Typhoon sounds like BMPT before its time, tbh. Pop-up missile launcher, with two Groms mounted either side.

It sounds literally nothing like BMPT.

The concept had forty years to refine itself.

Does anyone know anything about about the GIAT 120mm gun? Is it comparable to the Russia or the German counterpart?

That's an abominably inefficient use of a tank unit.

You could do it cheaper and faster with these new things called medium trucks. By orders of magnitude.

Russia uses a 125 mm gun. It gained reliance and power over its soviet predecessor but it is still underpowered in comparison with the 120 mm guns used by the west.
The Rhinemetal 120 mm L 55 is one of the best if not the best 120 mm gun. French tank lovers will hang me for this.
I personally put the 120 mm L 52 gun as maybe the second best gun with its caliber.
The GIAT one is used only by the Leclerc.
The Rhinemetal one is used on the: Leopard, Abrams and the K1 tanks. The K2 will use the 122 L 55

Yes I do know stuff about it.
Better then Russian, equal to the German.

The French gun and the German gun are virtually identical except for a few minor changes. They even use the exact same ammunition.
The French gun is longer then the L/44, shorter then the L/55. It also lacks a bore evactuator and has a different recoil system.
Same ammunition though.

iirc the Lelcerc has an overpressure system to force out fumes from the firing of the gun.

The French use their own ammunition, the Germans use their own ammunition.

In theory, there's intercompatibility. In practice, I have yet to find records that indicate French 120mm ammunition being tested in Rheinmetall guns. Cross-compatibility isn't really quite that simple - even within Japan, after all, the Type 10 can fire 120mm ammunition that can't be fired from the Type 90's license produced L/44.

How are Russian 125mm guns underpowered compared to western 120mm guns? IIRC the only major difference between the two was ammunition.

Turns out that if your ammo is weaker than the gun it self is underpowered.

Isn't that only applicable for Russian KEPs vs. western KEPS? If that's the case, then it's a bit of stretch to call Russian guns underpowered than western guns if only one ammunition type is comparatively lacking.

So Russian ammo is inefficient compared to the capabilities of the gun itself? I've always wondered why the Russians went with 125mm and how it does hold up to German 120mm.

I just did. Because frankly there is no such thing as an official way of measuring one gun against another. At least none that I am aware off. So I made up one based on the only thing that makes any sense at all.
