A trackball would be imprecise and a mouse is very fiddly to use. You can't be unaware of how awkward trackpads or mice can be to use when doing, say, pixel art. They're a total ballache.

The advantage to a fixed joystick is that when the tank is jarring around over rough terrain, you have something to hold on to.
That's why it's quite common for commander's controls in modern tanks.

On tanks where the joystick moves, there is a good arm rest to brace against. It's actually the biggest complaint from Abrams crews who have cross-trained. Or foreign crews who have crossed trained on the Abrams.

A trackball, or mouse, would be a serious step backwards.

Trackballs could be better for fine control, like how crank handles were used for fine control when powered turrets came about. You use the joystick for getting the turret pointed in the general direction of the target, then use the ball you get on target with far greater precision.

If the stick has a non-linear response to inputs the separate fine tracker probably isn't needed.

If you got the idea from Arma 3, surely you noticed the enclosed turret? Why did you choose to go with just a pintle mount?

After all the stories I've heard about Humvee crew getting sliced to pieces by shrapnel and everything else above the waist, I don't know why - in any vehicle - the gunner needs to stand with half his body outside manning an MG.

I assume the computer controlled turret is what makes up most of the cost of the Fennek, nearly a million dollars per unit. Gotta cut them costs!

And manning a pintle gives you much more situational awareness. Peripheral vision, depth perception and shit like that is pretty important.

All those fancy computers and electronics just increase weight that could be increased by more armour instead. Shop Fordorsian, shop cool.

No fancy gizmos here. Only good old fashion excuses to lay waste to a large area somewhere in that general direction. I mean you didn't actually identify the individuals, but you were certain there was an entire squad in that hut.

And thus Fordy armoured units were forced to signal their HQ via semaphore or runner.

When the combination of Atomic War and EW Overload happens, so are we all.

Or at least, use field telephones, when they aren't zapped by atomic explosions.

Fun, legit, story.

I once spoke with an infantry captain (Canadian) who on maneuvers with the British Army as OPFOR used his GPMGs to communicate with his battalion command via morse code.

Apparently the British had compromised his communications, so he had to improvise. Machine gun bursts in morse code in french, and he got away with it for the remainder of the exercise.
