Sir. You do know smoothbore tank guns can fire anti tank missiles out of the barrel. So no need for anti tank missiles mounted on the tank.

The cool thing about M-551 missile is that it's a MBT missile. Imagine if the MBT-70 had become a thing. In fact, just imagine an army of the OTAN armed with all the equipment they wanted. MBT-70 MBTs with M-551's riding along side them, supported against air targets by Sgt. Yorks. XB-70's flying through the air escorted by Avro Arrows whilst AvroCar flying jeeps buzz just above the ground like a pack of jet fueled locusts doing jeep stuff. Soldiers running around with G11 caseless rifles and GPGM's in 7mm British. And Davy Crocketts everywhere!

Oh I don't know. Let's give them all the cool toys they wanted too.

Enter Yak-141 VTOL jets taking off from Ulyanovsk carriers to provide support for T-7 heavy tanks as they roll around the battlefield extinguishing what's left after the IT-1s are done by using ALL teh machine guns. All the while 1K17s are blazing across the battlefield zapping everyone in the eyes with doom lasers. And MiG-105's are zooming in from outer space to drop bombs on stuff before performing feats of perfect low-speed handling and landing.

Didn't the Soviets have plans for a "ATGM MBT" at some point? Back when Khrushchev was going through his "lol misselz" phase?

I think there were two competing missile tank projects at the same time.
IT-1 and Objekt 287 "Taifun", according to wiki.

Typhoon sounds like BMPT before its time, tbh. Pop-up missile launcher, with two Groms mounted either side.

With some of the cheap laser guided rocket kits coming out these days, that rack may be a viable design again.

No, IT-1 and Object 287 used "conventional" pop-up missile launchers. The one I'm thinking of fired missiles, and only missiles, from an enclosed turret with a (rifled?) gun.

Actually, never mind, I just found it - Object 775.

Composite matrix of laminated ceramic-steel-nickel alloy. Sloped modular design. Augmented by spall liners. In the near future it is planned to be equipped with the Trophy active protection system. Sadly it is classified.
