limited to maybe four or so. A smaller one like Brimstone with a multi-launch unit could be well over a dozen.

Can flack guns be carried by one person and if so, can such a thing actually shoot down helicopters?

If I were to modify RPG-7 warheads to do such a thing, would something like a HE or shrapnel warhead be a good idea?

No.

The warhead type is less useful than the fuze. Regular HEAT will do just fine against helicopters, the trouble is hitting them with a short-range unguided weapon.

First, it's spelled 'flak' - it's a shortened German word for 'Flugzeugabwehrkanone', which literally means 'aircraft attack cannon'. the moar u know

Second, no. At most, one person could lug a 7.62mm machine gun, which can actually present a danger to helicopters, but not a huge one. A trio of people could carry a 12.7mm heavy machine gun, tripod, and ammo, which presents a bit more of a danger, though usually that would be for defending something - you wouldn't helicopter hunt with it.

If you want an autocannon-sized gun, though, it's almost certainly going to have to be vehicle mounted. The absolute bare minimum is something like an Oerlikon 20mm on this kind of mount, or some sort of wheeled carriage system. The good news is that most autocannon-sized guns do present a significant danger, especially to helicopters flying low and slow, or certain ground-attack planes like the A-10. Even with a couple hits, you might not down the helicopter, but you'll probably have damaged it enough that the pilots won't risk sticking around.

As for using rockets to do that, you could do a lot better than the RPG-7. Whatever you use, unguided rockets aren't going to be hugely effective. You will have to wait until the helicopter is hovering, or just fill the air with enough rockets that one will hit; see the Black Hawk Down-style scenario for this in action. Cheap-ass guided MANPADs are probably going to be more effective; the Mujahadeen proved the Stinger missile in Afghanistan, and there are plenty of cheaper, better things than 80s tech now anyway. The warhead type probably won't matter, so long as it produces a powerful blast wave and plenty of shrapnel(any HE-filled tube will do that). MANPADs generally have warheads optimized to produce a spray of shrapnel, so may be more effective if they hit, but YMMV.

If you mean an anti-aircraft gun, no however they can be carried by a couple people, but it's more effective to just use missiles.

RPG-7s can already do this, if you shoot at helicopters near the self-destruct range of the warhead. A specifically designed RPG warhead would be inefficient, you're better off using a Stinger missile or something at that point.
