Will a 5x12" display even fit on your forearm?

Well, your forearms maybe, but a Johnny Average like myself? Sounds cumbersome. Moreso than carrying the thing.

It would protrude a bit, but not enough to be much of an annoyance for the clerical andor uninvolved care work that is done at my ob. In the military application though its horrid.

I may have overestimated the scale of my forearm to other peoples forearms; I sometimes forget I have proto-gorilla length arms.
But people should get bigger forearms.

Just spitballing here: You could have two integrated screens (basically a dual monitor setup) that run from the same OS and serve a similar purpose. A large screen would be attached to the forearm for in-detail work or large images (battlefield maps, looking up whether or not you got paid, filing your tax return) and a small (3"x3") screen would be attached to the back of the hand with a more simplistic interface, with a handful of inputs that would be relayed to your allies/CO. Commands like "hostiles here" and "mortar fire requested there" would be given from the small screen with a single button, allowing ease of use for footsoldiers, while commanding officers would primarily use the larger forearm pad to look at the overall region and see where hostiles/allies are located.
EDIT: this system would, of course, only be deployed in the year 2280 (alongside power armor and laser rifles) because no nation would be willing to pay the cost-per-unit.

A back-of-hand screen seems even less useful. 3x3" is larger than your hand (or thereabouts) and you'd have to drop your weapon to use it.
Just, tablets.

That raises a question, for me at least. If I were to issue tablets to Azurgan platoon/section commanders, what would they be used for? I suppose real time maps and the like, but I can't see much else for them.

Maps, radio, orders, fire control (of supporting arms).
I don't see it adding a great deal of utility, but the major reason the air force (and commercial airlines) started introducing tablets was to cut down on paper charts. It's of greater utility to pilots and aircrew where there is a lot of information, much of it visual, that does need to be kept track of.

Eh. I'm partial to the idea of a convenient PDA like device for NCOs and unit commands, having it mounted on the non-dominate position makes sense, but not in an MT setting really, since its liable to break. You'd need strong materials, touchscreens, self healing glass, ect. in order to actually make it practical. All of these are totally possible now, just very expensive and cost-prohibitive in a sense.

In the year 2030 though, who knows.

I already give all of my soldiers a PDA/smartphone thing, as I imagined it had built in radio and GPS along with other functions. Officers get a tablet as well. To keep costs down I figured on not bothering to make them to tough. If they break they break and you get a replacement. Then again I am an idiot so this might not work.

The Archangel Conglomerate wrote:That raises a question, for me at least. If I were to issue tablets to Azurgan platoon/section commanders, what would they be used for? I suppose real time maps and the like, but I can't see much else for them.

Potentially better ability to call support fire and coordinate with nearby units.

Now, I don't know what caliber this thing would be in, but it's probably one of the few firearms that can't be improved by rechambering it to 7.92x57mm IS. My best guess would be ~31-caliber ball, though.

I think the 5.56mm that the M16 was originally chambered in.

EDIT: I'm thinking military rounds here, so the 2mm Kolibri doesn't count.

I wonder how far though. I mean, at some point you probably won't be able to manufacture them. Like, say we were to use the same tech used for microchips to make a microbullet.

Oh please, that looks more like a FAMAS.
The necessity of a navy, in the restricted sense of the word, springs, therefore, from the existence of a peaceful shipping, and disappears with it, except in the case of a nation which has aggressive tendencies, and keeps up a navy merely as a branch of the military establishment. 1

As someone who's played with various flavors of tablet I feel comfortable saying that full sized tablets, while overall more tedious to use, are significantly more useful than mobiles.

Spirit of Hope wrote:Potentially better ability to call support fire and coordinate with nearby units.

I'll be honest, it doesn't seem to justify the expense.

That said, it'd be pretty neat to equip everyone with something like a Neptune Duo. Give the grunts the watch and Bluetooth headset and they've got access to basic navigation and comms. Give them the screen to go with it and they can actually read their maps, call fire support and probably surf bad-dragon or some shit.

Replace the normal scree with the tablet version for commanders and you're golden.

Why do the grunts need to navigate anyway? The squad commander should be navigating them. And if he dies they can just pick up his tablet. How often are soldiers going to get lost in the field?

Define "possible". Effective or possible? Because if they can make guitars a 6 nanometers, you can make a cartridge smaller than you can conceive.
